Pieces like this one with jaguar heads have been found in elaborate graves. They have a function in a ritual involving food or drink or the burning of incense. Likely possessed by a chief. Ceramics found in residential areas, presumably for everyday use, are much simpler and sturdier. The Chorotega was the most powerful American Indian tribe of northwest Costa Rica at the time of the Spanish conquest. The Chorotega were corn farmers. Had markets and a semidemocratic social structure in which chiefs were elected, and carried on frequent warfare with neighbouring peoples. I collected precolumbian sculpture from 1965 through 1967 in Mexico when I was a teenager and- from 1966 through'67- an anthropology student at the Universidad de las Americas in Mexico City. I did not find this one myself. I bought it in a Mexican archaeological zone(when it was legal to do so) I don't have a specific recollection of where this is from. EVERY precolumbian Mexican culture worshiped the Old Fire God. How to distinguish an authentic precolumbian sculpture from a fake: a) provinance; know the source; b) study precolumbian anthropology; see what's in the museums and the books; c) lick. It is 9cm hight. 4.5cm wide to the widest part at the edge, 1.7cm thick, made of calcite, light blue in color, no chips, there was a hairline crack near the right eye throught the hole but was filled with some white color substance(I think that was lime stone) after long time of burial. The whole item is covered with some tinny crystals that can't removed. It is a hard item to find in this conditions and compare to those asking for thousands. This is a ancient handmade pottery bowl with designs that are clearer on the bottom sides than the top. I was told it was found in south Texas amongst the rouble of a old rock stacked building partially covered in dusty dirt near the Rio Grande River. It looks older than what the eastern settlers were bringing in with them so I would sermise that it is of Indian make& use. There are a few white areas on the rim that look to have been broken off at some time before I bought it. Take a look at the photo's for a more accurate description. Lots of wear and weathering is visible. Nose is large and pointed with good definition. Mayan and the demon/deity is Tlaloc the rain god. Who demanded the tears of children. The Mayan priests tore the children's fingernails out to make them cry, then drowned them in a well. Las Muñecas Antiguas~ Chancay Peruvian Mummy Dolls ~ Funerary Burial Dolls This is a exceptionally nice PreColumbian CHANCAY funerary textile cloth doll. It was made in Peru in the 1920's-40's out of ancient textiles from pre-Columbian burial cloth. The doll has a brown dress with a gold lace apron. She has long braids and a blue and cream band on her forehead. Her facial features are red and black yarn. This doll has been protected by being encased in a lucite box frame that is ready to either display on a shelf or. If desired, it can be hung on the wall or if preferred it is very easy to remove from the case with two screws. This is a very well made and heavy case. The doll is 9" x 3" The lucite case is 12" x 5" x 3" deep. They are both in excellent condition. The Chancay doll represents a blurring ... moreof the line between the past and the present. Indigenous Peruvian artisans recreate Chancay dolls(named after the Chancay culture that inhabited the central coast of Peru ca. AD 1000- 1476) in the old style using ancient fabrics. It is not unusual for these dolls to combine fabrics that originated at various locations along the coastal Peru- from the North Coast to the South Coast. And that are separated in time by thousands of years. It is not known whether Chancay dolls were made specifically to be placed in tombs as funerary offerings. Or if they represent possessions from life that were buried with their owners. Among pre-Columbian Peruvians. The custom of including articles that were important to the deceased was a common burial tradition. Discovered with many interments are tool kits used by spinners and weavers, fishing kits, weapons, and other objects. The relationship of the deceased and these practical funerary goods is obvious. These accoutrements of daily life, as well as superb weavings, jewelry, and other personal treasures, were believed to have utility in a hereafter. ANCIENT CLAY VESSEL WITH EMBOSSED FIGURE IN VARIOUS ACTIVITIES. EXTENSIVELY REPAIRED AND DAMAGED You are bidding on an ancient pottery vessel. Origin unknown, with a rounded handle and spout and a human figure holding a spear and other objects in panels around the middle of the vessel. It is slightly rounded on the bottom and probably intended to store or carry water or other liquids. The vessel is extensively repaired and glued with one shard still missing from one side and large chips from the rim. The pot is about 11-1/2" tall and 8" in diameter. While the pot is fragile because of the cracks and repairs, it has probably been in that condition for hundreds of years and I think will ship safely with proper packing.
