B.C.A.D. ART 19th CENTURY SPANISH/CUBAN "CUTACHA" SWORD
19th Century military"Cutacha" used by the Spanish Army in Cuba. An entity in its right. Other edged tool-weapons were used in metropolitan Spain and in Africa for similar purposes. Most likely because of the condition of the sword, it has been used and the edge is still sharp. The tip is a little worn. The no. is the stock number and a makers mark. The pommel is the head of an eagle. Cutachas were carried more as a symbol of office than as a weapon and were in civil life used by planters and overseers to whack surly peasants with. Thus the chisel edge which would cut just bruise. Actually the side of the blade was used by police to whack miscreants. Intended to be hurtful but non-lethal. Killing peasants is like killing slaves. Not only inhumane but bad economics. After all a good slave in the old south cost $500 which was a goodly ... moresum in those days. An authentic German designed sword made for Cuban officers. Etched in the guard of the sword is the year 1855. Directly under that are the initials J.M.C. and on the opposite side a flower. There is also a makers mark on the top of the sword handle, the letters"J.P. The condition of the sword leads me to believe that the sword was used in battle. Antique unique unusual machete made in El Salvador. Good condition considering age with scratching and tarnish patina. It has a coronet engraved over the maker's name Coroneta Imacasa on the blade. Hefty smaller item. Longest of machete 15 inches. And blade 10 inches. It has a blond colored bone handle with some attractive darkening with age. Well used by the look of it. Comes with an ornately tooled leather scabbard with tassels. A belt loop, and with the letters Heche En El Salvador printed on top od the scabbard(made in El Salvador) The reverse side of the scabbard's top is designed to look like a face. There is.
