HUGE Ancient Roman Colosseum Art Architecture Artifacts
Wonders of Man: The Colosseum by Peter Quennell and the Editors of the Newsweek Book Division. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 172 pages. Publisher: Newsweek; 1971) Mock epic sea battles. Grimly realistic wild animal hunts, breathtaking fireworks displays, and at least one midnight séance have been held in the Colosseum since its inauguration in 80 A.D. More than 1,500 years have passed since the last blood, human or animal was shed on the arena’s sands. However during that time the massive amphitheater built by the Flavian emperors has continued to play a major role in Roman history. The Colosseum” vividly recreates that history, depicting the gory gladiatorial games, the martyrdom of early Christians, the successive sacks of Rome by marauding barbarian armies, the desecration and partial dismantling of the arena itself, and ... morefinally its preservation as a world-famous tourist attraction. Here we have the panoramic sweep of the decline and fall of Rome. As viewed from the Eternal City’s most impressive ruin. Some one hundred illustrations, half in full color, provide a stunning visual complement to the narrative. Modern photographs, especially commissioned for this volume, as well as paintings and sketches by famous artists have been juxtaposed with views of classical sculpture and ancient frescoes, coins, and mosaics. A special section. The Colosseum in Literature” includes excerpts from works by such noted authors as Gibbon, Byron, Goethe, Shaw, Dickens, and Longfellow, all of whom were inspired by the vast amphitheatre. A chronology of Roman history, an illustrated guide to the Eternal City’s other celebrated architectural monuments, and a selected bibliography conclude the volume. Author Peter Quennell was an accomplished biographer and social historian. He was Editor of the distinguished British periodical“History Today” And a frequent contributor to“New Statesman” Among his many works that won both critical and popular acclaim both in England and the United States are“The Profane Virtues”

ISLAMIC ART & ANTIQUES IN EARLY OTTOMAN TURKEY TURKISH MUSLIM ARTIFACTS
“Islamic Art in the Mediterranean- Early Ottoman Art. The Legacy of the Emirates Published in Vienna by Electa/Museum With No Frontiers in 2002. DISCUSSION: “Following the history of the Turkish emirates and the arrival of the Ottomans through the legacy of their built art. This book looks at how, during the 14th and 15th centuries, they created a synthesis blending Asian cultural influences with the artistic ideals of western Anatolia and Thrace. These are exemplified by such structures as the Complex of Bayezid II in Edirne and the Great Mosque of Bursa, seen among the book's 197 color photos and 38 maps and plan views. Presented as a"virtual museum exhibit, describing items in their original settings rather than collecting them in a gallery, this book is part of a series from Spain's Museum With No Frontiers, ... morewhich can be read as detailed exhibit catalogs or used as practical guides to the sites they describe. DESCRIPTION: Softcover. 6x8.5. 250 pages, color illustrations. ESKIMO ART Antique Collecting Book CARVINGS DRAWINGS STONECUTS HUNTING ARTIFACTS
ESKIMO ART by Cottie Berland Vintage 1973 Hardcover with dustjacket. 96 pages Color and Black-and-White photographs throughout“Modern Eskimo art is now being widely praised and collected by connoisseurs. Especially soapstone and bone carvings, drawings, stone cuts and prints by leading Canadian artists. The world at large is just beginning to appreciate that the Eskimos are creative artists of considerable talent. Yet, as Cottie Berland, shows in this book, the work of Eskimo artists today is part of an artistic and cultural heritage which goes back thousands of years and links Eskimos right across the arctic world from Greenland to Siberia. Over the centuries Eskimos have carved and engraved the tools of their everyday life with great skill and sensitivity. In the hands of the artist-craftsman ceremonial masks, hunting knives, eye-shades ... moreand even cribbage boards have been transformed into objects of beauty and often of magical significance. For the animals and men which appear in Eskimo art are not simple forms but are the images of a supernatural world where gods and demons are ever present. Being so close to nature Eskimos believe in the unity of all living things and have evolved a folklore which expresses their icy experience of life and death. By understanding their world we can discover the full significance of traditional Eskimo art and can increase our appreciation and enjoyment of Eskimo art now. ANCIENT CYPRIOT ART ARTIFACTS ARTS & ANTIQUES FROM CYPRUS - CESNOLA COLLECTION
