Title, Pende Standing Male figure DR Congo African, Type of Object, Carving, Country of Origin, Democratic Republic of Congo, People, Pende Kwango or ... moreWestern Pende, Materials, Wood. Cotton loth, cowrie shells, Approximate Age, second half 20th century, Dimensions, 23 inches H. x 7.5 inches W. Overall Condition, Fair. Most of our pieces have spent decades on at least two continents. And have been treasured by several owners. Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. Damage/Repair, large cracks in head. Face and along the torso, crack in pubis, large chips in feet with missing toes, Additional Information: This interesting figure of a male standing with hands on waists is attributed to the Pende of the Kwango River region. The Pende are known for their numerous artistic forms ranging from house decorations. Figural sculptures, numerous carved ivory pendants, and a wide variety of masks. Figures among the Pende in the past were not noted as often as the masks and when identified are known as ancestor figures or maternity figures placed on the roofs of chief’s houses other female figures are placed near the doorway. This is further complicated by traditions of figural sculptural usage varies among the Pende divided into Eastern and Western groups. It seems like this standing figure is wearing a Mbuya mask. In this case it may represent the esprit of Mukanda, connected to the initiation of young boys and uses as a protective spirit. 78671* All content. Old insect damage arrested, cracks in head, in torso, in carved skirt and in base, worn patina, chips in places, Additional Information: A well used carving from the Igbo people that belongs to the category of Ikenga shrine pieces. As it is shown on this example. Most Ikenga are generally sculpted as a male anthropomorphic figure with rams horns rising vertically from the head and holding staff or knife in hands. An Ikenga is a personal shrine dedicated to the individual’s courage and physical strength. It comes from the Igbo of Nigeria who are the largest tribal grouping along the lower Niger River and the Niger Delta Region. Igbo art is diverse in its many forms. Materials, and use, and is broken into a number of sub-styles based upon history and the local physical environment. Much of their art is open to public view where the Igbo are reminded of their ancestors and of the various spirits of the Igbo pantheon of gods. Kept in personal shrines, Ikenga honor the success of an individual in business or battle or will honor their social standing. They incorporate a person’s spirit, his abilities, his family’s prestige as well as his ancestors. Offerings are made of chalk and cola nut. I have examined this piece and agree with the description. Title, Songye Power Figure Nkishi Custom Stand DR Congo African Type of Object, figure. Statue, Country of Origin, Democratic Republic of Congo, People, ... moreSongye, Materials, Wood. Pigment, Approximate Age, Second half Twentieth Century, Dimensions, 12 inches H. Overall Condition, Poor to fair, Damage/Repair, worn patina. Shallow cracks, chips, and dents in places, Additional Information: A well used Songye male figure. There are no addenda or magical elements attached to this figure and we can admire the fully Songye style with its cubist proportions and strong squares and lines rhythms. This figure has a strongly defined body and the well-known Songye jutting chin and geometric nose with the eyes sculpturally higher on the forehead. The age of the object can be seen in the wear of the surface through long use and the accumulation of offerings. The surface on this piece shows it has been receiving offerings or sacrifices or ritual libations. Many groups in the greater Congo area. And elsewhere, use art to meet the contingencies of everyday life through the activities of the local priest or diviner known as the Nganga. These individuals of great spiritual strength and inductive abilities use the rituals, secret formulae and sculptures to heal and prevent the activities of malevolent forces. Sculpture like this are known as Nkishi and often serve to divine the future, control one s destiny, and forestall evil-doers or to work magic and most importantly to gain the attention of the spirit world. Among the Songye and other Bantu language speakers, sculpture such as this Nkishi serves as the contact point between the spirits and the Nganga, it is where the ritual activity of the diviner meets spiritual presence. Recommended Reading: Dunja Hersak. 1985, SONGYE MASKS AND SCULPTURE FIGURES. I have examined this piece and agree with the description. Niangi Batulukisi. Ph.D. 71938* All content. Title, Ngbaka Ngbandi Standing Figure Nabo DR Congo African, Type of Object, Sculpture. Carving, Country of Origin, Democratic Republic of Congo, People, ... moreNgbaka or Ngbandi, Materials, Wood. Pigment. Approximate Age, Second half 20th Century, Dimensions, 17 inches H. x 3.5 inches W. Overall Condition, Good. Damage/Repair, several cracks in the back. Chips in places Additional Information: This figure comes from the culturally dynamic northwestern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo along the river systems feeding the great Congo River. Especially from the Ngbaka or Ngbandi. This is a well-carved figure with painted lines on the body, a serene face and frontal scarification typical of the Ngbaka-Ngbandi style. The Ngbaka moved into the area inhabited by the Ngbandi in an area bounded by the Ubangi and Lualaba River systems and as a result both groups share sculpture forms and the details of scarification that often leads to some confusion as to the attribution of their sculpture. Ngbaka use anthropomorphic figures. Generally in pairs, to represent mythological and distant family founders known as Seto a male and Nabo his wife that are kept on family shrines. Ngbaka figures take their red color from being washed in palm oil and red tukula powder made from tree bark. The facial features are divided by a vertical line of scarification that in other figures extends onto the lower body. The shaping of the details of the body are truly a study and sculptural inventiveness. Recommended Reading: Burssens. H. Les Peuplades de l'Entre Congo-Ubangi(Ngbandi,Ngbaka, Mbandj, Ngombe, et gens d eau) 1958.

Pre-Columbian Vera Cruz Standing Figure Circa 600 A.D.
Vera Cruz figure depicting a warrior with helmet or ball player. This piece comes from the collection of deceased collector Ed Young who came to New Mexico in the 1940's after WWII and traveled frequently to Mexico during the 1950's and 60's when he collected pre-Columbian objects. This ceramic sculpture is in excellent condition but has a repair. See crack in neck area. There is still earth clinging to the sculpture but underneath in places can be seen a light colored slip and there is black pigment(probably chapopote) on the thighs and lower part of the face. The chapopote.Round nose ornament, treatment of arms and legs, and the way the appendages terminate suggest an early classic era Vera Cruz.
