Rare Pre Columbian "Patojo" Pot - Ometepe Island, Nicaragua, c.800 AD - 1200 AD
Patojo Pot from Ometepe Island. Nicaragua-Nicaro Culture 800-1200 A.D Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE This is a rare"patojo" pot from Ometepe Island. Nicaragua and made around 1000 years ago by the Nicaro culture(a branch of the Greater Nicoya Culture) Ometepe Island is located in Lake Nicaragua and it's name means two volcanoes. This is an interesting and rare piece of pre-Columbian pottery that it is decorated in the form of a guinea pig with eyes on either side and a snout at the tip of the pot. A"patojo" pot is called this because it is commonly made in the shape of a shoe, which is pronounced"patojo" in Spanish. These were made by pre-Columbian cultures all over the Americas and the reason for this is that these pots allowed the user to dip into the warm contents from the pot while the ... moreelongated end of the pot rested in a classic"comal" style oven. This anthropomorphic vessel has marks that represent the hair on the animal and that change at the tip to fit the face of the creature. This pot measures 6 3/4" X 4 3/4" with a height of 4" and the mouth of this pot is 3" wide. This piece has only got ships to the flared rim which still has red pigment on the top and seems to have black pigment on the underside. On the bottom of this piece the hash marks stop and on it are a collector's numbers. International buyers pay full cost of shipping. Whatever that might be. Please see my other auctions for more artifacts. Thanks for Looking!

Chiriquí Greyware Trippod "Fish Pot" ~ Pre-Columbian Panama ~ c.1200 AD - Nice!
Chiriquí Grey"Fish Pot" Panama, c.1200 AD These tripod pots are typical of Chiriquí pottery. Found in what is today Panama. Tis style of pottery has been referred to as"fish pots" because the of the shape of the legs, which are stylized to look like fish with fins out from their sides. This pot has a flared lip that has a flat top above where lip angles into the bowl. On the outside of the bowl there are two handles made of entwined cords of clay and below the outside lip there is a flat space where this pot might have had a cord of some sort going round it and through the handles. ... moreThis pot stands fine and yet at very slight angle to one side. This is a fie pot for display and for study and would make a good addition to any collection of fine antiquities. This pot measures 6" high X 6" maximum diameter. Ancient Pre - Columbian Chancay Culture Pottery Llama Vessel - 1200 AD
A published and exhibited pre-Columbian(Chancay culture) earthenware figure in the form of a llama. Dating to 1000- 1435 A.D. This hollow figure of a llama stands on four stubby legs. Antiquity Panama, Chiriqui Biscuitware 1200=1400 AD Small olla with repairs
A plain l Olla in the biscuitware(unpainted and unglazed) of Chiriquí province of Panama. The neck is decorated with small incised bits of clay possibly meant to be beans. On each side are frogs reminiscent in shape to some of the gold pieces from Panama. One is large and one very small. Although quite plain compared to the Cocle polychromes they have a certain charm of their own. They are usually well potted with thin walls and a smooth surface. Sometimes eroded. This piece is about six inches tall and six inches wide with a rounded bottom There is mild to moderated erosion. There is a place on the rim where a missing chip has been replaced. The surface is unevenly colored so it's hard to tell if there are repaired cracks or possibly replacedment of the bottom. I'm erring on the side of pointing out what"could"appear ... moreto be repairs. You will have to use your own judgment Please ask any questions or request more pictures before you place a bid as I will only offer a return if there has been a significant error made in the description. I do offer a thirty day window in which it can be returned. if accompanied by a statement from a recognized dealer auctioneer or curator that this is not genuine. This is from my personal collection. Approximately 3 3/4" x 2" inches About Mixtec( Wikipedia) The Mixtec/ˈmiːʃtɛk/ Or Mixtecos, are indigenous Mesoamerican peoples inhabiting the region known as La Mixteca which covers parts of the Mexican states of Oaxaca, Guerrero and Puebla. The Mixtec region and the Mixtec peoples are traditionally divided into highland Mixtecs or mixteca alta in northeast Guerrero and western Oaxaca, and ... moreLowland Mixtecs or mixteca baja northwest Oaxaca and southwest Puebla and Coastal Mixtecs inhabiting the pacific slope of southern Oaxaca and Guerrero. The Mixtecan languages form a major branch of the Otomanguean language family. In precolumbian times, a number of Mixtecan city states competed with each other and with the Zapotec kingdoms. The major Mixtec polity was Tututepec which rose to prominence in the 11th century under the leadership of Eight Deer Jaguar Claw- the only Mixtec king to ever unite the Highland and Lowland polities into a single state. Like the rest of the indigenous peoples of Mexico, the Mixtec were conquered by the Spanish invaders and their indigenous allies in the 16th century. Pre-Columbia their numbered 1.5 million Mixtecs.3] Today there are approximately 800,000 Mixtec people in Mexico, and there are also large populations in the United States. Late Classic or Post-Classic Mayan or Vera Cruz Culture- Circa 250 AD- 1200 AD. El Salvador or Mexico. A number of these wheeled pieces are known and are thought to date from the Classic to Late Post-Classic Mayan Period(250 AD- 1200 AD) Various attributions for similar objects are to the Olmec. Mayan, Toltec, and Vera Cruz cultures, so maybe they were made by a number of cultures. It seems that it is not known whether these wheeled pieces were made as children’s toys, ceremonial effigies, or had some ... moreother purpose. Probably ceremonial, possibly burial pieces. This piece is hand-made and has all four wheels. It is in the form of a jaguar. With a long tail, upright ears, a detailed face and an open mouth. The piece appears to have four original wheels, but the axles(sticks) have been replaced since the original wood would long ago have deteriorated. There are traces of red paint on the face. The surfaces show. In addition to some traces of paint, darkening, light encrustation, old wear to the rolling surfaces of the wheels, and an overall aged darkened patina. There are several archeological or collection markings to the underside of the jaguar. As you can see in the photographs. This piece was purchased at a Butterfield and Butterfield auction in San Francisco about 20 years ago and was part of an old collection being sold. I bought it from the purchaser shortly after he obtained it from the auction house. It has been in my own collection since 1994. An image search on google for“precolumbian toy” will bring up quite a bit of information about similar pieces. AGE: Circa 250 AD- 1200 AD. Mayan or Vera Cruz(probably) CONDITION: Good condition. As shown in
