Publisher: Wrens Park Publishing; 1999) Although there have been many books written about medieval women. Few have focused specifically on the lady. In a book designed as a companion to the author's previous book. The Knight in Medieval England. Professor Coss attempts to remedy this with a work which concentrates on the role of the lady within medieval society, how she was perceived both by herself and by her male counterparts, how she related to and participated within the seemingly prevailing male culture of gentility, how the lives of lords and ladies inter-related, and how they behaved towards one another. The author begins by introducing the issues to be discussed through the example of the Pastons of the fifteenth century. The origins of the English lady are then considered and her position. Status and image during the eleventh and twelfth centuries examined, highlighting both changes and continuities. The book then develops this theme by looking at the widening gentility in England during the succeeding centuries, especially as expressed through a variety of visual media. Employing a variety of sources. Including double monumental effigies, brasses, and surviving letters, Professor Coss opens to popular scrutiny the affective relations between lord and lady, before turning to antagonistic relationships. Delightful Ancient Pre-Columbian zoomorphic Vessel (1000 - 1500 AD)
Normal 0 false false false EN-US JA X-NONE This amazing zoomorphic vessel of a double-headed jaguar belonged to a personal collection of artifacts discovered in the Atlantic Watershed zone of Costa Rica. In the Nicoya P eninsula. Made by the ancient pre-Columbian civilization of the Chorotega people. Dating from 1000-1500 AD this incredible detailed piece measures10" in width and 9 ½" in height. The condition of the piece is superb with mild weathering of the surface as would be expected of an authentic piece of this age and minimal restoration to one leg(pleae see photo#6) The pictures are very clear and show the vessel as it appears. It was most likely used for drinking or burning ceremonial substances as other artifacts discovered in the same area were utilized. It is a museum quality piece worthy of any collection for a ... morevery fair price. Normal 0 false false false EN-US JA X-NONE These vessels are distinguished by animal shapes. Often four-legged with two heads on opposite sides and a bowl on top. Realistic features and abstract designs are painted in clay slips of several colors on a light background. Pieces like this one with jaguar heads have been found in elaborate graves. They have a function in a ritual involving food or drink or the burning of incense. Likely possessed by a chief. Ceramics found in residential areas, presumably for everyday use, are much simpler and sturdier. The Chorotega was the most powerful American Indian tribe of northwest Costa Rica at the time of the Spanish conquest. The Chorotega were corn farmers. Had markets and a semidemocratic social structure in which chiefs were elected, and carried on frequent warfare with neighbouring peoples. They wore padded cotton armour and fought with bow and arrow and a wooden sword set with small flint knives. Religious festivals featured the South American custom of the ritual drinking bout; however, Mexican traits such as human sacrifice and self-mutilation of the ears, tongue, and genitals were also present. A pantheon of gods

This is an unusually formed tripod bowl from Atlantic watershed. Costa Rica. It dates from 1000-1500 AD. Pre-Columbian human head-shaped bowl in terra-cotta—1000-1500 AD Atlantic Watershed. Costa Rica This expressive human head-shaped bowl has 2 holes behind the ears so that it could be hung around the neck. This is probably why it does not stand on its rounded bottom. Clearly the pierce ears once had some sort of dangling decorations. Dates from 1000-1500 AD. Atlantic Watershed, Costa Rica. In the photos. The piece rests on a jar lid so it won't topple over. Pre-Columbian seated stone sukia figure—1000-1500 AD Costa Rica
This is a grey volcanic stone sukia. Or shaman figure, from the Atlantic Watershed region formerly inhabited by the Guetar(or Huetar) Indians. These figures frequently have one or both hands holding a tubular object up to the mouth. Others, like this one, seem to be contemplating or gazing. In the photos. It may appear that the nose tip is chipped but that is not the case. The nose tip was intentionally formed in 3 nodules and is completely intact. This is an authentic piece and not one of those museum cast copies which seem to show up all too often. A PRE-COLUMBIAN TAIRONA VASE 1000 - 1500 AD - Museum Quality
