Mangam head crests like this come from the Mama people of northern Nigeria in the Benue River Valley. Mangam mask represents a bush cow with open extended mouth and with marvelously sculpted horns that extend upwards in a continuous single line to be joined at their ends. When worn it is carried on the top of the dancer's head who is surrounded with a ruff of grasses extending from the bottom of the mask that hides the dancer. Mangam masks dance during festivals celebrating funerals and during the yearly agricultural cycle. Mangam masks of this quality and condition rarely come onto the market and this mask or head crest modeled in clay represents a tradition that is rarely seen today. Here we have some awesome handmade bongo type drums. No markings probably made in Mexico or South America. Maybe even Africa. These are in excellent condition with no cracks. The leather skins have a few wear spots but not enough to concern wearing through. All my auctions have 100% positive feedback. Molded clay figures are hollow with a hole on back for hanging. Detailed feathers and facial features are very nicely hand painted. Round mark in the clay on the back reads: MADE IN MEXICO. One is male and the other is a female South American Indian. Both are in very good condition but the male indian has a chip on top of his top feather in the back. Two African Busts TERRA COTTA CLAY HEADS
Uncle Ed had these sitting on his fire place mantel as long as he can remember. I think he moved here in the late 60's. There is a chip or two that reviles that they are made out of some type of clay therefore we are describing them as Terra Cot-ta. I have shown them to two experts that could not give me a value but said they are most likely Nigerian. They are each 24 inches tall with the stand. The heads alone are 18 inches from top to bottom and weigh 6.5 LBS each. The stands are 8 inches tall. One is a male and the other a female. A metal rod is attached to the head to drop into a hole on the top of the stand. There are no markings on the heads. Handmade! Their beautiful faces have interesting detail& great character. The slanted, feathered eyebrows& eyes are painted dramatically. One pair has a red paint design on the forehead. Between the eyebrows, which could indicate Chinese Opera makeup. The faces of the other pair have holes in them. Probably made for inserting fibers, to represent facial hair(these dolls often sported super long, full beards& moustaches) ... moreThe holes at the earlobes are perhaps for earrings. The eye paint is missing on one of these heads, the mouth paint is missing on the other. They seem to be unfinished. I don’t see any glue or leftover“hair” fibers in the holes. Which leads me to think that these heads were factory leftovers, never assembled. Perhaps they were samples or prototypes, or rejects from quality-control. It’s a mystery. These heads are smaller than the other examples I’ve seen. I think they’re all male. Because it seems the females had white faces, instead of natural skin color. I found these at a private family sale in Amsterdam. Netherlands. They appear to be very old. A 1930 photograph, found on line, features this style of head on complete dolls. It states they are antiques, already at that time. We can share the photo, upon request. They’d make a neat display in a curio cabinet. Or someone can use them to complete a doll. CONDITION: They’re a bit dirty. The biggest head has come apart at its central seam. there is chipping of the painted surface along that seam. Up for consideration is this hand crafted of red pottery clay. Moroccan Tam Tam finger/hand drums with sinew/goat skin heads and strappings that stand 6-1/8" tall and are 7-3/4" across center. Individually they measure across heads 3" on the small drum and 4-5/8" on the larger. Not only a musical instrument, is wonderful décor item for African, Moroccan or Middle Eastern décor as well as turn it upside down and use as ball candle holder! These art of making these drums goes back many generations, some have painted decorations on them, with these having no decoration, they go with anything! From an estate I'm listing this week from a family that were missionaries in Shanghai China during the late 20's and early 30's. The lady who recently passed was 95 years old and all these objects were all purchased in Shanghai by her mother and father during those years. I will be listing Jade. Scrolls, Silk garments, Dolls and porcelain this week, along with other objects from different estates. 18th-19th Century Pipe Clay Counting Token For Pipe Makers ROMAN HEADS
These are interesting pipe maker counting tokens. These were used to count pipes when making them in Holland. They date to the 18th to 19th century. They have Roman themes and measure about 1/2" More interesting then a lot of these clay tokens as many were usually just plain. The oofer is just for this one counter token. Straight from Egypt. These drums have a punchy attack and resonate in that sweet way only clay bodies can resonate. These are hand made and brought home from vacation years ago by friends of ours. On offer are two old. Unusual and interesting clay busts/ heads. Depicting an African male and an African female. They are painted in black, brown, white, green and red. They range in height from 1 in. 2.4cm) to 7/8 in. 2.1cm) One is quite crudely made but the two others are more delicately modeled with nicely detailed features. Conditions range from fair to good. Likely cultures are: Photo 2: Tarascan; Photo 3: Toltec; Photo 4: Mixtec or Late Aztec? They are made of fired tan or reddish/tan clay(terracotta) They're decent examples of the tiny ubiquitous terracotta heads that are found all over Middle America! They're from the Joe Magor.
