Commonly called an“axe god” because of the shape. Although all of these jade figures are rare today. This one is especially unusual due to the fact that it has defined legs instead of the more common“axe” bottom, although it still maintains the traditional taper of the standard axe shape when viewed for the side. The positioning of the arms, folded upwards on each side of the chest(as in later Pre-Columbian gold figures) is also less typical than the standard figures which usually place the arms parallel across the chest. Under magnification you can see supple tooling marks throughout the surface. The marks are typical of the time period and not perfectly ... moreparallel as modern tool marks are. The surface has a nice“soft” look. Again typical for an original Mesoamerican piece, unlike the often harsh cuts and sharp edges caused by modern tools and the overall lack of finesse that the original Pre Columbian artist were so skilled at achieving(although much of that look is due to the type of tools used at the time, which would make it difficult to achieve the harsh lines that are common on modern pieces, caved with modern tools) The right foot has what I think is a small chip. Although its edges aren’t rough or sharp so perhaps it’s just an imperfection that was in the stone and not completely carved away when it was made. You can see the“chip” in the last two photos at the bottom of the page. Other than that the piece is in good shape. The hand drilled suspension hole(generally drilled using bone or wood with an abrasive) has an accumulation of mineral deposits lining the inner walls. A typical sign of age. I have owned this pieces for quite a long time and have been apraised by arqueologist at the INAH( Instituto Nacional de Antropologia e Historia) National Institute of Anthropology and History of Mexico city in chapultepec. this is aztec shell pendant made out of deep green jade it almost look black. This an ancient Olmec bead that is made out of green stone-most certainly. Jade. It is about 3/4ths of an inch in diameter and very thick(about 1/2 in. It is wrapped in genuine gold wire and it is suspended from a fine cord of rolled leather. Really nice. It will fit a 16 in. neck easily. So it is unisex. If you prefer, a gold chain will work, too. It is well carved and etched. Exhibiting all the facial appearances of an aborigine from central American region of Mexico and the yucatan. The suspension hole is correctly drilled via the stick and sand method. Good authigenic accumulations and patina. Engraving on the back side appears to be 19th century in age. This is a nicely made tourist trade item. Well polished with good patina and over all use and wear. Grade 10+ museum. Pre-columbian Mayan Jade Quetzal or Macaw Pendant, Guanacaste, Nicoya Region
This Pre-Columbian Mayan pendant is a combination of mottled Jadeite(most probable) and the main stone. Which might be schist. It is either a representation of a Scarlet Macaw, or a Quetzel(more likely the Quetzal because of the strange bump on the top-rear of the head) and they worshiped the Quetzal bird. You have to remember that back then they weren't just making a pendant of'some bird' like we might do) it would always be a little portrait of whatever they were making a pendant of. The hole has been bow-drilled from both sides. This was a process where they took a stone arrowpoint on a shaft. Turned it with a tiny bow which had a deerhide string, and rotated it back-and-forth until they just penetrated the other side. Then, they turned it over and did it from that side. It is a time consuming process; but once they were done ... morethey would end up with a hole that had a 45-degree angle on each side. Erosion has eroded-away the softer stone. Leaving the harder rock exposed as rounded green lumps. Best guess as to who made it: the Chorotega or Mangue People circa 600AD Size: 2 5/8" 66.7mm) long x 3/4" 19mm) wide x 1/4" 6.35mm) thick Weight: Less than 40g(1.4 oz) It has two ground grooves on either side where his feet might be. Probably to accentuate his tail.

Pre-Columbian Carved JADE Pendant ~ From an old collection!
Greeting Fellow Kollectors! Up for sale are from my most recent finds! This beautiful antique hand carved Haida wooden mask came from a wonderful estate of a man who was described by his widow as a'an amateur Indian Jones of sorts' He was an early film documentary film maker who travelled and explored all over the world and hence where his extensive collection of interesting and amazing artifacts came from. This pendant was told to me to be Pre-Columbian in origin as the original owner had a vast collection of such artifacts. Collected in the 50's and 60's. It has a wonderful patina and is carved with by a skilled hand. The item looks very ancient and there are no signs of modern tooling. It's definitely nephrite or Jade. It has good weight. I am not an expert and have no paper work to accompanying any of the pieces from ... morethis collection. But based on the story of the former owner's widow, I believe them to be old. I met him while on vacation and struck up a conversation about antiques and from there. Was invited to his humble home to view his collection which he personally found on the island over a period of about 50 years, since he was a kid playing in the jungles.
