A Moche Stirrup-spout bottle depicting two marine creatures facing each other. With snails marching above them. Circa 300-700 AD. Measuring 8“ high x 5 ½“ Diameter Approx. Throughout Moche history. This creatures were portrayed in a wide range of complex scenes, such as combats with supernatural creatures. There is some lost of paint and chips along the piece as expected for its age. But you can definitively appreciate the craftsmanship of the ancient artist. I purchased this piece from a dealer in an antique show in Miami. FL in 2005, who claimed acquiring the piece in 1956 on one of his travels to Central America. The Moche civilization flourished in northern Peru from 100 AD to 800 AD. Many scholars contend that the Moche were likely a group of autonomous polities that shared a common elite culture. Stirrup-spout bottles were the privileged ceramic medium used by Moche artists in the expression of complex ideological messages. Moche slip-painted vessels were typically bichrome. With red decoration on white/cream background. This bottle dates from the Moche apogee period(300–700) during which the fineline painting tradition was used to create a great diversity of narrative scenes. Moche society was agriculturally based. And their artifacts express their lives, with detailed scenes of hunting, fishing, fighting, sacrifice, sexual encounters and elaborate ceremonies. A pre-Columbian Lambayeque-Chimu culture double spout vessel. Dating to 700– 1200 AD. This footed vessel has three sharply divided sections; a ring base. Body with a sharp ridge at the shoulder and two long, tapered spouts with an arched bridge handle. Beautiful painted decoration covers the majority of the tan slip. At first glance this exuberant vessel might appear to be decorated with simple scenes from the natural world. Yet look closer and it is in fact telling a story of the supernatural. A tale of immortality that was popular long before the Spanish arrived on the shores of South America. A story passed down through countless generations, it shows the legend of Naymlap, the fearless founder of a centuries old dynasty that ruled the Lambayeque Valley. Naymlap was a mysterious lord who arrived from the north with a vast fleet of totora ... morerafts carrying a huge entourage that included his chief wife. His personal guard of forty warriors and an embroider of his feathered shirts. Having come to shore at the mouth of a great river, the group walked inland and founded a settlement which came to dominate the surrounding lands. Throughout his long reign, the people enjoyed peace and prosperity. So popular was Naymlap that when his death finally came, it was kept secret by his attendants who feared the repercussions and they buried him in the same room where he had lived. To explain his mysterious disappearance, they claimed the revered old man had evaded death by learning to fly and gliding up to the heavens for an immortal existence. This theme is encapsulated in on the vessel. We see Naymlap riding atop the crest of a rainbow symbolising ritual flight and flanked by two attendants. He wears the crown and projecting ear ornamentation one associates with Lambayeque nobility. Meanwhile the row of birds running along the shoulder is likely an allegory of the heros flight into heaven. Published Pre Columbian Chimu Pottery Spouted Bottle - 700 AD
A superb. Well provenanced, published ancient Pre-Columbian ritual libation vessel, from the Chimu culture, dating to 700- 1470 A.D. A fascinating ancient vessel of ovoid form. Surmounted by two tapered spouts. The piece decorated on its shoulders with moulded depictions of animals and whorls on a dotted or stippled ground. Plant forms, perhaps maize or pacae leaves lie around the neck. This piece was once thought to be a product of the Patavilca. However similar shaped vessels with designs of this type have been excavated in the Moche River Valley and are now known to date to the Middle Chimu period. The Chimú are perhaps best known for their distinctive black glazed pottery. Strongly influenced by their predecessors, the Moche. Examples of their enchanting ceramics can be found on display in the world's top museums. Pre-Columbian HEAD Vessel Moche PERU Dig Guaranteed Authentic approx. 700 AD Recently I was able to obtain several pieces of authentic pre-Columbian pottery and artifacts from ancient civilizations including the Mayan. Incan, Nazca, Aztec, and Central American cultures, all from one individual’s upscale collection. Up for auction is this very cool Vessel. It is a fat rotund HEAD Vessel attributed to the Moche Civilization during the late classic period. 