The Aztecs, who arrived in the Valley of Mexico long after Teotihuacán was abandoned, named the ruins Teotihuacán- place of the gods. The Aztecs and the Greeks had the same word for gods- teo. 2) Dimensions. approximately 1 inch by 1" I apologize for not providing metric dimensions. I live in a country that clings to ancient English measuring systems instead of the clearly superior and much more functional metric system. 3) Medium. clay. Hard fired under great heat. 4) Provenance. I found this head(and other heads) in a farmer's field near the center of the ruins of Teotihuacán. Near Mexico City, in 1966 or 1967, when ... moreI was an anthropology student at the Universidad de las Americas in Mexico City. Generally, these farmers' fields were rocky and dusty but rain would wash the dust off the rocks and reveal that some of them had faces- and were terracotta heads and not rocks. Many times, after a rain, I would take a bus from Mexico City to Teotihuacán, explore the farmers' fields, and look for those features that were not visible when covered with dust. In this way, I acquired dozens of precolumbian heads. How to distinguish an authentic precolumbian sculpture from a fake: 1) provinance; know the source; 2) study precolumbian anthropology; see what's in the museums and the books; 3) lick. This is an ancient metal object.Found in Mexico,in the form of a knife or sacrificial scalpel. I believe that it is made of a copper metal alloy and that it has probably been cleaned at some point in the past.Losing alot of the obvious surface green rough outer patina except when you loop it or look closely,then you can clearly see the age. I tried to show the surface patina and wear as well as i could in a couple of close up photos but they are very obvious when studied in person,under a microscope. This item measures approx 4.25" high and approx 6" wide. There is the small word"MEXICO" painted and covered with thin laguer or nail polish.Done by the original owner who labelled most of his items to remember where they came from.pictured in 1 photo with other items aquired from the same collector,not included in this auction ... morebut shown for display purposes) I invite you to put this under a microscope(as i did) as soon as you get this and you will see the many subtleties to the surface which do show very old oxidation and coloring as well as fine pitting and other surface oxidations.Minerals,textures and coloring that can only be built up over time. This very rare figura is from the Xochipala culture. Guererro, Mexico. She dates approximately 500 BC. The figure measures approximately 7 1/2 inches tall x 3 1/2 inches wide x 2 inches deep. Both arms appear to have been broken and professionally repaired and the toes on one foot are missing(see photo) However, for its age, the figura is in excellent condition. The figura was purchased from a reputable dealer of Pre-Columbian art in 1986.
