Double-lobed pottery jar painted with red and black geometric patterns over a cream base, with a standing bird(akin to a penguin) on one lobe, flared spout on the other and openwork bridge connecting. There is a small whistle under the bird's beak which makes a very lovely tone. 8-1/2"L x 6"H. Repaired area on one lobe, else just about choice with very strong paint. Proper restoration would make that repair look much better- email for details. PROVENANCE: Ex-L. Margulis Collection. Australia, acquired in 1995. Pre Columbian Chimu Peruvian Whistling Vessel - 1470 AD
A wonderful ancient pre-Columbian whistling vessel. From the Chimu culture, dating to approximately 1470- 1532 A.D. An attractive burnished. Double chambered bottle in the form of a stylized bird. One chamber of globular form with flattened base and narrow tapered spout. The second chamber joined at the lower body by a cylindrical watercourse and at the top by a strap handle. The body and neck of the second chamber modelled in the form of a stylized bird, with wings, legs and head. Added linear decoration in red. Upon blowing into the spout. A beautiful whistling sound is produced, possibly intended to replicate the sound of the bird depicted on the vessel. This same noise that we can hear today would have enchanted the ancient Peruvians who created this enigmatic piece. Until conquered by the Inca in the fifteenth century. The Chimu ruled ... moremuch of the coast around their capital of Chan Chan in northern Peru. Ancient Peruvians left no written records, thus their material remains are the only existing link to this long gone and intriguing ancient people. this lot contains vintage Peruvian Shamanic Whistling Vessels- set of 7- by Daniel K. Statnekov. Who discovered them in the 1970's& researched pre-Columbian uses. he constructed his own for modern applications of their spiritual healing lore. they are not signed, but all my research shows these are his original reproductions. as for any damage, the only square belly vessel has 2 areas where glaze was applied, they look as though they have been there since firing, like repairs. there is no visible damage& the whistle works just fine, but the glaze is there just the same. this same vessel has a chip in handle which can be seen in picture. there is one other that has a small disc type chip on backside also in a picture. they were found wrapped in only 6 velvet bags with the 7th loose. they are a great salvage find. thank you for ... morelooking.
