ANCIENT PRECOLUMBIAN TEXTILE CHANCAY BURIAL DOLL MUMMY CLOTH FRAGMENT CASE PERU
Las Muñecas Antiguas~ Chancay Peruvian Mummy Dolls ~ Funerary Burial Dolls This is a exceptionally nice PreColumbian CHANCAY funerary textile cloth doll. It was made in Peru in the 1920's-40's out of ancient textiles from pre-Columbian burial cloth. The doll has a brown dress with a gold lace apron. She has long braids and a blue and cream band on her forehead. Her facial features are red and black yarn. This doll has been protected by being encased in a lucite box frame that is ready to either display on a shelf or. If desired, it can be hung on the wall or if preferred it is very easy to remove from the case with two screws. This is a very well made and heavy case. The doll is 9" x 3" The lucite case is 12" x 5" x 3" deep. They are both in excellent condition. The Chancay doll represents a blurring ... moreof the line between the past and the present. Indigenous Peruvian artisans recreate Chancay dolls(named after the Chancay culture that inhabited the central coast of Peru ca. AD 1000- 1476) in the old style using ancient fabrics. It is not unusual for these dolls to combine fabrics that originated at various locations along the coastal Peru- from the North Coast to the South Coast. And that are separated in time by thousands of years. It is not known whether Chancay dolls were made specifically to be placed in tombs as funerary offerings. Or if they represent possessions from life that were buried with their owners. Among pre-Columbian Peruvians. The custom of including articles that were important to the deceased was a common burial tradition. Discovered with many interments are tool kits used by spinners and weavers, fishing kits, weapons, and other objects. The relationship of the deceased and these practical funerary goods is obvious. These accoutrements of daily life, as well as superb weavings, jewelry, and other personal treasures, were believed to have utility in a hereafter. But the relationship of the Chancay doll to the deceased is not as apparent. A first conclusion t

Wood Ear Plugs, Moche, Peru | Pre Columbian
This incredibly well preserved set of Pre-Columbian wood ear plugs on which the geometrically decorated is attributed to the Moche horizon of Peru. C.100-800AD. Not wearable today due to the fragile nature of the wood there are certainly few other such pairs that have survived this well. Many wonder how the earrings remained in place when worn. This was easily achieved by wearing attaching a string to both ends of the jewelry and literally tying together back behind the neck. The front flat flares measure about 2.5" outer diameter. The tubular wearing surface is about just slightly thicker than 1inch(about 1 3/16" and overall length with front flare is about 3 7/8" inch. The pair is from the collection of my Grandfather who recently passed away. He was an Anthropologist and former primitive arts collector who has permitted ... moreus to handle a number of the last items from his important and varied collection. In overall good but delicate condition, and a unique addition to a collection of ancient body adornment or one emphasizing perishable materials, the ear plugs feature a carved center piece.
