An ancient pre-Columbian Nayarit terracotta figure of a seated shaman. Dating to the Proto-Classic period, 100 BC– 250 AD. The male figure is shown seated. Coloured with a deep ochre pigment and wearing only a belt, painted necklace and elaborate headdress. Supported on legs contorted into a seemingly impossible position, the broad, square torso imbues this individual with a domineering physical presence. The small hands are gripped tightly into fists, as if the figure were flexing his muscles whilst shouting. The head is marked by discordant almond eyes, a prominent nose, deep, round mouth and small lips. The ears and nose are pierced with multiple rings. The staring eyes and open mouth of this figure are disturbing yet gripping; appealing in the strangest of ways. This one has deep-set punctate eyes, prominent nose, non-descript mouth and thick brow above the eyes. The lack of ornamentation, earspools, headdress, necklace, etc. and the heavy, thick brow indicate this is a monkey personification. It may have represented a deceased family pet. It was broken from a larger solid figure thousands of years ago. These clay human and animal figures were broken apart and thrown into fields in a ritual that was supposed to ensure crop fertility. The naked figure stares out into the distance through the hollow slits of her eyes, the mouth held open. She clutches her sides in the pose typical of Nayarit female figures, the gaunt features of the face contrasting with the broad body and exaggerated breasts. Her hair tied up into an elaborate coiffure, she wears three spools in each ear and a thick collar around the neck. This is not only an enchanting piece of pre-Columbian art. It tells the story of Nayarit ritual practices and traditional beliefs.
