If a twin dies, an image dedicated to Ibeji,the deity of twins, is carved to serve as the earthly abode for the spirit of the deceased. AFRICAN DOLLS FOR PLAY AND MAGIC, by Dagan. A strand of ancient neolithic large shell beads from Mali. West Africa. Who knows how old these beads are, shell beads have been found in Africa that are estimated to be 75,000 years old. I would guess them to be neolithic to paleolithic. The beads have calcified because they have been buried for thousands of years, this causes them to be softer than the more recent ones. I have rinsed them in clear water to remove the white powdery residue. The condition is very good. T he beads measure in diameter 8 mm to 18.6 mm and in length 10 mm to 42.7 mm. I bought these beads from a n arts and antiquities dealer in Portland. Oregon, wh o had received them as part of the estate of a longtime collector. Unfortunately. The specifics of time and place of origin were not in the records. I took them to a highly respected dealer whose opinions I value. And he was unwilling to commit ~ except to say they were probably not early Channel Island(Chumash) beads, a theory of mine based on the presence of spire-lopp ed. Side-drilled, small disk and rectangular olivella beads. The second dealer said the dentalium shells probably point to another region. A collector wrote to say they look like South American beads. H e questioned the dentalium beads. Saying ~ contrary ... moreto what the second dealer said ~ they didn't look like any he'd seen from the West Coast of North America. Some. At least, could be olivella tube beads. Check the new photos and decide for yourself! Since I don't have provenance. I'm offering the beads at what I feel is a more than fair price. Think about what's represented here: a window into the distant. Possibly early Holocene past. If you buy them. I hope it's with an eye to pinning down their time and place. And don't dismiss a Chumash origin. Seeing the bead off their string. I'm leaning that way. I bought these at the estate auction of a Virginia woman who was quite a collector. I don't have any idea when she bought the string but the old price tag is still on it. So I left it there. I've seen lots of heishi beads of every description, including shell heishi, but these are the thinnest I've ever seen. I thought they may be oyster, but on doing a bit more looking, I think they are too thin for oyster and therefore must be clam or some other thin shell. I counted out 3 inches worth and they averaged 42 per inch. There are 40 inches of heishi on the string. PLEASE see my EXCELLENT FEEDBACK and BUY with CONFIDENCE! Oregon, wh o had received them as part of the estate of a longtime collector. Unfortunately. The specifics of time and place of origin were not in the records. I took them to a highly respected dealer whose opinions I value. And he was unwilling to commit ~ except to say they were probably not early Channel Island(Chumash) beads, a theory of mine based on the presence of spire-lopp ed. Side-drilled, small disk and rectangular olivella beads. The second dealer said the presence of dentalium shells suggests a more northern origin. A collector wrote to say they look like South American beads. He questioned the dentalium beads. Saying they didn't look like any he'd ... moreseen from the West Coast of North America. Some, at least, could be olivella tube beads. Zoom in and decide for yourself. Don't dismiss a Chumash origin. We know dentalium shells were traded down the c oast from British Columbia. A very nice looking and colorful string of graduated size mixed shell and soft stone beads from pre-Spanish contact(pre-Columbian) coastal Peru. Dating from about 100 to 1500 AD. This item came from an ancient habitation site(from Moche, to Sican, to Incan? in northern coastal Peru however, many of the shells may have been trade from a more northern coastal region. The string consists of varying size hand made colorful shell(including bright orange spondyllus shell) and soft stone beads. Including some nice bright blue turquoise. T he condition is mostly good. Showing some age and wear overall, about 3 to 6 mm in diameter and about 17 inches in length.
