TAINO CELT-AXE: CEREMONIAL; HIGHLY POLISHED. 19th CENTURY PUERTO RICO Length: 8" Width: 2 1/2" Thick: 1 1/2" Weight: 1 lb 12 oz This amazingly polished/shaped CELT- axe was uncovered in 19th century Puerto Rico during field clearance. Kept over the years by the landowners descendants-who migrated to New York City- this outstanding artifact was found in a field outside the southern town of Coamo. Just off the current PR-556 roadway. The area around Coamo was a hot-bed of Taino activity(900 to 1500 AD) before the war-like Arawaks and Columbus messed things up. Farmers continue to pull out undocumented artifacts from that seemingly gentle. Peaceful people, who appeared to have a lot of time to make rather interesting personal stone tools/items. 19th Century military"Cutacha" used by the Spanish Army in Cuba. An entity in its right. Other edged tool-weapons were used in metropolitan Spain and in Africa for similar purposes. Most likely because of the condition of the sword, it has been used and the edge is still sharp. The tip is a little worn. The no. is the stock number and a makers mark. The pommel is the head of an eagle. Cutachas were carried more as a symbol of office than as a weapon and were in civil life used by planters and overseers to whack surly peasants with. Thus the chisel edge which would cut just bruise. Actually the side of the blade was used by police to whack miscreants. Intended to be hurtful but non-lethal. Killing peasants is like killing slaves. Not only inhumane but bad economics. After all a good slave in the old south cost $500 which was a goodly ... moresum in those days. 19th Century Native-Carved Brazil Nut Pod- South America Rain Forest Souvenir. Approx 4 X 3.5 inches. This type of carving work is typical of pieces produced by sailors on their voyages from approx the 1850's to the 1890's The outer husk and shell case has been hand turned and cut to reveal the inner brazil nuts. Today we are offering a beautiful burred walnut tantalus containing 3crystal decanters. 1 aperitif glass and one crystal tumbler.There is a chip on the lip of one decanter. Each decanter has a silver tag denoting whiskey, sherry and madeira. The box is in excellent condition. This is a late 19th century French bronze. It depicts a boy carrying his victorious rooster. The detail is very fine and has it's original patina. It is not signed but I believe it is by French sculptor Jules Coutan. He stands 18 inches tall including the base. He weighs 8 pounds. California bidders must pay sales tax. For sale is a rare example of early American(specifically New Hampshire) stoneware pottery from Jeremiah Burpee. The jar has a 2.5 pint capacity. And is in fantastic condition. With it's unique colour, pearlescence(due to age) and incised patterns, this is a superb example of early American folk pottery.