Ancient Art from Cyprus. The Cesnola Collection” By Vassos Karageorghis. Published in New York by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2000. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York is home to the largest collection of Cypriot antiquities outside of Cyprus. Largely because of the efforts of the museum's first director, Luigi Palma di Cesnola, who went to Cyprus in 1866 hoping to excavate works to rival the finds of Heinrich Schliemann at Troy. This gorgeously illustrated catalog presents some 500 objects from the prehistoric, Archaic, Classical/Hellenistic, and Roman periods in more than 300 color photographs of glass, stone sculpture, terra-cotta figurines, lamps, pottery, jewelry, and weapons. Here are delicate golden bracelets with lion-head finials, clay jugs decorated with animals ... moreand meticulous geometric motifs, and a four-foot-tall, pencil-thin bronze candelabrum that stands on three hoofed feet" Luigi Palma di Cesnola[1832-1904] Was an Italian-American soldier and amateur archaeologist who received the Medal of Honor during the American Civil War and was the first director of New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art. After the[Civil War] he was appointed United States consul at Larnaca in Cyprus(1865–1877) During his stay on Cyprus he carried out excavations which resulted in the discovery of a large number of antiquities. The collection was purchased by the newly expanded Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and Cesnola became the first director in 1879. He is the author of'Cyprus, its ancient Cities, Tombs and Temples' 1877) a travel book of considerable service to the practical antiquary; and of a'Descriptive Atlas of the Cesnola Collection of Cypriote Antiquities' He died in New York and was interred at Kensico Cemetery in Valhalla, NY. Ancient Celtic Chronicles Art Artifacts Landscapes Relics Ireland Wales Brittany
TRANSLATE Arabic Chinese French German Greek Indonesian Italian Hindi Japanese Korean Swedish Portuguese Russian Spanish Chronicles of The Celts by Iain Zaczek. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover with Dust Jacket: 159 pages. Publisher: Sterling Publishing Company. Inc. 1997) The Celtic world. As it existing in three separate countries with a common spirit and tradition; Ireland, Wales, and Brittany, is brilliantly revealed in these exciting epic chronicles with 120 evocative photographs of artifacts, manuscripts, and landscapes that bring the Celtic world to life as never before. Ireland, land of ancient warriors who value nothing higher than fame and courage as they battle magical forces pitted against them. Ancient warriors whose deeds are as noble and mysterious as the hill forts and standing stones scattered around the landscape. Ancient warriors ... morewhose love of exaggeration and boasting compare with the most extravagant blarney. These are the Celts revealed by the early Irish chronicles. Wales. A land of bands and druids hemmed into a beautiful, mountainous country where King Arthur roamed with his knights. The Welsh warriors saw themselves as defenders of the west, heroes who would one day hurl the foreign oppressors back into the sea. These dramatic chronicles date back to the Middle Ages, but they are truly much older than that. They tell of love and betrayal, of quests and challenges, of supernatural creatures and of murder. Battling dragons. Tyrants, and sorcerers, the warriors of Brittany were people of the sea. Hermits, missionaries, mystics, they passed down their tales of mystery and magic orally through the centuries. They are captured here from a time when the old pagan days were dying out, and the secret, supernatural skeins of the early mystical Celts were quickly attaching themselves to a new religion. CONDITION: New hardcover w/dustjacket. Unblemished except VERY slight edge and corner shelfwear to dustjacket. Pages are pristine; clean. Crisp, unmarked, unmutilated, tightly bound, unambiguously unread.

