This estate find of a Nazca Idol contains one opening at top of head. Which is approximately 1/4 of an inch wide. Standing at 9 inches tall and 4 1/2 inches wide, the piece appears to be unrestored with no breaks or cracks. Minor pitting with paint wear as seen in pictures. Base is surrounded by four bird heads. Vintage early 1900's Mayan clay Museum Quality Aztec Toltec Idol God figure
Let me start by saying that this item caught my attention and I hope you see what I saw in it. This piece was picked up in an estate sale and is one of the best early 19th century Mayan sculptures made in Mexico that I've seen. The detail in the head dress and body are outstanding. Its made of clay/ terracotta and stands around 8 1/2" tall the darker shades of grey on the head dress and chest seem to be a light grey wash. The top is hollow so you can look inside to see the workmanship. I hope that someone looking for something for their collection like this will take advantage in getting their hands on this fine item. Beautiful one of a kind antique Pre-Columbian Stone Effigy. Idol, Axe God Figura l Hand- C arved Statue believed to be around 200-600 BC in ag e. This piece is very heavy- weighs just over six(6) pounds and is hand-carved from a gorgeous grey toned stone- you can see the traditional stance and markings that are typical of this p articular era in Pre-Columbian Art. This is a beautiful piece from my family's estate in excellent condition as you can see from the photos. My father had a Doctorate in Pre-Columbian Art History from USC and traveled extensively throughout the world and specifically in Mexico throughout the 1940's-1950's amassing his collection through his traveling and buying at antique and auction houses. Here we have a really neat Pre Columbian ceramic warrior effigy on a wood stand. This small warrior effigy sits 6 1/2" tall on its stand. 3 3/4" wide and 1 3/4" deep. It was crudely made out of terracotta pottery and measures 5 1/4" tall off of the stand. There is a fracture with an old repair where it is inserted onto the pedestal. The base measures 1 3/4" square and on the back is an old information or auction label. This is really neat little effigy figure with a wood pedestal and it make a wonderful addition to any collection. These are very nice pieces of art from Mexico or S. America. They might be pre-Columbian. I'm not an expert. But I purchased these statues from a high-end estates sale where some very nice ancient art was being sold. Must have been a collector. The middle piece(the tallest) is right under 9 inches tall. The one with the broken leg is also about the same hight. The shortest one is seven inches tall. There are some minor chips and discoloration on all pieces(see photos) But all in all, they are in great condition considering their age. They will be carefully packaged to insure no breakage. They are awesome pieces for the collector. I held on to these pieces not wanting to sell them because the were so different and unique, but they should go to someone who knows their worth and appreciate them. The statue stands on its feet, though it is in a seated or hunched position. The front surface is darker than the back. The deeper recesses have a white crystalline residue. The figure stands 5.9" tall, and weighs 27 ounces. Its in good condition save for the lighter color chips and scratches. I am fairly unfamiliar with South American artifacts, and rather than attempt to attribute it, I will let you decide what culture it came from.

Prominently displayed is a great jeweled mantle that hangs on the stomach. The legs are broken off, allowing for an interesting cross section of the two layers of clay. It is around 3x3 inches. These fragments were collected. Sketched, and sold by Larry Borenstein's shop in New Orleans during the 1960's. Borenstein was a founding figure of the culture of modern New Orleans. Mexico. A long, complex culture history of the Guerrero region prevents a finite understanding of who exactly made Mezcala objects. The culture is also called Balsas Culture because it is centered in the upper Balsas River drainage region. It is believed the Mezcala style emerged during the Pre-classic Period, between 700-200 B.C. and continued on into Classic Period to 650 A.D. Objects attributed to the the Mezcala Culture include figurines. Masks, small effigies of animals and objects, beads, pendants and earplug flares. They are carved from a variety of green, gray-green, gray and black color hardstones and jade. Mayan Harvest Idol Terracota Figurines Ancient Artifact Pre-Columbian Maize Gods
I have for sale 3 small Mayan artifacts in a nice decorative case. The label on the display case reads"Three pre-Columbian Mayan idol harvest idols- These were placed in their field to appease their gods and ensure a good harvest" The artifacts are in good condition. Considering their age-easily over 500 years old. However, due to the inherent fragile nature of the neck area on the figurines, both full-bodied figurines have a complete crack that separates the head from the body. The smaller figurine also appears to have a fracture but has stayed intact. They could easily be restored by a little bit of adhesive but I have chosen not to so as to allow the next owner the freedom to choose. Despite the cracks, these items have retained much of their original design with very little erosion. As seen in the photographs, the design contours ... morein the terracotta are in good condition and the handcrafted nature of these items are evidenced by their varying black and brown coloration. This is most likely a result of the curing process, similar to how other old world pottery was made. These artifacts are quite rare and interesting. Given their important role in the Mayan crop planting and harvest ceremonies. The Mayans used an agricultural technique called"slash-and-burn" where woodlands were cut down and burned in order to create fields to grow crops. This style of agriculture was not particularly sustainable for large populations because the soil quality would eventually degrade. The Mayans mainly grew maize and would sow crops in May and harvest them in November. To encourage a bountiful harvest. The Mayans would perform ritualistic ceremonies, including a ceremonial planting of these idols to curry favor with their gods. Historical records of the Mayan religion explains that in their mythology. Deities were involved in all aspects of life, including creating cornfields, planting and harvested corn, conducting business, and forming alliances. This beautiful stone hand carved idol came from a wonderful estate of a man who was described by his widow as a'an amateur Indian Jones of sorts' He was an early film documentary film maker who travelled and explored all over the world and hence where his extensive collection of interesting and amazing artifacts came from. This stone idol was told to me to be Pre-Columbian in origin as the original owner had a vast collection of such artifacts. Collected in the 50's and 60's. It has a wonderful patina and is carved with by a skilled artisan hand. The item looks very ancient and there are no signs of modern tooling. I was told amazing piece came from Guatamala.
