Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis Railway, also known as the Big Four Railroad and commonly abbreviated CCC&StL, was a railroad company in the midwestern United States. Its primary routes were in Illinois. Indiana. Michigan. And Ohio. At the end of 1925 it reported 2391 route-miles and 4608 track-miles; that year it carried 8180 million net ton-miles of revenue freight and 488 million passenger-miles. The railroad was formed on June 30. 1889 by the merger of the Cleveland. Columbus, Cincinnati and Indianapolis Railway. The Cincinnati. Indianapolis, St. Louis and Chicago Railway and the ... moreIndianapolis and St. Louis Railway. The following year. Authentic Boston& Albany Railroad stock certificate issued in the 1940's and 50's. The vignette engraving is quite possibly the nicest I have encountered. The entire vignette is a picture of a railroad crossing a bridge on a harbor with sailboats. A steamboat and other ships on the water, as well as buildings in the background. In the center of the vignette is a picture of an indian with a bow and arrow. In addition, at the bottom of the certificate is another small vignette of two allegorical figures, with an eagle over them. Most of these certificates are actually filled out by hand and have the actual signatures(not a facsimile) of the President and Treasurer of the railroad. The company was chartered in 1867 and its seal is on each certificate. The P&LE was known as the"Little Giant" due to the amount of tonnage that it moved was dramatically out of proportion to its actual number of route miles. Originally chartered in Illinois on February 27. 1848, as the Rock Island and LaSalle Rail Road Company, the road was renamed Chicago and Rock Island Rail Road Company on February 7, 1851, and Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad Company in 1866. In Texas the Rock Island operated 633 miles of main track plus joint ownership of the Burlington-Rock Island. Three main Rock Island routes crossed the state. The Cleveland& Pittsburgh Railroad was chartered in 1836 by the Pennsylvania Railroad Company in response to public interest in building a rail line between the 2 cities. Originally known as the Cleveland, Warren& Pittsburgh, the first charter was set aside until 1845, when interest in building a rail line from Cleveland to the Pennsylvania state line revived. Lack of funding delayed construction in Cleveland and forced the city council to ask for construction support at a public hearing in 1847.
