This ancient antiquity is a Chupícuaro head fragment from a Chupícuaro fertility effigy. I bought this in San Miguel. Mexico( located in the ... morefar eastern part of the state of Guanajuato) at an estate sale in the early 1970s when I was living there during the summer. The effigy fragment still has remnants of red paint. The nose and mouth. And left side are broken off. It measures 1 ½ x 1 ¼ x ½ inch depth. Stand not included. There is also glue residue on the back as the fragment as it was once attached to a velvet backed display case. Chupícuaro(a pre-Horizon culture) fertility effigies were placed into the dirt by a Chupícuaro farmer during the planting season to appease the goods to insure a bountiful harvest. Subsequently. After centuries of being plowed or tilled over, the heads usually break off from the bodies. Chupícuaro Excerpt from Wikipedia. The free encyclopedia The Chupícuaro culture was located in the mountains of central Mexico and is named for the area in which the artifacts have been found. It is an important pre-Hispanic archeological site from the late pre-classical or formative period; located west of the Mexican Plateau. On the hills nearby the Lerma River and its tributary Coroneo or Tiger River; which currently under water because of the Solis dam. Just 7 kilometers from Acamaro in the Guanajuato State, near the Michoacán State border in Mexico Little is known about the history of this site. And it was not until 1946, due to a dam construction, that the first explorations were performed, discovering pottery objects and tombs. The place is currently below dam water, although there are surrounding areas still being explored. According to several sources. It is believed that this settlement developed between 500 BC and 300 AD, although some scientists suggest an older development, as far back as 800 BC. Establishing a firm chronology for Chupícuaro has been very problematic. Due to a lack of stratigraphic excavations and reliable C 14 dates.

Pretty lady figurines were quite common throughout Mexico, particularly among the Chupicuaro, Michoacan, and Tlatilco societies. The exact purpose of ... morethese figures is still up for debate with the most common interpretation that they are fertility idols buried in homes and fields. They have also been argued that the figures may have been protective items that were ritually broken as young women matured through different life phases. Pre-Columbian - Chupicuaro brownware
This elegant Chupicuaro burnished earthenware or brownware pottery bowl has an oval shape with lugs at each long end. Possibly serving as handles. The convex bottom rises to a deep waist with a very pleasant incised design of impressionistic mountains encircling the extended middle, and is topped by a wide, flared rim. The bottom and one side are darkened, either through the pit firing process or by use over a fire. The Chupicuaro started pottery production with their fine brownware and this is an excellent example of their mastery of that art form. Chupícuaro ceramics were all formed by hand without the use of a potting wheel. Estimated age of 500 BCE- 300 CE. Dimensions: 6” x 6” at the widest points, 5 ½” x 4 ½” at the opening. 2 ½” high in the middle, 3” high at the lug ends. Condition: The condition of this bowl is ... moregood with four chips in the rim, one rather noticeable chip and one very minor chip on the extended middle. There are also root marks and some mineral deposition, which are normal and indicative of its age. Please note that despite appearances the end lugs are in original condition and undamaged. Provenance- This item was recently purchased from the estate of the late Willis Pratt, a career academic at the University of Texas in Austin. Dr. Pratt owned a residence in Guanajuato and frequently visited Central Mexico between the mid 1930’s and mid 1960’s. During this period he amassed a fine collection of many pre-Columbian artifacts which he kept and displayed in his home in Austin. Guaranteed authentic.

FERTILITY HEAD/FEMALE FIGURE, CHUPICUARO PRE-COLUMBIAN, WESTERN MEXICO
FERTILITY HEAD/FEMALE FIGURE. CHUPICUARO PRE-COLUMBIAN. WESTERN MEXICO Length: 2 1/2" Width: 1 3/4" Thick: 1/2" Weight: 8 oz This Pre-Columbian Female Fertility Effigy comes from the Mexican state of Jalisco. It was part of a major 19th century collection assembled by an American banker. The ancient Chupicuaro devoted their time and skills to creating pottery figurines. And other small artifacts. Characteristically flat. Chupícuaro human figurines can also be realistically three dimensional or shaped into vessels. They are distinguished by their slanted, coffee-bean shaped eyes. The figurines are typically depicted as female, indicated by a part in the center of the hair or headdress, and can be fashioned with intricately molded clay clothing and jewelry. Most figurines were left unpainted, but occasionally some were decorated ... morewith bright colors. Hundreds of years later, the remnants of red paint can still be seen on some of their faces and jewelry. This artifact was used to promote fertility among the ancients. Typically it was nightly placed atop the female womb with the requisite prayers and rituals. While broken from a larger piece. This artifact maintains the paint integrity and the remarkable detail of the Chupicuaro culture. On Aug-06-13 at 21:26:33 PDT. Seller added the following information: Posted with

