Jamacoaque ... morefrom a private collection dating 350 B C- 1200 A D. This is not a reprodution. The front has a human head on what sems to be the front of a jaguar with paw feet. It tapers to a rounded point and has a handle. The face has excellent detail with deep set eyes with brow ridges, earrings, very prominent nose ring and an open mouth with pointed teeth. The teeth give it a rather frightening appearance no doubt intentional. The nose is not damaged but obscured by the thick nose ring that hangs down onto the top lip. The head with a headdress and side lappets. There is a hole at the back end and one in back of the head. The body is clear but I believe there is still debris in the head as IT WILL NOT TWEET. I did not want to try to dislodge debris and damage the holes. It measures 4 1/2 inches long and approx 4 1/4 inches high and rests on two paw feet. Clay color is a buff color not quite as dark as in the photos. I am saying Jamacoaque but it was in with Jamacoaque and also La Tolita fragments and I am not an expert. It is in very good condition with some chips to the side lappets that are not evident from the front but I have the damage pictured. I see evidence of an old repair or restoration on the front legs as there is a thin line that extends over to the back(see photos) However. I do not see evidence of a clean break all around and I do not see any type of glue in the lines. The clay color is very consisent and the restoration or repair was done a long time ago in Ecuador and not by the private collector who brought them back years ago. There seems to be no evidence of trying to hide the breaks unless they were cracks and the piece was not broken or separated. Other pieces in the collection had repairs and evidence of glue and some of these are in my other listings. I have close up photos of the lines or breaks that i have darkened a bit in the photos to show

They are best known for their distinctive monochromatic pottery and fine metal work. The face mask shows a parrot. In Copan Honduras was the parrot the sign of the ball game, the holy game of the Maya world. It is quite possible that this represented the protector and decision of life and death at the ball game and the whistle is part of the ritual. As in Copan several of these pipes have been found. May also mean that the holy leaders and driving instructions given to players with the pipes. The ceramic is nice and especial work up. A very uncommon and neat looking pre-Spanish contact(pre-Columbian) Moche culture ceramic stylized Female-shaped whistle wearing a bold head dress or hat. From coastal Peru, dating from about 100 to 800 AD, more or less. T he condition is mostly good. Showing great age and wear overall, about 55 mm(over 2 inches) in length, about 13 mm tall when viewed from the side and 26 mm(about one inch) at the widest part. The left part of the hat has a fracture that appears to have been repaired The Moche culture was very creative in various art forms, especial figural and sculpture works. Symbolism was a very important part of their culture. this is a very unusual whistle and still very collectible despite the repair. It has a hat with two horns of the Shaman and between is a hole that makes a delightful whistle. Pristine trichrome colors and very little destruction of glaze or paint. It appears to have some mineral deposits on feet and a few places. No cracks or chipping that I see. It has earrings. A nose ring, likely in person it was Gold, and a breast plate. Hi. I have a great Mayan figure whistle for auction. This is a Mayan Dignitary wearing a jaguar hat. He has large ear spools and a neck wrap. He is a portly fellow. I purchased this from Arte Primitivo, the Howard Rose Gallery. There is a picture included of the piece in the auction catalog. It was the July 17, 2006 Catalog Page 12#30. They cam from the Imre and Nicholas T. Molnar collection that they accumulated from 1960-1978. This is a very unique artifact. I haven't seen one quite like this. The whistle is broken. This came from the estate of Fred Lee. He was a coin dealer in Quincy Illinois for a large number of years and owned and operated Gem City Coin on Main Street. He had a private collection of artifacts, Asian and mask from all over the world. I do not know the origin of this item or its age. It could be from the 1900s it could be hundreds of years old I really don't know. There are gold flecks in the pottery. There is a chip in the beak/mouth area. This is a very nice early Pre Columbian artifact animal vessel or whistle made of pottery. There is a hole in center top. Three of the ears are chipped off. Done long ago. I recently purchased this piece and a few others from a New Orleans collectors estate. It is authentic. It measures 3 7/8" x 3 1/8" wide x 2 1/4" high.
