Large Clay Mayan Fertility Effigy - Phallic - Meso-American - Penis - Pottery
This large. 14 inch, Meso-American clay effigy, complete with phallic endowment, represents a Mayan Fertility Deity. There have been some glued areas and fragments broken off. Overall, I would consider him to be in very good condition. I photograph and describe the pieces to the best of my limited knowledge. Please study the photos and make your own judgement about cultural origin and age. I have another impressive clay decorator piece listed, so please check that out. Combined shipping, of course. USA shipping only unless approved in advance. Pre Columbian Mayan pottery rattle, ritual, artifact, relic art COA
Really cute rare authentic Pre Columbian Mayan pottery artifact ceremonial or ritual rattle. Stand goes with it. This Mayan piece is nicely proportioned and a cute artistic artifact. Pre Columbian cultures often used music with strings. Flutes, rattles, and rattle vessels in rituals and ceremonies and the Mayans too. I am not sure if the rattles might also be placed in tombs to scare away bad spirits. They would be shaken for sound. There are lots of Pre Columbian pottery flutes around but not many of these rattles. Some minor surface scratching on pottery with some white spots. Purchased from Artemis Gallery. Dealers in ancient and pre Columbian art, and COA available on request. Great piece for conversation and it works. I am sure not meant as baby rattle but more as later maracas for rhythmic music or to ward off spirits in ceremonies ... moreor in burials. Ht. 5 inches. Width is 1 inch. A little guy but unusual and will enhance a collection. Culture Mayan CA 500 AD Provenance Artemis Gallery dealer in antiquities and having an auction coming in March. ANTIQUE PRE COLOMBIAN MAYAN ? POTTERY POISON BOTTLE PAUAHTUN GOD 5 UNLUCKY DAYS
I am not an expert in these sorts of antiquities but. After much research, I believe this to be a Pre Columbian Poison Bottle from the Mayan Culture. The Clay Bottle depicts Pauahtun, God of Five Unlucky Days" also known as"God N" Period is estimated 400- 700 AD. What looks like an Arabic Numeral"8" is, I believe, part of his knotted headdress and more commonly found depicted sideways, not up and down. The headdress has been found, in other representations to resemble a knotted rope, a snake, and other similar shapes as expressed by a particular maker or commensurate with a particular cultural locale, etc. Measures 3 1/2" Tall. 2 3/4" Diameter from Nose to Nose of the faces, 2 3/8" Diameter Side to Side. Condition is Very Good to Excellent. One chip at the rim. One tiny chip at the rim. One fine hairline ... morecrack across the underside of the base. Please see all pictures as they are a very important part of the description of this piece. This will be double-boxed for protection and fully insured(free) From a South Carolina estate sale.
