Title, Dogon Bearded Female Seated Figure Mali Africa, Type of Object, Carvng, Country of Origin, Mali, People, Dogon, Materials, wood and encrustation, ... moreApproximate Age, mid 20th century, Dimensions, Height: 18 Inches, Overall Condition, Fair to good. Most of our pieces have spent decades on at least two continents. And have been treasured by several owners.  Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. Damage/Repair, both legs broken off and repaired. Crack in one side of head and face, Additional Information: This well used sculpture is out of the ordinary when measured to the mainstream of Dogon art. There is no doubt as to its origin among the Dogon however is not illustrated in the literature and due to its unique seated angular shape and its bisexual character. It is unusual and exceptional. Among the Dogon of the Bandiagara escarpment near the Niger River in Mali, art and mythology are often the same, sharing visual images whether carved or spoken of during their rituals. A carving such as this old example of a seated figure representing either an ancestor or primordial being is kept in the lineage elder’s house and is used during annual rites that took place during the winter solstice known as ‘goru’. The figure has a man’s beard and a woman’s breasts depicting a being that is in keeping with Dogon creation myths in which tell that beings were both male and female at one time. The head and headdress are particularly interesting. The sharply carved arms and legs and the shaping of the head and the mass of the upper chest makes this the work of a master carver of some skill. This old carving would hold a prominent place in a collection. I have examined this piece and agree with the description. Niangi Batuluki

This example is a pure Bassa sculpture. Features on Bassa figures are more angular or cubist than the Dan or Mende figures. This figure with horns depicts a dwarf. Very uncommon in Africa. The highly stylized legs have remains of black pigment, particularly on the buttocks. Ancient Pre-Columbian Nayarit Pottery Seated Female Fertility Figure - 100 BC
A high quality. Particularly vibrant ancient west Mexican Nayarit figure, dating to the proto-Classic period, around 100 BC- 100 AD. Sitting upon a two legged stool. The naked figure stares out into the distance through the hollow slits of her eyes, the mouth held open. She clutches her sides in the pose typical of Nayarit female figures, the gaunt features of the face contrasting with the broad body and exaggerated breasts. Her hair tied up into an elaborate coiffure, she wears three spools in each ear and a thick collar around the neck. This is not only an enchanting piece of pre-Columbian art. It tells the story of Nayarit ritual practices and traditional beliefs. We can see the notion of the earth as the great creator and sustainer of humanity, the fertility of the soil touched by the stool is conflated with the fertility of the woman ... moreseated upon it. This idea of shared fertility between the earth and female members of society is still held in some traditional South/Central American societies, where women alone appear in the fields to carry out the first planting of the season. For further reading on the subject. Please see: Townsend. R.F. ed. 1998. Ancient West Mexico: Art and Archaeology of the Unknown Past. Chicago: Art Institute of Chicago. Height: 16 5/8 inches. Condition: Excellent. With encrustations, intact and unrestored. Provenance: Formerly in the US collection of Harry and Elinor Lynn. Acquired from the Hokin Gallery, Palm Beach, Florida on the 9th January, 1975(the original invoice from this sale will be included to the new purchaser upon request) Mr Harry Lynn(1916– 2006) was perhaps best known as the owner of the Washington Coliseum when the Beatles performed their first U.S. concert there on the 11th of February 1964. Lynn was born in Kansas City but spent most of his childhood in Omaha. During World War II he joined the Army and was stationed in France and England. Moving to Washington D.C. in 1948. In late 1959 he purchased the building which would make his name. Over the years he
PRE COLUMBIAN ECUADOR POTTERY SEATED FEMALE FIGURE JAMACOAQUE AUTHENTIC
PRE COLUMBIAN FIGURE ECUADOR JAMACOAQUE This is an authentic pottery Jamacoaque seated figure from Ecuador. Although small. 3 1/4" high, it still has nice detail and is very three dimensional. It seems to be a seated female wearing an elaborate headdress, necklaces and large ear plugs. The hands are resting on the knees and are worn and she is missing the tips of both feet. The figure has the characteristic ritually deformed head seen in the side and back photographs. The nose is worn but the facial features are still quite visible. It will stand by itself as the bottom is flat. There is no decoration on the back which is completely smooth. The color of the clay is beige and uniform in color. It will display nicely when lit from above as the details show better with shadows rather than straight on face front. The colored cloth was an ... moreexperiment but it also make the details more distinct. The figure is from a private collection and has not been cleaned.