RARE Pre-Columbian CHUPICUARO FACE BOWL, circa 300 B.C.
RARE Pre-Columbian CHUPICUARO FACE BOWL. Circa 300 B.C. Click to View Image Album This is a superb Pre-Columbian CHUPICUARO FACE BOWL. Circa 300 B.C. 250 A.D. The ceramic style is named after the village of Chupícuaro in the western Mexican state of Guanajuato where it was found. Situated on the Lerma River the culture was active from about 300 BC to AD 250. During the same time Teotihuacán flourished. Luckily excavations of the site were conducted in 1946-7 revealing much of what we know today. In 1949 the Solís Dam was constructed. This led to the flooding of the area which today remains under a lake formed by this act. Chupícuaro ceramics were formed without the use of a potting wheel. The mastery of this hand-building skill is seen in the symmetry and form of the vessel. Many whole examples of this style of pottery ... moreremain intact due to the thickness of the vessel walls. This bowl is hand painted with the colors that were taken from natural elements and exhibits a stylized human face on one side. The textile-like geometric designs are typical of Chupícuaro pottery and are also found painted onto human figurines that were also abundantly made. The significance of the designs is unknown. This rare face bowl measures 4” high. 10 ½” wide and is in good condition aside from two 1” stress cracks at the upper edge and some natural abrasion and wear due to age and use. PROVENANCE: This item comes directly from the estate of a Beverly Hills Pre-Columbian art collector and was legally imported into the United States over 50 years ago. Authenticity is GUARANTEED. Precolumbian sculpture #25, Picasso / Chupicuaro, ancient Mexican sculpture art
Precolumbian head from Teotihuacán. Mexico(1) Precolumbian. Sculpted, ceramic head; most likely 100 B.C. 300 A.D. It appears to be in the Chupicuaro style which reminds people of Picasso. 2) Dimensions. approximately 1 inch by 1" by half an inch" 3) Medium. clay. Hard fired under great heat. 4) Provenance. I found this head(and other heads) in a farmer's field near the center of the ruins of Teotihuacán. Near Mexico City, in 1966 or 1967, when I was an anthropology student at the Universidad de las Americas in Mexico City. Generally, these farmers' fields were rocky and dusty but rain would wash the dust off the rocks and reveal that some of them had faces- and were terracotta heads and not rocks. Many times, after a rain, I would take a bus from Mexico City to Teotihuacán, explore the farmers' fields, ... moreand look for those features that were not visible when covered with dust. In this way, I acquired dozens of precolumbian heads. How to distinguish an authentic precolumbian sculpture from a fake: 1) provinance; know the source; 2) study precolumbian anthropology; see what's in the museums and the books; 3) lick. Or otherwise wet, the object and see how long it takes to dry; ancient ceramics take a long time to dry because they are more porous than new ceramics. Views of this primitive/ modern art old head show front and back.

This is a striking piece of brown ware pottery from Chupicraro culture. Western Mexico. It is possibly from Colima or Nayarit cultures of Mexico. It is intact and good condition. Rounded bottom and flared rim. Rim has four decorative small carvings. There are good manganese deposits and root marks and a good earthy smell when inside is wetted. There are charming smoke clouds from the uneven glazing and shadings blending from black. Brown, tan and gray colors. I bought this from a collector that was not sure of the exact culture but it is authentically pre Columbian work with nice rounded lines. CA 500BC- 200 AD Diameter 8 inches. Ht. 5 inches, and Rim across 4inches. A nice well done relic and good for collectors especially good for lower budgets, or starters. See my other pre Columbian listings Inca Treasures LTD
PreColumbian MEXICO Mayan 400 BCE -100 BCE preHorizon CHUPICUARO head EFFIGY
Offered for Auction An Ancient Antiquity- a Chupícuaro head fragment from a Chupícuaro fertility effigy Chupícuaro(a pre-Horizon culture) fertility effigies were placed into the dirt by a Chupícuaro farmer during the planting season to appease the goods to insure a bountiful harvest. Subsequently. After centuries of being plowed or tilled over, the heads usually break off from the bodies The Chupícuaro culture was located in the mountains of central Mexico and is named for the area in which the artifacts have been found. It is an important pre-Hispanic archeological site from the late pre-classical or formative period; located west of the Mexican Plateau. On the hills nearby the Lerma River and its tributary Coroneo or Tiger River; which currently under water because of the Solis dam. Just 7 kilometers from Acamaro ... morein the Guanajuato State, near the Michoacán State border in Mexico Little is known about the history of this site. And it was not until 1946, due to a dam construction, that the first explorations were performed, discovering pottery objects and tombs. The place is currently below dam water, although there are surrounding areas still being explored. According to several sources. It is believed that this settlement developed between 500 BC and 300 AD, although some scientists suggest an older development, as far back as 800 BC I have Aztec Friends who live deep in the forests of Mexico in the traditional style and speak very little Spanish. But mainly the Aztec Dialect- Nahuatl They presented me with several artifacts they have uncovered throughout the years while farming. Terracotta Chupicuaro "Pretty Lady" Figure
Chupicuaro Culture. Pretty lady figurines were quite common throughout Mexico. Particularly among the Chupicuaro, Michoacan, and Tlattlco, societies. The exact purpose of these figures is still up for debate with the most common interpretation being that they are fertility idols buried in homes and fields. They have also been argued that the figures may have been protective items that were ritually broken as young women matured through different life phases. One of the most endearing types of the clay objects is the small female figures. Or"pretty ladies" They typically show a naked female with short arms, extended stomach and a fancy coiffure or headdress. Chupicuaro was the elaborate burial ground of a village above the Lerma River in the state of Guanajuato. The abundant offerings of pottery.
