May be some candle wax residue in bowl. There was a fair amount of dust on this item when it was photographed and shows especially on the jagged rim of the bowl. ADDED DETAILS: This is an unusual piece depicting a 4-legged figure with a bowl/vessel on its back. The face is typical for the region-slit eyes. Beaked nose and broad spool ears. The high headress becomes part of the razor-jagged-edge of the bowl. The bowl is broad and deep and is dark. Possibly from incense or small ceremonial burnings. The figure is female/male showing breast and penis. There are faint decorative markings visible randomly throughout. Please view photos ... morecarefully for detail. This piece comes from an extensive estate collection. I am not sure of the exact location this piece is from but I was told this was collected in the early 1900's in Mexico. This is a primitive piece of pottery made in Colima. Mexico circa 400-800 A.D. It is mounted on a wooden pedestal that gives the information about the piece and the back is an advertisement for Valisone Cream. This looks prehistoric and I believe it to be an authentic piece. The ad had me concerned, but the owner of this piece is a retired Archaeologist, so I now feel comfortable again calling this pottery piece an authentic primitive piece from Colima, Mexico. It's 1 3/4 in. 4.5cm) high. 1 7/8 in. 4.7cm) wide and 7/8 in. 2.2cm) thick. It has well detailed features including a wide open mouth indicating it's yelling or screaming something. This facial attitude likely indicates a demon figure in transformation. It's made of weathered fired tan clay and in excellent condition. These heads were once on full human clay figures but were broken off and cast into the fields to ensure crop fertility. It's mounted on a small block of plexiglass ready for display!
