Nayarit Culture. 250 BC to 200 AD. SIZE: Height- 8.25" 12 cm) Width- 4.5" 11.5 cm) Depth- 3.5" 9 cm) An anthropomorphic male sitting figure. Leaning forward with his left hand holding an object in, or up to his mouth. His right hand is on his right knee. The figure has foreshortened legs, long curving arms of unequal length, a flattened face with a proportionate nose and coffee bean eyes. He is wearing multiple ear spools. This figure's head. Body, and legs are hollow and there is a large round opening at the top of his head, making the piece into a vessel as well as a figure. The figure's hair is cut into bangs across the forehead and the details ... moreof the hair were inscribed into the clay before firing. The neckline also has dimension and is raised up from the body. Depicting the figure to be wearing clothing. The surface of the figure is of the red burnished- polished clay and there are remnants of white and possibly black slip pigments painted on the face. There may have been yellowish designs on the chest. As well, but if so they hardly visible now. The surface shows dark dimensional manganese deposits in many areas. And some light encrustations of dirt and other substances in the crevices. This piece is between 1.800 and 2,250 years old. It was collected during the 1940's and was obtained from an old San Francisco collection. Condition: This piece is in good excavated condition with no losses. The following is noted: A tight. Stable, very thin hairline extending from the front of the figure's throat, over his right shoulder, to the back of his neck. It appears that there is a very old repair where the upper left part of the head has been glued back after a separation. A line showing this runs under his left eye, up the forehead and hair and down the back of his head and over the left ear(please see photos

Ancient Peru, Moche ovoid pottery jar or bottle 200 to 800 AD antiquities
A Moche/possibly early Chimu ovoid jar with a mold face. Pierced ears and a decorated area of some kind of creature with sharp teeth. Ribbons out of mouth would seem to indicate a religious significance for the pot. It is seven inches tall, six inches across at longest side and four inches deep. Semi rounded bottom. This appears to be intact. It would probably date fairly late in the Moche period, possibly 600 to 800 AD. This is from an old collection. Provenance will be provided to the buyer. In spite of being from an old collection, sale outside the United States would be problematic. Therefore I will only accept bids from the US. Effigy Vessel approximately 6 1/8" x 4 3/4" x 8 3/8" h Offered is a Pre-Columbian effigy vessel of the Moche IV era with an acrylic display stand. Its surface is irregular where the pottery has been scraped. Such as the figure's nose, and there is a chip to the top edge on the reverse. The most significant flaw is a small hole through the wall. Rare Pre-Columbian Wheeled Jaguar Effigy- Toy Vera Cruz- Mayan Classic to Late Post-Classic Period 250 AD-1200 AD ~ please scroll down for more photos and information ~ SIZE: Length- 4 1/2” 11 cm) Width- 2 1/4” 5.5 cm) Height- 2 5/8” 6.5 cm) DESCRIPTION: Very rare Pre-Columbian ceramic toy or effigy with four wheels in the form of a Jaguar. Late Classic or Post-Classic Mayan or Vera Cruz Culture- Circa 250 AD- 1200 AD. El Salvador or Mexico. A number of these wheeled pieces are known and are thought to date from the Classic to Late Post-Classic Mayan Period(250 AD- 1200 AD) Various attributions for similar objects are to the Olmec. Mayan, Toltec, and Vera Cruz cultures, so maybe they were made by a number of cultures. It seems that it is not known whether these wheeled pieces were made as children’s toys, ceremonial effigies, or had some ... moreother purpose. Probably ceremonial, possibly burial pieces. This piece is hand-made and has all four wheels. It is in the form of a jaguar. With a long tail, upright ears, a detailed face and an open mouth. The piece appears to have four original wheels, but the axles(sticks) have been replaced since the original wood would long ago have deteriorated. There are traces of red paint on the face. The surfaces show. In addition to some traces of paint, darkening, light encrustation, old wear to the rolling surfaces of the wheels, and an overall aged darkened patina. There are several archeological or collection markings to the underside of the jaguar. As you can see in the photographs. This piece was purchased at a Butterfield and Butterfield auction in San Francisco about 20 years ago and was part of an old collection being sold. I bought it from the purchaser shortly after he obtained it from the auction house. It has been in my own collection since 1994. Evidence of the slipware glaze decoration is all over the piece. Especially on one side, where color concentric circles can be seen. The lip of the opening in the top has some wear and a little loss, but no repairs are evident. This is a particularly attractive piece of ancient. Pre-Columbian Mexico pottery; from the estate of a Connecticut collector who passed away, purchased at auction around 2007. The Colima dogs were a breed used for sacrifice and were also part of the diet. Vessels like this were used in burials, as that is where most of them were discovered. It's 1 3/4 in. 4.3cm) tall. 1 1/8 in. 2.8cm) wide and 3/4 in. 2.0cm) thick. It's very nicely made of fired tan clay(terracotta) and in excellent condition. These ancient terracotta figures were common everyday items in these Middle-American Pre-Columbian cultures. This one has punctate eyes, flat nose and small mouth. It has both earspools, a necklace and a fancy hair style. It was broken from a larger figure thousands of years ago. The fragments were thrown into rivers, sinkholes and fields in the hope of ensuring crop fertility, or as offerings to the gods.
