Pre Columbian cultures often used music with strings. Flutes, rattles, and rattle vessels in rituals and ceremonies and the Mayans too. I am not sure if the rattles might also be placed in tombs to scare away bad spirits. They would be shaken for sound. There are lots of Pre Columbian pottery flutes around but not many of these rattles. Some minor surface scratching on pottery with some white spots. Purchased from Artemis Gallery. Rare Chancay artifact of a woman on death rattle ceremonial piece. From central Costa Rican culture and used in death rituals. It rattles when shaken. Good paint and comes with its own stand. It is rather rough hewn texture I believe when created but it adds to the piece. Many Chancay pieces have gray beige tone with black painted designs and this is no different. Striking beautiful Tagua nut natural seed beads dyed and sculpted into wonderful shapes as the locals have done for hundreds of years. They are made by the native population and sold at markets. We know this bead as pine ivory and it will be made and colored with a rainbow of dyes. Tagua is a large fruit with a big nut or seed which can be made for local ornaments. Great pre Columbian seated couple in two figures. This is a wonderful pair seated together with stoic poses. Jalisco couples are rare to fid and great collectors items. I am not sure what could have happened to the man's right shoulder. This is a wonderful full size olla vessel that is broad and has double handles. It is Mayan with vibrant rich colors and designs well preserved. There are multiple rows of pictures and geometric patterns but I cannot say I understand them. The vessel broadens to a center ridge and angles in to the rim with different patterns in each area. This is a wonderful set of nineteen Pre Columbian pottery stone artifact beads strung together. Seventeen are on the tie and 2 smaller whorl beads are free from another collection giving 19 beads. They are from Western Mexico but the two conical shaped are likely Peru beads. They have great patterns. Color and deep decorations on them. Great pieces for making more ornate necklaces or just to enjoy. Spindle or whorl beads were used on spindle sticks to enhance the spinning speed of making yarn out of the alpaca wool. They may have been used decoratively for other purposes. Stones like these are still often used in the Andean mountain villages or small Mexican villages where the Indigenous people still make their own yarns. I have seen them doing this in Cotacachi. Sale item. Reducing my collection. This is a nice Pre Columbian Mayan olla vessel with really interesting surface patina. Nice for the beginning collector with lower budget but with lots of interesting features. It has manganese deposits from burial. The uneven fading patterns of paint and glaze leaves traces of paint showing even with some red coloring. On the bottom it has some lines still penetrating through of the original design work and from side it appears there are columns of color left over. I like this piece mostly because of its patina and old look and still in good shape though much paint has faded. A good conversation piece and priced for the lower budget. Culture: Mayan. This is a rare and very unusual figural effigy of a Pre Columbian terracotta. Pottery dying deity figure lying on a bed with a blanket. It has also been described as a sleeping deity. In any event it is a real eye grabber. Figure much more realism based than a lot of Pre Columbian art complete with open mouth and teeth. Figure lying supine with legs up and either dying or sleeping. Head has holes through it but I don't know the meaning of this. He is not demanding and will not ask much attention. This is a very nice piece of Pre Columbian art that has been reproduced by a local Mexican artist hand made with wonderful etchings and carvings of iconic and deity or God Icons to look very authentic. A great piece for show and for those attracted to Pre Columbian art. This may be vintage aged but I am not sure. It is a large item. 9 inches tall and 61/2 inches diameter. Solid and durable.
