Tang Dynasty, 8th or 9th Century A.D. Possibly a Ming Dynasty or 18th or 19th Century Qing Dynasty Revival Imitative. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Height: 151 millimeters(6 inches) Breadth: 81 millimeters(3 1/4 inches) Thickness: 82 millimeters(3 3/8 inches) CONDITION: Very good. No repairs but the majority of glaze is gone. A little wear and a few blemishes consistent with any decorative item which was buried for over one thousand years. Not flawless, but certainly in a better than average state of preservation– and unrepaired! Stands on its own. DETAIL: A nicely preserved clay statuette so wonderfully characteristic of Tang Dynasty statuary. Sancai. Or three-color glazes principally in yellow, green and brown was a development of the Tang Dynasty(618-907 AD) Sancai(three-colored" wares were first made for burial, using lead-based glazes that produced mottled and streaky effects in green, amber-brown, and cream, with an occasional addition of blue or black. The production of such exquisite porcelain items required multiple firings of fine white clay at temperatures near 1000c(1800f) degrees. A wide variety of statuettes were commonly produced such as musicians, chamberlains(butlers) maids, cooks, even animals; all designed to serve their deceased master. In early Tang dynasty. Production of sancai pottery figurines dominated the pottery scene, and their production continued well into the Ming era which advanced the art with more intense colors and finer porcelain clay. The pottery and porcelain figures produced from the Tang all the way through the Ming Dynasties are famous even until today for their beautiful multicolored glazes occu

Patojo Pot from Ometepe Island. Nicaragua-Nicaro Culture 800-1200 A.D Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE This is a rare"patojo" pot from Ometepe Island. Nicaragua and made around 1000 years ago by the Nicaro culture(a branch of the Greater Nicoya Culture) Ometepe Island is located in Lake Nicaragua and it's name means two volcanoes. This is an interesting and rare piece of pre-Columbian pottery that it is decorated in the form of a guinea pig with eyes on either side and a snout at the tip of the pot. A"patojo" pot is called this because it is commonly made in the shape of a shoe, which is pronounced"patojo" in Spanish. These were made by pre-Columbian cultures all over the Americas and the reason for this is that these pots allowed the user to dip into the warm contents from the pot while the ... moreelongated end of the pot rested in a classic"comal" style oven. This anthropomorphic vessel has marks that represent the hair on the animal and that change at the tip to fit the face of the creature. This pot measures 6 3/4" X 4 3/4" with a height of 4" and the mouth of this pot is 3" wide. This piece has only got ships to the flared rim which still has red pigment on the top and seems to have black pigment on the underside. The flat style pendant has a suspension hole on each side of the back that pierces the back near the corners and comes out through the narrow sides(so the suspension holes cannot be seen from the front) The holes are at the bottom sides of the bird. There are three beads, one is a flat stylized jaguar head with very tiny holes for stringing, the second is a jaguar head carved in the round with pronounced ears and snout with a normal sized stringing hole through the top down, the third bead is more like a stylized bird figure( with head showing eye depressions and tail opposite. This pottery fragment shows a face with arms reaching up to the mouth. This head. Possibly wearing a hat, is from the lug of a larger piece of pottery. It is glued onto a piece of wood and labeled in Spanish by a collector from Puerto Rico. This is good example of Taino artistry and is already mounted for display. Authenticity guaranteed. Pre Columbian Costa Rica Diquis culture Tripod Jaguar Vessel Pot 800 -1520 AD
Hi! Up for auction is an ancient Costa Rican Diquis culture Tripod Jaguar vessel from the Chortega-Chocolate Guanacaste region. It’s dated 800 to 1100 AD on the original provenance(see picture) but I believe it could be later from 1000 to 1520 AD. This vessel could possibly be a Buenos Aires polychrome variant from the Diquis culture. Greater Chiriqui Period VI. From the pictures. This tripod is a beautiful vessel! The deep red color is really strong. The two glyphs on the sides are delightful and artistically executed! Each glyph represents an abstract jaguar and I don’t believe is written language. However, the showstopper is the adorable Jaguar head! What’s great is the jaguar head is actually a rattle! Provenance: This vessel is from the ex-Cotton Mather collection in Phoenix. AZ, USA. In the early 1970s, he imported it with a Costa Rican ... moregovernment permit before imports were prohibited. Therefore, this vessel is perfectly legal to buy and sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600. CHAPTER 14. As for the condition: This vessel has its condition issues. Even though the beautiful Jaguar head is perfect and still intact. The Jaguar’s tail is missing and has been since Pre-Columbian times. You can tell by the way the ageing is on it. What’s strange is how perfectly clean the missing tail was removed from the vessel. Right above the missing tail, there is a significant clip on the rim. Based on a top view of the vessel, the rim chip and the missing tail line up indicating the tail could have been ritually broken off on purpose and the rim was chipped in the process. As seen in the pics, there is a small hole on the back right side and the back tripod foot broke off but was re-attached. On closer inspection, the paint is in great condition but is slowly micro age cracking all over the vessel for over the thousands of years. This age cracking typically occurs from this region. Ancient Peru, Moche ovoid pottery jar or bottle 200 to 800 AD antiquities
A Moche/possibly early Chimu ovoid jar with a mold face. Pierced ears and a decorated area of some kind of creature with sharp teeth. Ribbons out of mouth would seem to indicate a religious significance for the pot. It is seven inches tall, six inches across at longest side and four inches deep. Semi rounded bottom. This appears to be intact. It would probably date fairly late in the Moche period, possibly 600 to 800 AD. This is from an old collection. Provenance will be provided to the buyer. The Moche people were primarily a coastal agricultural group with a very strong artistic approach to all aspects of life. They are most famous for their beautiful jewelry, ornamentation and very illustrative pottery. This very unusual piece is thick and heavy hammered copper or copper-alloy in the shape of a large thrusting parrot head with an elongated rear section which has a hole in the end. There is a small green turquoise bead representing an eye on one side only. The condition is mostly good, showing the typical mottled green oxidation that appears on ancient copper from this region, about 38 mm or 1-1/2 ... moreinches at the widest point, 3 mm in thickness, and a long 122 mm or about 4-3/4 inches in length from beak to the rear-end. A copper mortuary figure of a warrior from the Moche culture of ancient Peru. Ca. 100- 800 AD. The figure with a heavy verdigris and earthen patina is in a sitting position, he holds a shield in his right hand and a tumi head axe in his left. He wears a necklace of round beads, and circular earspools both having corrosion losses. SquareTrade © AP6.0 Here's a very nice highly decorated CLAY SPINDLE WHORL of the MANABI/MANTENO CULTURE(ca; 800-1500 AD) found in the central coastal area of western Ecuador. It's tiny. Only 1/2 in. 1.3cm) tall and 9/16 in. 1.4cm) in diameter. It's made of fired dark gray clay(terracotta) that has been decorated with a deeply engraved zig-zag pattern of triangles and circles. This is a very beautiful tiny work of ancient art! It's in superb condition considering age and use. These whorls were once affixed to long wooden shafts and were used as flywheels in the spinning of yarn or thread to produce clothing. Each owner(maker) had her own style of art on her whorls. With most important social activities documented in pottery, including war,metalwork, weaving and sex. Traditional north coast Peruvian ceramic art uses a limited palette. Relying primarily on red and white; fineline painting, fully modeled clay, veristic figures, and stirrup spouts. Moche ceramics created between 150–800 AD epitomize this style. Moche pots have been found not just at major north coast archaeological sites, such as Huaca de la luna, Huaca del sol, and Sipan, but also at small villages and unrecorded burial sites as well.
