They are best known for their distinctive monochromatic pottery and fine metal work. The main types of Chimú ceramics are small sculptures, manufactured molded and shaped pottery for daily use and those made for ceremonial use for offerings at burials. The pottery is often in the shape of a creature. Or has a human figure sitting or standing on a cuboid bottle. The shiny black finish of most Chimú pottery was achieved by firing the pottery at high temperatures in a closed kiln, which prevented oxygen from reacting with the clay. A buff colored two handled bowl from the Chancay culture of pre-Columbian Peru. Ca. 1000- 1500 AD. It was bought at the Skinner's Ethnographic Auction on 1/24/09. The vessel has a flattened ovoid shape, brown painted decoration around the upper body. One small chip to the lip( see my photo) Manganese deposits and burial accretion in various locations on the body. 4-3/4" tall, and 6" wide. Shipped with the photo card shown in the photo. Ancient Peru, Moche ovoid pottery jar or bottle 200 to 800 AD antiquities
A Moche/possibly early Chimu ovoid jar with a mold face. Pierced ears and a decorated area of some kind of creature with sharp teeth. Ribbons out of mouth would seem to indicate a religious significance for the pot. It is seven inches tall, six inches across at longest side and four inches deep. Semi rounded bottom. This appears to be intact. It would probably date fairly late in the Moche period, possibly 600 to 800 AD. This is from an old collection. Provenance will be provided to the buyer. Depicting two sitting feline or jaguar figures and three floating heads. Framed under glass, textile sandwiched between the glass and a black cardboard backing(not examined out of frame) Finely woven llama wool and probably part of a tunic front. The frame is old and is painted red with tiny yellow spots to match the jaguars. So it was probably framed in Peru near where it was found. It is believed that the Chancay had a centralized political structure. Forming a small regional state. It is a fat rotund HEAD Vessel attributed to the Moche Civilization during the late classic period. 700AD-850AD. It came from a pre WWII dig and has been off the market until now. The piece shows a head at the top in a very strange expression. Almost like he is in pain. He has a very flat head and piercing eyes his mouth is either smirking or showing stress. His ears pop out the sides of his head. There is a tiny hole in the neck and it looks like a tracheotomy to me, maybe that’s why he ... moreis in pain? In his belly is a wide mouth to fill the vessel with water or blood or whatever this was used for. The front is all red and the reverse seems white, but it could just be the dirt that has adhered to the surface causing the whitish look. The bottom is shaped like a football and it is not meant to stand upright. There are surface stains and some very minor surface spotting.