700AD-850AD. It came from a pre WWII dig and has been off the market until now. The piece shows a head at the top in a very strange expression. Almost like he is in pain. He has a very flat head and piercing eyes his mouth is either smirking or showing stress. His ears pop out the sides of his head. There is a tiny hole in the neck and it looks like a tracheotomy to me, maybe that’s why he ... moreis in pain? In his belly is a wide mouth to fill the vessel with water or blood or whatever this was used for. The front is all red and the reverse seems white, but it could just be the dirt that has adhered to the surface causing the whitish look. The piece is bulbous and measures 9” TALL and is about 7” at its widest. It is unusually lightweight and the walls are thin. The vessel is delicate. The bottom is shaped like a football and it is not meant to stand upright. There are surface stains and some very minor surface spotting. This is an extremely old piece and quite interesting and BIG piece. The dating. Attribution of culture and historical references came from meticulous research from the original collector via a very reputable auction house in St Augustine Florida. Pre-Columbian Moche Effigy Pottery Jar, circa 100 AD-700 AD
Up for auction we have a wonderful piece of Pre-Columbian Peruvian pottery. Beautiful Moche figural effigy jar that show two figures holding a bound nude male prisoner. Stirrup spout handle protrudes from the back of this orange-ware vessel. Incised raised features. Tan slip on body and reddish/brown slip on figures and handle. A very elegant and unique piece of ancient pottery. Size: 7-3/4" Tall and 4-1/2" at its widest. Culture: Moche. Peru Circa: 100AD-700AD Some very slight surface wear and paint loss as to be expected of pieces this old. Small stress crack on face of large figure(see picture#5) Complete and in great museum condition. This displays really well. And some information found on the Long Island University Museum site: Stirrup Spout Vessels were the predominant ceramic form throughout the Pre-Columbian Peruvian region ... morefrom the earliest cultures beginning around 1000 BCE until the conquest of the Inca in the 15th century. Stirrup spout vessels comprise an enormous array of styles and designs but have the common characteristic of a stirrup. Or handle, and a spout. The handle, placed on top of a variety of bases that range from the simplest globular shape to elaborate portraits, could be vertical or horizontal. The spout(or spouts) were either attached to the handle or placed just behind it. They were both hand made and mould-made. Some were elaborately crafted, others were mass-produced. The vast majority of extant stirrup spout vessels have been found in burial sites scattered throughout the Andes. Scholars believe that some vessels were used only for burial purposes, while others were used for rituals and ceremonies. Still others, as indicated by the wear and tear are believed to have utilitarian purposes such as for carrying water or other liquids. SquareTrade © AP6.0 Here's a tiny Aztec ZOLAPAN STYLE CLAY FIGURE HEAD. Ca: 700- 1000 AD found many years ago near the Teotihuacan Pyramids in Mexico's Central Highlands. It is 7/8 in. 2.1cm) tall. 3/4 in. 1.9cm) wide and 11/16 in. 1.7cm) thick. This appears to be a modeled figure having carefully made delicate incised eyes and modeled nose and mouth. Zolapan figures were almost always devoid of headdresses and earspools, as is this one. It's nicely made of fired gray clay(terracotta) and in excellent condition. He's a very tiny example of Zolapan Phase head associated with the late stages of the Aztec Culture. It's one of the smallest Zolapan Style heads I've ever sold! SquareTrade © AP6.0 Here's a nice. Rare Mayan"SUN DISC" ca: 300-700 AD found many years ago near Lake Atitlan in Guatemala. It is 1 1/8 in. 2.8cm) in diameter. 3/16 in. 5cm) thick, made of glossy black obsidian and in perfect condition. It was chipped into a disc shape from a flat obsidian flake removed from a large core. It's not known exactly what these discs were for but a common belief is that they were some sort of religious symbol representing the sun. Other theories suggest they were just pieces used in some sort of game. It's from the Joe Magor, Chicago, IL, collection, collected in the 1960's.
