A large Pre-Columbian Jalisco horned shaman hollow figure vessel from ancient West Mexico. Circa 200 B.C. 300 A.D. This example measures approximately ... more10" tall by about 5 1/2" wide and depicts a seated figure with a prominent horn-like protrusion from his forehead. Such horn-like depictions on figures are believed by scholars to symbolically represent the individual as a shaman. The individual has a false beard-like protrusion from his chin, and is holding an object near his mouth, perhaps a flute-like instrument, pipe or ceremonial object. The object is very heavy due to original sediment from burial remaining inside. Condition: Body is intact. Multiple repairs at the head(but the face area is mostly untouched) with fill/restoration over the break lines around the top. Sides and back of the head, as visible in the photos. Surface erosion, pigment loss, chipping, abrasions, weathering and wear overall. Heavy sediment deposits remain inside from burial, with traces of root marks and mineral deposits on the surface as evidence of age and authenticity. Provenance: Former Lynn Langdon collection. Collected personally by Langdon between the 1940's to 1960's.

Grand androgenous figure, likely a shaman, ruler or elite person given his/her large earspools, nosering, and magnificent, checkerboard patterned headband. The figure, nude aside for signs of body paint, is a quintessential example of the Jalisco style with its characteristically elongated head and striking red finish. Seated with one leg crossed under the other and a drum propped against both legs, the ruler/shaman is playing his percussive instrument, perhaps even chanting or singing given his open mouth. 9 1/2"T x 6"W x 5 1/4"D Normal surface wear. Ancient Pre Columbian Proto Classic Nayarit Seated Shaman Figure - 100 BC
An ancient pre-Columbian Nayarit terracotta figure of a seated shaman. Dating to the Proto-Classic period, 100 BC– 250 AD. The male figure is shown seated. Coloured with a deep ochre pigment and wearing only a belt, painted necklace and elaborate headdress. Supported on legs contorted into a seemingly impossible position, the broad, square torso imbues this individual with a domineering physical presence. The small hands are gripped tightly into fists, as if the figure were flexing his muscles whilst shouting. The head is marked by discordant almond eyes, a prominent nose, deep, round mouth and small lips. The ears and nose are pierced with multiple rings. The staring eyes and open mouth of this figure are disturbing yet gripping; appealing in the strangest of ways. He appears in a trance-like state, speaking to a very ancient place inside ... moreour psyche. Nayarit figures form part of the mysterious shaft tomb culture of ancient western Mexico. Little is known about ancient Nayarit life beyond these enigmatic figures and the other artefacts they produced. The discordant facial expressions of figures such as this have in some quarters been advanced as evidence of shamanism. Haunting and intense. Their true identity remains lost in the distant, unknown past. Height: 13 inches. Condition: Very good. Some minor restoration, including to nose piercing. Beautiful pigment preservation, overall good for an ancient figure of this size. Provenance: From the collection of Mr S. Seeger. Mr Seeger was a well-known art collector with a keen eye and ample financial means. This piece was exhibited. Along with other examples of his Pre-Columbian art, at Princeton University in 1961. The following quote is from the exhibition catalogue, scans of which can be provided to the new owner upon request: Especially choice. Also, in the collection is a remarkable group of Pre Columbian sculptures purchased by Mr Seeger from the distinguished collection of the late Keith Warner. Kelleher et al. The S.J. Colima dogs were patterned after a hairless variety of ancient dog known as the Techichi. Some scholars have speculated that the Colima believed dogs were emissaries of Xolotl. The god of the dead. As such, dogs were envisioned as a guide to lead the spirits of the dead to their resting place in the underworld and such representational objects might have been interred with the deceased. Despite their possible connection with the dead, the representations of these dogs often take on a playful and charming demeanor. Other scholars have noted that this variety of dog w

A Fine Pre-Columbian Colima Blackware Seated Figure Holding a Large Vessel.
A Fine Pre-Columbian Colima Blackware Seated Figure Holding a Large Double-lobed Vessel. Late Preclassic, ca. 300 B.C. to 100 B.C. This unique solid blackware ceramic seated figure holding a large hollow double-lobed pot. Has black burnished slip with brownish mottled torso and beautiful glossy patina overall, dates to the Late Preclassic Period of the West Mexican Colima sculptural tradition and the Tuxcacuesco-Ortices sub-style, ca. 300 B.C. to 100 B.C. This seated figure's bulbous eyes are set below a criss-cross headdress, typical of the type, the straps of which are appliqued. The features of the face resemble the“dish face” variety of this sub-style. The neck is adorned with a necklace holding two ball-shaped pendants. The forearms display two bracelets each. The vessel rests upon the legs and is held with both hands. The sides ... moreof the pot are incised, resembling a pumpkin vessel. The upper lobe has a slightly flaring rim. The entire pot is hollow. There are few known blackware figures in the Colima culture, and this is an extremely rare example from the Late Preclassic period in West Mexico. Ancient Pre-Columbian Nayarit Pottery Seated Female Fertility Figure - 100 BC
A high quality. Particularly vibrant ancient west Mexican Nayarit figure, dating to the proto-Classic period, around 100 BC- 100 AD. Sitting upon a two legged stool. The naked figure stares out into the distance through the hollow slits of her eyes, the mouth held open. She clutches her sides in the pose typical of Nayarit female figures, the gaunt features of the face contrasting with the broad body and exaggerated breasts. Her hair tied up into an elaborate coiffure, she wears three spools in each ear and a thick collar around the neck. This is not only an enchanting piece of pre-Columbian art. It tells the story of Nayarit ritual practices and traditional beliefs. We can see the notion of the earth as the great creator and sustainer of humanity, the fertility of the soil touched by the stool is conflated with the fertility of the woman ... moreseated upon it. This idea of shared fertility between the earth and female members of society is still held in some traditional South/Central American societies, where women alone appear in the fields to carry out the first planting of the season. For further reading on the subject. Please see: Townsend. R.F. ed. 1998. Ancient West Mexico: Art and Archaeology of the Unknown Past. Chicago: Art Institute of Chicago. Height: 16 5/8 inches. Acquired from the Hokin Gallery, Palm Beach, Florida on the 9th January, 1975(the original invoice from this sale will be included to the new purchaser upon request) Mr Harry Lynn(1916– 2006) was perhaps best known as the owner of the Washington Coliseum when the Beatles performed their first U.S. concert there on the 11th of February 1964. Lynn was born in Kansas City but spent most of his childhood in Omaha. During World War II he joined the Army and was stationed in France and England. Moving to Washington D.C. in 1948. In late 1959 he purchased the building which would make his name. Over the years he
