Peru. ... moreThe Chimú culture arose around 900 A.D. on the northern coast of Peru in a large adobe city in the Moche Valley. And was conquered by the Incas in 1470 AD. They are best known for their distinctive monochromatic pottery and fine metal work. The main types of Chimú ceramics are small sculptures, manufactured molded and shaped pottery for daily use and those made for ceremonial use for offerings at burials. The pottery is often in the shape of a creature. Or has a human figure sitting or standing on a cuboid bottle. The shiny black finish of most Chimú pottery was achieved by firing the pottery at high temperatures in a closed kiln, which prevented oxygen from reacting with the clay. This beautiful molded stirrup vessel measures 5 inches in width by 4 inches in depth by 7 inches in height(12.7 cm by 10.1 by 17.7 cm) The figure shows wear consistent with use and a Pre-Columbian dating. It has large ear spool stretchers and a concave curved back, the surfaces have buffish shades of encrusting from burial. Pair of Pre-Columbian Colima Black & Red Vessels, Ancient West Mexico
An attractive pair of vessels from Pre-Columbian West Mexico. Circa 200 B.C. 300 A.D. likely attributed to the ancient Colima culture of West Mexico. The largest piece measures about 5" tall, while the smaller of the two measures about 3 1/2" tall. One vessel is finished in black, while the other is black. The form of the body of each vessel features a squared bottom lobe, topped by a rounded neck on the larger jar, with each having a flared rim. These display nicely as a pair. Condition: Intact and in original as-found condition. With minor chipping, abrasions weathering and wear. Otherwise, rootmarks, sediment and mineral deposits indicative of an ancient piece. Provenance: Former Lynn Langdon collection. Personally collected by Langdon in West Mexico between the 1940's- 1960's.

And by trading textiles and goods with the interior tribes. Textiles(woven fabrics) were a huge part of their culture. The finest textiles were status symbols for the elite. And they fetched high value trade goods. Spindle whorls were a vital part of ancient life. As they were necessary tools in the production of clothing and fine textiles for trade. They acted as a weight which steadied the spindle that made thread from Alpaca wool. Cotton, and Vicuna wool, a type of small camel. This piece was acquired at Coxen Hole of the Roatan Islands in Hondurace from an amature archeologist/collector who found it on the island. I met him while on vacation and struck up a conversation about antiques and from there. Was invited to his humble home to view his collection which he personally found on the island over a period of about 50 years, since he was a kid playing in the jungles. I had the opportunity to purchase a small part of this collection which I will be listing here on Ebay. This auction is for a carved jade bead. There is a small square of black along with about 1/4 of the whole bead being a fantastic deep blood red color. It measures 32mm by about 20mm and weighs 13.1 grams. It is in untouched.