A Pre Columbian Tairona Pottery Vase 1000- 1500 AD An unusually large blackware vase. The black slip is nicely burnished Beautiful in its pure simplicity. Fine Patina- Museum Quality Condition: Very Good 10 1/2" height The Tairona ceramic chronologies range from 200 BCE to 1650 CE. And the Caribbean coast of Colombia has evidence of ceramics from at least 2500 BCE. Recent investigations in Chengue, Parque Tairona by the Colombian archaeologist Alejandro Dever show significant variations in the ceramic that allow for a chronological division of sequence into at least five phases. The first phase, called Nahuange 1, appears to start at around 200 BCE and ends at around 500 CE when there appears to be a peak in the population. A second phase spans from 500 CE to about 900 CE; it can be called Nehuange 2, and was called Buritaca after detailed ... moreexcavations by Jack Wynn in the 1970s. From c. 900 CE began what is commonly called the Tairona period, characterized by an impressive increase in the variation, size and number of ceramic forms, many conserving the styles from the Nehuange or Buritaca phases. The Tairona 1 through 3 phases, from 900 to 1650, show significant local variations. This was shown by numerous works done in the 1980s by Colombian archaeologists Augusto Oyuela, Carl Langebaek, Luisa Fernanda Herrera and Ana Maria Groot, and others. During the Tairona period, the evidence for exchange increases as does the population of the entire region. The causes for this population increase are not fully known but what is evident is the robust local exchange networks that emerge at this time. GOOD LUCK AT THE AUCTION! Pre-Inca Pottery Chimu Lamballeque Period 1000-1500 AD Auction
Pre-Inca Pottery Chimu Lamballeque Period 1000-1500 AD Auction I am selling a portion of my family collection that has been in our family for well over 45 years. Due to downsizing and not having the storage room any longer I would rather others enjoy these unique pieces of old pottery. They have been stored in glass display cases for most of their time while in my care. They all come from a non smoking environment and great care will be taken in their packing. Double boxed for extra cushioning and excess bubble wrap. These were all aquired by my family while travelling and living in Peru and Bolivia. All the items were aquired from various sources and were verified by a local museum curator at the time. None have documents and providing carbon dating documentation even the most elaborate museums cannot afford. Knowing where the items were ... morefound is key and all in my collection were aquired in archeological ventures. This piece is an interesting art piece from the Lamballeque/ Chimu era. The condition is as seen in photo(see photos) the piece was restored by a curator in Lima in the 60's and has not been changed since. ~ 25cm long. 12cm wide and 18cm high. The piece is slightly darker than shown in photos* The Lambayeque period dates to approximately 1000 AD. Extending to the rise of the Chimú Empire in 1350 AD. The Chimú were the residents of Chimor, with its capital at the city of Chan Chan, a large adobe city in the Moche Valley of present-day Trujillo city. The culture arose about 900 AD. The Inca ruler Tupac Inca Yupanqui led a campaign which conquered the Chimú around 1470 AD, This was just fifty years before the arrival of the Spanish in the region. Consequently, Spanish chroniclers were able to record accounts of Chimú culture from individuals who had lived before the Inca conquest. Similarly, Archaeological evidence suggest Chimor grew out of the remnants of Moche culture; early Chimú pottery had some resemblance to that of the Moche. Their ceramics are all black, and their wor

The stone itself is particularly fine, of a light gray with black flecks. The central point of the triangular form is unusually tall in relation to the rest of the piece. Although there have been many hypotheses as to the meaning of this shape, it clearly has some association with power and/or fertility. Columbus himself gives an eye-witness account to this affect. Equally the majority of caciques(chiefs) have three stones to which they and their people have great devotion. One they say is for the fertility of the grain and vegetables that they grow; the next for mothers to give birth without pain, and the third for the water and sun when they have need. Although quite a large number of three-pointers have survived owing to the durability of the material, it is hard to find examples of such quality and expression. Note The Taino people were polytheistic and also had a long tradition of ancestor worship. Three-pointer stones such as this one belong to a
