Pre-Columbian seated stone sukia figure—1000-1500 AD Costa Rica
This is a grey volcanic stone sukia. Or shaman figure, from the Atlantic Watershed region formerly inhabited by the Guetar(or Huetar) Indians. These figures frequently have one or both hands holding a tubular object up to the mouth. Others, like this one, seem to be contemplating or gazing. In the photos. It may appear that the nose tip is chipped but that is not the case. The nose tip was intentionally formed in 3 nodules and is completely intact. This is an authentic piece and not one of those museum cast copies which seem to show up all too often. You are bidding on an AMPHORA SEATED FAT FIGURE red terracotta pottery piece from the WEST COAST CULTURE Colima Mexico A.D. 300-1250. Found this at an antique store. Under the tag is what I believe to be an accession number inscribed on the base when this was added to their collection. The mounting is museum quality too. The piece measures 7-1/2 inches in height by 4-1/2 inches in girth. I am certain the piece is authentic and if you purchase the piece and can prove it is not authentic I will happily refund the purchase price and return shipping charges if the piece is returned in the same condition as sold. A wonderful and very high quality ancient Nayarit earthenware figure. Dating to approximately 100 B.C. 100 A.D. from Mexico. An enchanting female figure. She sits on a stylized chair. Leaning forwards at the viewer, a suckling infant under her right arm. Each ear decorated with three spools, the nose pierced with ring, the tall mass of incised hair unpainted. A thick collar or choker around her neck. Beautiful and fascinating dendrite formations lie all over the figure. Formed over the millennia and testament to this object's extreme age. Ancient Mexicans left no written records. Thus their material remains are the only existing link to this long gone and intriguing peoples. Such artefacts undoubtedly hold both a fascinating history and an enchanting aesthetic. This piece was once part of the Arthur M Sackler collection. A Rare Pre-Columbian Chinesco Seated Female Figure. Type'D" Lagunillas Style, Nayarit, Protoclassic ca. 100 B.C.A.D. 250, with Finely Painted& Incised Decorations& Adornments. This very finely sculpted hollow ceramic seated figure. With burnished deep red to reddish brown slip against a dark brown buff with fine incising of the hair, adorned with a necklace featuring a medallion and a strip on the backside, a pair of multi-faceted earrings, four armlets, and an incised decorated belt(although nude, womanhood indicated) hands on her hips, all in relief, dates to the Protoclassic Period of the West Mexican Nayarit sculptural tradition and belongs to the Lagunillas Type"D" sub-style(also known as Chinesco Type"D" ca. 100 B.C. to A.D. 250. This seated figure has the heavily-lidded incised eyes of the"coffee ... morebean" style, as well as the un-slipped coiffure contrasting with the burnished overall elegance, the lips slightly parted. The highly stylized legs have remains of black pigment, particularly on the buttocks. This finely sculpted figure is one of an increasingly rare group of the most abstract works of sculpture from ancient West Mexico, which inspired many of the 20th Century Art Masters of both Mexico and Europe. An orange-ware terracotta seated figure of a Mayan woman. Ca. 300 AD. The figure, with the woman kneeling, her hands on her knees, she wears a decorative necklace, and large discs through the sides of her nose. She wears a headband fronting her short striated hair, and has smaller circular holed earspools, with a vent hole in the rear of the head. 4-1/2" 11.4cm) tall, 2-1/2" 7cm) wide, and 2-3/8" 6.1cm) front to back, mounted and labeled on a polished hardwood plinth, the overall height is 7-1/4" 18.4cm) I will furnish a color photocopy(laminated in clear plastic) of a similar figure for complete. Ancient Pre Columbian Proto Classic Nayarit Seated Shaman Figure - 100 BC
An ancient pre-Columbian Nayarit terracotta figure of a seated shaman. Dating to the Proto-Classic period, 100 BC– 250 AD. The male figure is shown seated. Coloured with a deep ochre pigment and wearing only a belt, painted necklace and elaborate headdress. Supported on legs contorted into a seemingly impossible position, the broad, square torso imbues this individual with a domineering physical presence. The small hands are gripped tightly into fists, as if the figure were flexing his muscles whilst shouting. The head is marked by discordant almond eyes, a prominent nose, deep, round mouth and small lips. The ears and nose are pierced with multiple rings. The staring eyes and open mouth of this figure are disturbing yet gripping; appealing in the strangest of ways. He appears in a trance-like state, speaking to a very ancient place inside ... moreour