It is hard to date the piece with any precision, but I would estimate it to be at least 800- 1200 years old. One of the figures has a pelican-like face, with a crocodile back. The figure merges into another with a turtle-like face above the bust of a man. Unlike pottery figures, carved stone pieces are quite uncommon. The carving measures 6.5" wide. 5" tall, and 2" deep. It is in relatively good condition, with a few minor chips at the base, and one larger chip to the bottom of one figure. The other concern is that the"turtle's" eye on one side is missing. The were-jaguar figure is made of what I believe is volcanic rock. He is incised with two suns and a stalk of maize representing the cycle of life. His upward looking face is in the traditional Olmec paedomorphic pattern with open downcurved mouth. Wide nose, thick lips, hollow almond shaped eyes and slim double pierced ears. His hands and feet have morphed into jaguar-like paws. There are incisions or cuts on each of his shoulders, maybe to help release the jaguar from the man. The tortured facial features are intended to convey, not ferocity and aggressiveness, but emotional stress beyond endurance. He is either dead ... moreor dying; the avatar of the living and dead. INCREDIBLE pre-Columbian Chavin stone sculpture- Ayahuasca or Snake Charm This pre-Columbian Chavin stone piece is a truely one of a kind item. Made of Basalt. It is one of the nicest pieces I have ever owned. These are often listed in antiquities books as'snake' charms. Although given the time and location I strongly suspect they are intended to be Ayahuasca Caapi Vine sculptures. If I am correct in this, this was almost certainly an elite grave item, as the Chavin culture was ruled by shamans. There appears to be an archeological tag number on the bottom. This piece was picked up many years ago at a Denver estate sale, where it was found packed in a box with newspapers from the 1940's. The Chavín were a civilization that developed in the northern Andean highlands of Peru from 900 BC to 200 BC. Also commonly called yage, is a psychedelic brew made out of Banisteriopsis caapi vine alone or in combination with various plants. It is often mixed with the leaves of dimethyltryptamine(DMT)containing species of shrubs from the genus Psychotria.
