This is the third of three pairs of stirrups I bought in La Paz Bolivia a number of years ago. IT WAS AN ADVENTURE, BELIEVE ME! You see. It was the weekend and I was bored. So I started out from the hotel in pursuit of small treasures I could bring home. I was thinking coins, stamps, certificates for Land Grants from the King.things like that. Well, I met this tiny little fellow that had super blue eyes and a weird hat. After he told me he had just sold his last Land Grant he asked if I would be willing to walk a few blocks to see his hidden treasure trove. It wasn't raining and he only came up to my belly button so I said sure, why not. Off we went and boy could that little rascal walk. Everyone is out of breathe in La Paz ... morebecause of the altitude but when we got to this garage-like structure I was sure I'd never recover. He told me to wait outside while he turned on the lights. I was praying for a power failure. But when he came back I had recovered both my breathe and dignity so I was ready to venture on in. Talk about cobwebs and dust.this place had never been cleaned. And it was choked full of old furniture. Lamps, paintings and small art items. While the heart and bank account were willing the common sense factor said small, small, small because whatever I bought had to go on the plane. I hate common sense. But that is what I followed so these stirrups are part of the loot I could get in the suitcase. They measure 8" toe to heel and about 7" tall. These are a bit wider. They are wrapped with a metal band that would have attached to the leather strap that would have come from the saddle. I know all this from watching Cowgirl Rodeo. How old are they. I'm 70 and they have more wrinkles than I do so I figure they are a century or two back. ANTIQUE PAIR OF JADE EAR ORNAMENTS
These 1-7/8" L X 1-7/16" W matched pair of carved. Thin, pale green jade plaques Ca.1200-1000 B.C having incised carvings, each showing a crested bird's head with open work mouth. each perforated at the back of the head for suspension, one with a perforation above the bird eye. Both are intact and in excellent condition. It was common practice in antiquity to recycle and re-carve broken jade pieces objects. Pair of antique Mexican village specific terracotta artifacts, rare combination
This is a unique set of two very old pottery post Pre Columbian pottery vessels made in the same region in a small village in Mexico. I bought the larger bowl first thinking it was Peruvian. And had it looked at. After some research, I found a dealer in Pre Columbian antiquities who recognized the distinct coffee bean pattern. He had travelled throughout Mexico. It belongs to a small village or town in Mexico. Many villages will make a specific design or pattern over years so that you can tell by the pattern where many items of pottery originate and came from. This is old but not ancient. Possibly 150-200 years old. I do not know the region. I bought the bowl piece and then later by coincidence found the smaller one online separately from the first and was struck by the same pattern on both of them. It was interesting to come on the second ... moreas I haven't seen this design. They are of interest because they old and reflect the repetitiveness of certain patterns opin smaller more isolated areas. I think they come from different ages as the stemmed bowl looks newer. Both in good condition. Big one faded a bit more. Some surface scratching. They could make interesting candy bowls as well. Great price for two items. Terracotta. But not a glossy surface. Goes comfortably with pre Columbian art, vessels pottery artifacts, just made a bit den the age likely a couple hundred years after the Spaniards coloniaized much of Mexico. Culture: Colonial Mexico.