Inca Treasures Pre Columbian Jalisco pottery, figures artifacts, art, COA
Great pre Columbian seated couple in two figures. This is a wonderful pair seated together with stoic poses. Jalisco couples are rare to fid and great collectors items. I purchased them from Minerva Gallery that sells Pre a Columbian art and other lovely antiquities and they are authentic. They come from an old culture in Western Mexico. I am not sure what could have happened to the man's right shoulder. Possibly he is deformed but likely it represents a style of Jalisco anatomical depiction or it shows the problems with body proportion seen in much Pre Columbian art. Culture: Jalisco. Western Mexico. CA: 100BC to 250AD. Size: male 11 1/2 inches tall. 61/2 inches wide. Female 10 inches tall, 6 inches wide. Big hecouple. Provenance: Minerva Gallery. COA available. Ancient Roman Beads 2 strands of 20 inches, artifacts glass, artifacts art
I am selling 2 strands of Ancient Roman glass beads that I guarantee are authentic or I will gladly take them back. They were purchased from an online seller of Roman items and they are classic design and shape of the glass beads found along the"Old Silk Road" Often collectors rummaged the dumps of villages throughout the regions occupied by the expanding Roman empire and the trade routes from Europe across Afghanistan to China and would find lots of loose glass beads. Romans loved the glass colored beads and it was often a sign of status to have glass beads. as it is today to have nice jewelry) Each strand of beads themselves are about 20 inches long. Interesting and widely collected Roman beads for the collector. See pictures and ask questions. See my other Pre Columbian artifacts. Trench art and unique items. Ancient Roman lot bronze Military artifacts, antiquities fibulas pendants art
This is a really nice large collection lot of Bronze Roman artifacts I purchased on line at different times. They appear to have rusted patina. As with many small bronze items purchased from overseas sellers I cannot guarantee that they are absolutely authentic since there have been imitations made and I do not have any certificates of authenticity. I am not an expert on rust patterns. They have come from different sellers. In any event they appear real but if not. The replications represent the shapes and designs used by soldiers and by other people as well. There are phallic pendant type items, buckles, clasps, fibulas and pendants. View the list before buying and ask questions. It represents a nice collection of artifacts from the Roman period when it was spread across Europe and the Middle east, often found along the Old Silk Road. Some ... moresellers have commented that it is hard to farm land without unearthing a lot of bronze items that have lain around for years. The main photo shows the entire lot. CA: 200 BC-250AD. Size: averaging 1-1 1/2 inches across. I have priced them lower than my collective price for each to sell the entire lot and in the event some may not be authentic so they are priced for their aesthetic value. They could be used as center pieces for making jewelry and other collectibles for the artistically inclined. See my other Pre Columbian artifacts. Trench art and unique items. Inca Treasures LTD.
Inca Treasures LTD 19 Pre Columbian pottery spindle beads artifacts vessel art
This is a wonderful set of nineteen Pre Columbian pottery stone artifact beads strung together. Seventeen are on the tie and 2 smaller whorl beads are free from another collection giving 19 beads. They are from Western Mexico but the two conical shaped are likely Peru beads. They have great patterns. Color and deep decorations on them. Great pieces for making more ornate necklaces or just to enjoy. Spindle or whorl beads were used on spindle sticks to enhance the spinning speed of making yarn out of the alpaca wool. They may have been used decoratively for other purposes. Stones like these are still often used in the Andean mountain villages or small Mexican villages where the Indigenous people still make their own yarns. I have seen them doing this in Cotacachi. Ecuador, for example. Exceptionally nice size and detail for bead collection ... moreand a great set for the collector of Pre Columbian pottery art and necklaces. Culture: Western Mexico culture. Size: average is 1inch to 1 1/2 inches with some smaller. CA: 100BC-250AD. Provenance: purchased from an online collector's collection. Authenticity with lifetime guarantee by Inca Treasures LTD.
