Terra cotta pottery shard of a bird head or man/bird head, clay figure was obviously part of a larger piece, I believe this shard came from either Mexico or possibly Georgia or north Florida area of all places, I was told it was either Mayan or Caribe Indian in origin, measures 2 3/4" x 1 3/4" x 1 1/2" in very good condition as shown in photos, very unusual relief or figural piece of ancient pottery. This is a terra cotta Moche Vessel from Peru. It is in excellent condition with no chips or cracks. It has been carved and slip painted and appears to have a form similar to an artichoke. This item is 7.5" tall x 6.5" deep and 5.5" wide. This was originally purchased on eBay from the FernandezLeventhal Gallery in Oct. 2001 as item# 1471707572. Although this particular item does not come with an authentication certificate. The gallery is well know for their high level of authenticity and care regarding the background on all of the objects it sells. Quote from ICOM Museum: Moche vessels are generally found in tombs located in the northern. Coastal departments of Lambayeque and La Libertad, and in the north of the Ancash department, Peru. The most important items date from between 200 and 700 AD. A charming terra cotta"bubble" figure from Colima Mexico dating ca 300B.C.300A.D. The effigy measures 5" in height by 3" at the widest diameter. The vessel has a hollow chamber at the rear for adding incense. A great little character with upward deeply slanting incised eyes and a wry smile. Wonderful large bowl olla shaped Pre-Coumbian vessel/bowl that is solid and has no cracks or chips. Good carved markings surround the neck of vessel. Scattered mineral deposits and it has a strong earthy smell when dampened inside. There are no really clear root markings. The color variations and darkening of surface areas typical of old fired vessel. Nice coarse texture and it is sturdy. A great basic piece for any collection. Great price for this item. It is 51/2 inches tall and 6 inches in diameter. A very pleasing shape and proportioned piece. Pre-Columbian stylized head. Give to me by someone who found it on the beach in Spanish Wells. Eleuthera, Bahamas many years ago. May have come from a wrecked Spanish Treasure ship since many went down in the area or may have ben brought there by indigenous people. Water worn but clearly ancient. 3 1/2 inches high. Hollow. This is not a replica but a genuine artifact many hundreds or thousands of years old.

I purchased this item a few years ago from a dealer. She couldn't tell me much about where it came from or what it is. I believe this bowl is from Costa Rica. It has very bright coloring and a beautiful patina. The legs are bird heads and all three contain clay marbles that make noise when you move the bowl. Note that there are areas of chipped paint and there are two chips along the rim as pictured. Wear is consistent with age on this piece. It measures approximately 9.25" in diameter(it's uneven and not a perfect circle) and stands just under 6" high. I am not an expert on Pre-Colombian pottery. We purchased this pottery figure about 10 years ago in southern California. The seller at that time was unable to tell us anything about it including where he had originally obtained it. We can’t tell you much more ourselves. The figure is approximately 5 ¼” in height; 3 ½” in width; and 3 ¾” in depth. It is terra cotta and we have no idea who made it or when. It has two holes in the bottom rear(see photos) and at first we thought it might be a whistle. However. Upon reflection we think that at least one of the holes is a firing vent hole. The figure is a male nude wearing large earrings. A necklace and some sort of pendant that hangs over his distended belly. The stylized decoration on it probably provides the best clue as to the cultural origin of the item. It came from the estate of some wealthy collectors in Washington. D.C. about 20 years ago. It measures 6 ½” tall and 3 ¾” in diameter. There is some wear as one would expect due to age and some dark spots as shown. Depicted on the vase are two seated figures each wearing a full headdress of fantastic feathers. They each have ear spots highlighted in a second color. One hand of each figure extend s palm upward. There appears to be a fire. With smoke rising in a classic Mayan design. The background has been carved away to create the raised designs of the vessel. The entire vessel is ringed both top and bottom with the same second color as the ear spot.