psyche. Nayarit figures form part of the mysterious shaft tomb culture of ancient western Mexico. Little is known about ancient Nayarit life beyond these enigmatic figures and the other artefacts they produced. The discordant facial expressions of figures such as this have in some quarters been advanced as evidence of shamanism. Haunting and intense. Their true identity remains lost in the distant, unknown past. Height: 13 inches. Condition: Very good. Some minor restoration, including to nose piercing. Beautiful pigment preservation, overall good for an ancient figure of this size. Provenance: From the collection of Mr S. Seeger. The figures retains remnants of its original black paint. The piece was acquired as a midwesten museum deacquisition to"benefit future purposes" Overall. The figure is in excellent condition, the only concern I could find are(1) a small scratch to one side; and(2) there may be a small flake lost on of of the ears(see last 2 photos) This is about as nice as you will find for such a piece. Your figure. Appears to be, is from the"shaft and chamber tomb" culture of West Mexico(Nayarit, Jalisco and Colima) which dates to roughly 300BC-AD300. This interesting fellow squats with arms curving and meeting at the waist, the legs slightly bent before him as he is supported on a short rounded leg beneath the buttocks, probably indicative of a short stool. The wonderful face is decorated with a faded black painted section on the right side, and he wears a large curving mushroom shaped cap and ear ornaments. The figure, shows the remains of the original flesh colored paint, has striations at the top of the head to denote hair, wears a large nose ring and earrings, minimal facial features as is common with these figures. A Fine Pre-Columbian Colima Blackware Seated Figure Holding a Large Double-lobed Vessel. Late Preclassic, ca. 300 B.C. to 100 B.C. This unique solid blackware ceramic seated figure holding a large hollow double-lobed pot. Has black burnished slip with brownish mottled torso and beautiful glossy patina overall, dates to the Late Preclassic Period of the West Mexican Colima sculptural tradition and the Tuxcacuesco-Ortices sub-style, ca. 300 B.C. to 100 B.C. This seated figure's bulbous eyes are set below a criss-cross headdress, typical of the type, the straps of which are appliqued. The features of the face resemble the“dish face” variety of this sub-style. The neck is adorned with a necklace holding two ball-shaped pendants. The forearms display two bracelets each. The vessel rests upon the legs and is held with both hands. The sides ... moreof the pot are incised, resembling a pumpkin vessel. The upper lobe has a slightly flaring rim. The entire pot is hollow. There are few known blackware figures in the Colima culture, and this is an extremely rare example from the Late Preclassic period in West Mexico. Pre Columbian Carved Stone Seated Figure Idol Effigy Statue Olmec Mayan Mezcala
This listing is for a Pre Columbian carved stone figure. The stone is relatively soft. And a gray color where the original surface is chipped. The statue stands on its feet, though it is in a seated or hunched position. The front surface is darker than the back. The deeper recesses have a white crystalline residue. The figure stands 5.9" tall, and weighs 27 ounces. Its in good condition save for the lighter color chips and scratches. I am fairly unfamiliar with South American artifacts, and rather than attempt to attribute it, I will let you decide what culture it came from.

Ancient Pre-Columbian Nayarit Pottery Seated Female Fertility Figure - 100 BC
A high quality. Particularly vibrant ancient west Mexican Nayarit figure, dating to the proto-Classic period, around 100 BC- 100 AD. Sitting upon a two legged stool. The naked figure stares out into the distance through the hollow slits of her eyes, the mouth held open. She clutches her sides in the pose typical of Nayarit female figures, the gaunt features of the face contrasting with the broad body and exaggerated breasts. Her hair tied up into an elaborate coiffure, she wears three spools in each ear and a thick collar around the neck. This is not only an enchanting piece of pre-Columbian art. It tells the story of Nayarit ritual practices and traditional beliefs. We can see the notion of the earth as the great creator and sustainer of humanity, the fertility of the soil touched by the stool is conflated with the fertility of the woman ... moreseated upon it. His hair is carved in the pottery; his nose and ears are carved as well. His eyes and mouth are polychrome painted black. He is all red with black highlights. One chip in his headdress. He measures almost 14” tall and spans almost 9” at the widest. Has dirt stains and some very minor surface scuffs. This is an extremely old piece and quite interesting and BIG piece.
