SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Height: 278 millimeters(11 1/8 inches) Length: 232 millimeters(9 1/3 inches) Breadth: 99 millimeters(4 inches) Base: 150 x 74 millimeters(6 inches x 3 inches) 12 millimeters(1/2 inch) in thickness. CONDITION: Very good. Minor porcelain chips. There are minor chips in the porcelain glaze at the rider’s right front shoulder; to the rider’s waist, behind, center; to the back side of the horse’s right leg; at the edge of the horse’s stomach, right side, center; and at the rider’s left elbow. There is as well a scattering of minute porcelain chips throughout, and the top of the horse’s right ear is also chipped. Other than cleaning, there has been no restoration work. The minor chips could be repaired, without additional cost, if you would like our conservator to repair the chips. There remains some mild soil adhesions, small areas where soil still adheres to the statuette, despite our best efforts to clean away all soil adhesions. Of course the paint has decomposed and is powdery in those areas where the statuette was merely painted(not glazed) the rider’s head, boot, and hands. Precolumbian head from Teotihuacán. Mexico(1) Precolumbian. Sculpted, ceramic head; most likely 500 A.D. or older(That is 1,000 years or more before Cortez invaded Mexico and conquered the Aztecs. The Aztecs, who arrived in the Valley of Mexico long after Teotihuacán was abandoned, named the ruins Teotihuacán- place of the gods. The Aztecs and the Greeks had the same word for gods- teo. 2) Dimensions. approximately 1 inch by 1" by half an inch" I apologize for not providing metric dimensions. I live in a country that clings to ancient English measuring systems instead of the clearly superior and much more functional metric system. 3) Medium. clay. Hard fired under great heat. 4) Provenance. I found this head(and other heads) in a farmer's field near the center of the ruins of Teotihuacán. Near Mexico City, ... morein 1966 or 1967, when I was an anthropology major at the Universidad de las Americas in Mexico City. Generally, these farmers' fields were rocky and dusty but rain would wash the dust off the rocks and reveal that some of them had faces- and were terracotta heads and not rocks. Many times, after a rain, I would take a bus from Mexico City to Teotihuacán, explore the farmers' fields, and look for those features that were not visible when covered with dust. In this way, I acquired dozens of precolumbian heads. How to distinguish an authentic precolumbian sculpture from a fake: 1) provinance; know the source; 2) study precolumbian anthropology; see what's in the museums and the books; 3) lick. Or otherwise wet, the object and see how long it takes to dry; ancient ceramics take a long time to dry because they are more porous than new ceramics. Views of this red head show front and back.

SquareTrade © AP6.0 Here's a decent Pre-Columbian MAYAN CULTURE Style Ceramic HUMAN FIGURE HEAD(ca. 100 BC-400 AD) It's 1 1/4 in. 3.2cm) high(not counting the stand) 1 3/8 in. 3.5cm) wide, 7/8 in. 2.2cm) thick, made if fired reddish/tan clay and in fairly good condition. It features weakly defined eyes, nose and mouth heavily weathered through the ages. It has remanents of earspools and a weakly defined headdress. It's from the Guatemalan lowlands. It is mounted on a lucite stand ready for display! These heads were once on full human clay figures but were broken off and cast into the fields to ensure crop fertility. Pre-Columbian Tumaco La Tolita Ceramic Head Colombia Ecuador
For your Bidding Consideration in this Auction is a Pre-Columbian Ceramic Head from the La Tolita Culture in the Tumaco Region. The region encompassed areas of both Ecuador and Colombia so placing the exact location is normally difficult. The head measures@ 8 1/2" tall and showcases the classic ritually deformed head shape with pierced ears having Ear Spools. A snake is seen protruding from the mouth and wrapped around to the top of the head. There is a hole in the back of the head and both Ear Spools appear to have been repaired at some point(see photos) that is not noticeable from the front and really only noticeable if you turn it around and then upside down. The head rests on a custom made wooden stand which is included in the auction. The right side of the forehead has red paint on the frontal lobe which has faded with time. Please ... morenote. It's 1 3/4 in. 4.3cm) tall. 1 1/8 in. 2.8cm) wide and 3/4 in. 2.0cm) thick. It's very nicely made of fired tan clay(terracotta) and in excellent condition. These ancient terracotta figures were common everyday items in these Middle-American Pre-Columbian cultures. This one has punctate eyes, flat nose and small mouth. It has both earspools, a necklace and a fancy hair style. It was broken from a larger figure thousands of years ago. The fragments were thrown into rivers, sinkholes and fields in the hope of ensuring crop fertility, or as offerings to the gods.
