139 YEAR OLD MOTHER OF PEARL Antique mini purse labeled HORTICULTURAL HALL PHILADELPHIA 1876. Size 2 1/2 inches by 2( wide) condition; some of the image was been worn off but the clasp. Inside and back are perfect. Philadelphia’s Centennial Exhibition in 1876 was one of the first world’s fairs in the United States. The beautifully grand Horticultural Hall. Depicted in this pearl mini purse was a momento, which was just one part of the great exhibition, which featured art. Manufactured goods, agricultural goods, and much more. The hall featured a model of a Victorian garden, and though it was the smallest of the five main buildings, it drew great crowds. The hall was wildly colorful, not just because of the flora but also for the intricate tile and marble work and two large blue-marble staircases. The hall was built on a hill that offered ... moresweeping views of both the city and the country and was one of the few Centennial constructions intended to remain a permanent part of Fairmount Park. However. The building was destroyed by a hurricane in 1954. In 1976, a Horticultural Center was built atop the site of the hall as part of the Bicentennial Celebration. Though the Bicentennial event was not nearly as successful as the Centennial Celebration, the center still stands in Fairmount Park as a part of West Park Garden and is open to all. The Gold Leaf lettering is in excellent condition and says C.M. Dodge 1876. 1876 was the Centennial Celebration year of our great country. USA! The embroidered flowers have a soft palette of lilacs, browns and greens which is very detailed. The outside leather is a oxblood color while the inside leather is a soft tan color. The latch still opens and closes easily. This seems like a very special gift for someone that was well loved. There is some patina noted but I will leave any cleaning up to the new owner.
