It's painted black; not sure how long that paint has been on. But there are some rusted spots over the paint so it's been on for quite a while, if not original. The rails slip into the end board pieces and it's very easy to put together. It may take a few taps with a hammer to get it in all the way. One of the sides has a small chunk out of the piece that the rail slips into, but once it's in there, it stays in place. It would be an easy repair. The metal wheel on each caster is approximately 1-1/2 inches in diameter and is approximately 3/4 inches in width. The casters are designed to fit inside of a hollow tube and have a circular piece of metal that the tube sits on after they are inserted into the tube. These casters have a wonderful patina on them. White Antique Cast Iron Double Bed Frame And Siderails(Side Rails) We bought this bed nearly 30 years ago and had it sand blasted. Primed and painted for our daughters and it was a real showpiece. After it was no longer needed it was put in our storage barn and has been in a covered location for the past many years. It has developed some rust and would need to be at least partially redone to restore its beauty. The brass toppers would still polish up real nice but would most likely need to be replaced as they do develop splits after a time as a few of these have done.
