This incredibly heft granite artifact came from 19th century field plowing north of Padducah. Kentucky near the Ohio River. I acquired this and many other stone artifacts on a cross country trip. The maul-club is heavily pitted. Shows extensive percussive use on both ends and has an extreme mid-center groove. This type of stone would be fixed to a long wooded handle by fixing the grooved area upwards within rawhide-the flattened"bottom" would rest on the wooded handle top. The entire stone would be wrapped with fresh ligaments. Using the fibrous animal muscle ends as a type of rope. Careful wetting and drying eventually would ... moremake for a very firm stone capable of bashing heads in any fight. Pitting. Compression end fractures. The clean edges of the groove is due to the above construct: according to the latter-day owner. The maul was originally encased in thick multiples layers of decomposing rawhide/gut atop what was clearly a long handle-branch. A wonderfully intriguing stone maul-head that has clearly seen action. Up for auction is a large 7-1/2" long by 5" tall by 3/4" wide Granite Axe that does have a ding on one corner and some slight dings on the bit as well as disk marks on it. I tried to take many pictures of this piece showing the wear and damage though slight as it is. A fine piece. This axe weighs 6 pounds and was found in Fayette County. Ohio. Northwestern Chihuahua, Mexico, in the river basin.This implement was manufactured, possibly, to cut wooden beams and to aid in general construction, a well-made piece. Carved in hard-gray stone with extra-wide shallow groove, angular poll, three-quarter grooved design, one flat side. Very good condition. Smooth surface, age wear, unfortunately the other end is broken off in antiquity as sign of heave use. Size: 4" long x 2 1/2" wide x 2" thick with over 1" wide ridged groove.

It's a compact, close grained stone with one chip on the bit edge, as shown. The original owner identified the origin of many the pieces and this is identified as coming from Missouri. I know nothing about types of stones or Artifacts. What I do know is this item appears to me to be an Ancient Artifact 3/4 Grooved Stone Axe Head. I found this on the bank of the Potomac River opposite Washington. D.C. when I lived there in the 1980’s. It measures 5 1/4 by 3 1/2 inches and weighs 1 3/4 pounds. But feels heavier. Authentic Indian Artifact, Exceptional 3/4 Grooved Archaic Axe
This axe was found in Marion County. Illinois. It has an age crack along one side of the poll and a couple of minor dings. The bit has a couple of tiny chiggers and the butt is perfect. Very good patina and age wear that enhances this relic's artistic value. Probably from the late Archaic Age and made of porphyry this piece is 4 7/8" long and 3 3/16" wide. This axe also comes with a 30 day return policy no questions asked. If you decide to take advantage of the policy just email me and it will be arranged.
