Kept over the years by the landowners descendants-who migrated to New York City- this outstanding artifact was found in a field outside the southern town of Coamo. Just off the current PR-556 roadway. The area around Coamo was a hot-bed of Taino activity(900 to 1500 AD) before the war-like Arawaks and Columbus messed things up. Farmers continue to pull out undocumented artifacts from that seemingly gentle. Peaceful people, who appeared to have a lot of time to make rather interesting personal stone tools/items. SEE ADDITIONAL PHOTOS AT BOTTOM OF PAGE* GENUINE Pre Columbian Jade Axe God Pendant Figurine 6th– 7th Century Mesoamerican Costa Rica This is a genuine Pre Columbian jade figure pendant. Commonly called an“axe god” because of the shape. Although all of these jade figures are rare today. This one is especially unusual due to the fact that it has defined legs instead of the more common“axe” bottom, although it still maintains the traditional taper of the standard axe shape when viewed for the side. The positioning of the arms, folded upwards on each side of the chest(as in later Pre-Columbian gold figures) is also less typical than the standard figures which usually place the arms parallel across the chest. Under magnification you can see supple tooling marks throughout the surface. The marks are typical of the time period and not perfectly ... moreparallel as modern tool marks are. The surface has a nice“soft” look. Again typical for an original Mesoamerican piece, unlike the often harsh cuts and sharp edges caused by modern tools and the overall lack of finesse that the original Pre Columbian artist were so skilled at achieving(although much of that look is due to the type of tools used at the time, which would make it difficult to achieve the harsh lines that are common on modern pieces, caved with modern tools) The right foot has what I think is a small chip. Although its edges aren’t rough or sharp so perhaps it’s just an imperfection that was in the stone and not completely carved away when it was made. You can see the“chip” in the last two photos at the bottom of the page. Other than that the piece is in good shape. The hand drilled suspension hole(generally drilled using bone or wood with an abrasive) has an accumulation of mineral deposits lining the inner walls. A typical sign of age. The use of jade in Costa Rica comes to an end about 500- 600 AD. When there was a cultural shift towards gold for use in luxury items. The overall style of this figure is typical of this period. Northwestern Chihuahua, Mexico, in the river basin.This implement was manufactured, possibly, to cut wooden beams and to aid in general construction, a well-made piece. Carved in hard-gray stone with extra-wide shallow groove, angular poll, three-quarter grooved design, one flat side. Very good condition. Smooth surface, age wear, unfortunately the other end is broken off in antiquity as sign of heave use. Size: 4" long x 2 1/2" wide x 2" thick with over 1" wide ridged groove.

VERY NICE PRE-COLUMBIAN SONORA STONE AXE HEAD 3/4 GROOVE. From the North of Sinaloa and the plains of the rivers Fuerte. Mayo and Yaqui to the Sierra Madre Occidental stood the Huatabampo Tradition made up of farming communities using the variety of coastal resources. From the Mayo region, Sonora, came this very nice piece carved in hardstone, good overall symmetry, 3/4 grooved with rounded poll. The grooved axe resembles the stone celt in having a wedge-shaped cutting edge for wood working. The axe, however, has a groove for mounting the axe, close to the poll, on a wooden handle. Pretty good condition. Some blows in cutting edge caused at the time of discovery. Size: 5" long x 2" wide x 1 3/4" deep.

Cuba primitive precolumbian Taino Ciboney hand axe celt
This hand axe was found in Eastern Cuba about 50 years ago by a Cuban student. The government museum offered to buy it for some ridiculous low amount and the student decided to keep it. It was sold to me 40 years later. I'm not sure whether it is Taino or Ciboney. In different museums. I see it listed as one or the other. It was used to cut meat and everything else. Axe was excavated from"Pacuare" on Linea Vieja in the Guapiles area of Costa Rica and was a gift from Jose Francisco Moya Gomez of the La Lola Cacao Farm near Siquirres, Limon Province of Costa Rica to Allen Young of the Milwaukee Public Museum on March 13, 1984. This light green jade bird axe figure was brought to the US from Costa Rica in 1994 from a collection that had been amassed by a local collector over the prior 50 years. The collection is mostly from finds after heavy rains in Guanacaste Province. Measures almost 3& 1/2 inches long by 2& 1/8 inches wide and about 1/4 inch at the widest. The jade is translucent in many places and has a beautiful. Fragile glow. All measurements are approximate, the figure is not exactly those sizes. 3 1/4" Grooved Effigy Axe, Porphyry Hardstone, x Lynn Langdon, G9.5 Museum Qual
1656-2013) Effigy Grooved Axe made of a rhyolite feldspar porphyry hardstone. This specimen measures approx 3 1/4" x 2 1/8" x 1 1/8" and has been pecked. Ground, abraded, and partially drilled with a 4/4 hafting groove. It is nicely patinated with abundant use polish particularly on the bit end. It is in near mint condition save for a some very minor ancient nicks on the bit, G9.5-10 Museum Quality. The head appears to be that of a bird or some sort of aquatic creature with eyes, nose, open mound and crown. It definitely has a full groove and what appears to be a partial second groove likely created to facilitate hafting. Was found by Lynn Langdon during the 1950's on private land located near Nayarit, West Mexico, x Hank Johnson Collection and cataloged as LLL 329. Comes with a NWAC SOP.

Pre-Columbian Mexican effigy axe head
EFFIGY AXE HEAD I offer for sale a pre-Columbian effigy axe head of origin in Mexico. The axe head was given to my family 60 years ago by a Mexican farmer. My family was in the fresh produce business with growers in Sinaloa and Sonora. Mexico. My mother was interested in archeology and in particular ancient Mexican cultures and was thrilled to receive this axe head. The artifact has remained in our family for six decades, little compared to the centuries it has survived. The following are two emails from some of those I contacted. I found a couple of fairly similar effigy axes in the online catalog of the American Museum of Natural History(AMNH) New York, that were collected in the late 1930s by an archaeologist named Gordon Ekholm. So I emailed your pictures to a colleague of mine who works in Sonora and Sinaloa. I’ve attached his reply ... morebelow. I hope this information is helpful. Thanks for sharing this fine example of Sinaloan workmanship. As far as I know. These tend to be found between approximately the Sonoran border and about Culiacán; this area corresponds roughly with the Huatabampo tradition within Sinaloa, although we found a similar though cruder dog effigy maul at Rincón de Buyubampo, located within the Serrana tradition(formerly referred to as the Alamos or southern branch of the Río Sonora tradition) of the Sierra Madre foothills. I don't know if they might have an Aztatlán tradition affiliation or not-I'll try and let you know what I discover. As to their phase/dates, I believe they are mostly associated with the Guasave period(1000-1450 CE) of the Huatabampo tradition. Recently I contacted relevant departments at the University of Arizona and was connected with authorities who offered some leads. One collector who made a generous offer. Suggested that this effigy axe head is made from a stone used further south in Mexico, perhaps in the Yucatan and was eventually brought to Sinaloa centuries ago where it was discovered 60 years ago.
