Comes from Spanish colonial Mexico. Philip IV. Assayer"P" Sunk in 1641 off the northeast coast of Hispaniola The Concepción was one of the most significant Spanish wrecks of all time. Serving the Spanish with a loss of over 100 tons of silver and gold treasure. The almiranta of a 21-ship fleet. The Concepción was already in poor repair when the Europe-bound fleet encountered a storm in September. Leaving her disabled and navigating under makeshift sails amid disagreement among its pilots about their location. Weeks later, she grounded on a reef in an area now named the Silver Shoals, just to the east of another shoal known as the Abrojos, ... morewhich the pilots were trying to avoid. After another storm hit the wrecked ship and the admiral and officers left in the ship’s only longboat, the remaining crew resorted to building rafts from the ship’s timbers. Survivors’ accounts pointed to drowning, starvation and even sharks for the loss of around 300 casualties. In the fallout that ensued, none of the survivors could report the wreck’s location with accuracy, so it sat undisturbed until New England’s William Phipps found it in 1687 and brought home tons of silver and some gold, to the delight of his English backers. The Concepción was found again in 1978 by Burt Webber. Rare 1735 Dutch shipwreck Vliegenthart/Flying Hart-Spanish silver 8 Reales cob
Salvaged shipwreck treasure from the Dutch ship Vliegenthart(Flying Hart) circa 1730 Spanish silver 8 Reales cob. RARE The Vliegenthart(Flying Hart) was one of the Dutch East India Company ships lost on February 3. 1735, after it struck a sand bank off the southern Netherlands coast. None of the 461 sailors, soldiers and merchants on board of Vliegenthart had survived the crash. Although the loss of life was heavy. The ship also had several chests of gold and silver on board(mainly Dutch gold ducats and Spanish colonial pieces of eight from the Mexico mint) for the trade in the East Indies. Search operations and salvage attempts were conducted almost immediately, but besides several cannons and some rigging salvaged in 1736 almost nothing of great value was recovered. Much later. In 1979, Rex Cowen and John Rose in collaboration with the ... moreRijksmuseum in Amsterdam conducted another search which resulted in the wreck’s discovery in 1981. Salvage operations began in 1983 with the work financed by the sale of recovered items. All Vliegenthart artifacts were sold only after examination and cataloging by the Dutch National Museum, the Coin Cabinet in Leyden, Holland. All Vliegenthart artifacts sold were accompanied by Certificates of Authenticity. In the US the Vliegenthart coins were sold by Blanchard; they are very hard to find these days. This set includes original Blanchard brown vinyl“book” with the original Vliegenthart COA. The Treasure Chest of the Vliegenthart” pamphlet, and one silver 8 Reales cob(Spanish Empire Pieces of Eight) minted in Mexico city circa 1720-1730. The cob weights 17.0 grams; it is 35.5 mm at the widest part and about 3.5 mm thick; obviously shows signs of salt water corrosion. Not cleaned or tampered with; these are the actual photos. Struck at the royal mint in Guatemala City during the reign of Spain's King Felipe V(1700-1746) While well worn from circulation, it is rather difficult to find these without holes. The Guatemala mint didn't start striking coins until 1733. In response to a desperate shortage of coinage across Central America, so they all tend to be heavily worn. Calico 250-1459.
