The area known archaeologically as West Mexico has long been recognized as a region of beautiful ceramic sculptures. Manifestations of a reverence for ancestors and a belief in the power of symbolism. These traits are recognized as characteristic of the cultural development of the region during the period from 300 B.C. to 400 A.D. the time of the Colima culture. Colima is best known for its finely finished red burnished effigies, both of humans and animals, especially dogs, and the solid small unburnished figurines, commonly called Colima flats. It measures 2 inches in width by 0.5 inches in depth by 6 inches in height(5.08 cm by 1.27 cm by 15.2 cm) The figure shows wear consistent with a Pre-Columbian dating, with a hairline cracks on both legs from previous repair work, but generally is in very good condition. It also comes with a specially designed, hand-made iron museum display stand for display. Guaranteed authentic, it would make a superb addition to any collection of Pre-Columbian ceramics. This beautifully modeled, solid archaic standing female figure is depicted wearing a headband, earrings and a necklace with multiple pendants. The famous mural artist Diego Rivera began his collection of Mexican pottery with small Colima figures- the collection later grew into a national treasure which was eventually housed in the Rivera Museum in Mexico City. Ancient Pre Columbian Proto Classic Nayarit Seated Shaman Figure - 100 BC
An ancient pre-Columbian Nayarit terracotta figure of a seated shaman. Dating to the Proto-Classic period, 100 BC– 250 AD. The male figure is shown seated. Coloured with a deep ochre pigment and wearing only a belt, painted necklace and elaborate headdress. Ancient Pre Columbian Nayarit Painted Pottery Warrior Figure - 100 BC
An ancient pre-Columbian Nayarit figure of a warrior. Dating to the proto-Classic period, 100 BC- 250 AD. A long serpent-like face. Grinning through the fleshy lips, with a set of prominent teeth and the eyes set impossibly wide on the head– there is something discordant, even monstrous about this figure. Each component seems at odds with the other; be it the gaunt expression with the broad muscular torso or the thick-set legs with the emaciated arms. Yet to dismiss the art of the Nayarit as unaccomplished is to miss its purpose; these figures were never meant to be beautiful, they were meant to convey a sense of power. Standing on claw-like feet, brandishing a short knife and decorated with a deep ochre pigment, this warrior has an undeniable energy, an energy that seems to bleed from the clay itself. Ancient Pre-Columbian Nayarit Pottery Seated Female Fertility Figure - 100 BC
A high quality. Particularly vibrant ancient west Mexican Nayarit figure, dating to the proto-Classic period, around 100 BC- 100 AD. Sitting upon a two legged stool. The naked figure stares out into the distance through the hollow slits of her eyes, the mouth held open. She clutches her sides in the pose typical of Nayarit female figures, the gaunt features of the face contrasting with the broad body and exaggerated breasts. Her hair tied up into an elaborate coiffure, she wears three spools in each ear and a thick collar around the neck. This is not only an enchanting piece of pre-Columbian art. It tells the story of Nayarit ritual practices and traditional beliefs. We can see the notion of the earth as the great creator and sustainer of humanity, the fertility of the soil touched by the stool is conflated with the fertility of the woman ... moreseated upon it. This idea of shared fertility between the earth and female members of society is still held in some traditional South/Central American societies, where women alone appear in the fields to carry out the first planting of the season. For further reading on the subject. Please see: Townsend. R.F. ed. 1998. Ancient West Mexico: Art and Archaeology of the Unknown Past. Chicago: Art Institute of Chicago. Height: 16 5/8 inches. Condition: Excellent. With encrustations, intact and unrestored. Provenance: Formerly in the US collection of Harry and Elinor Lynn. Acquired from the Hokin Gallery, Palm Beach, Florida on the 9th January, 1975(the original invoice from this sale will be included to the new purchaser upon request) Mr Harry Lynn(1916– 2006) was perhaps best known as the owner of the Washington Coliseum when the Beatles performed their first U.S. concert there on the 11th of February 1964. Lynn was born in Kansas City but spent most of his childhood in Omaha. During World War II he joined the Army and was stationed in France and England. Moving to Washington D.C. in 1948.
