With two spikes on the side and one center raised ridge, there is also a triangular shaped earring on the figures left ear, and the piece has a chip to the lower right ear. The piece has a whistle incorporated on the top of the headdress which still works playing only one note. Bottom of the piece, near the neck appears such that the figure is depicted wearing a necklace. The piece is in excellent condition, with much of the original paint still evident, face is red in color, and headdress is a light brown. May be some candle wax residue in bowl. There was a fair amount of dust on this item when it was photographed and shows especially on the jagged rim of the bowl. ADDED DETAILS: This is an unusual piece depicting a 4-legged figure with a bowl/vessel on its back. The face is typical for the region-slit eyes. Beaked nose and broad spool ears. The high headress becomes part of the razor-jagged-edge of the bowl. The bowl is broad and deep and is dark. Possibly from incense or small ceremonial burnings. 2 Antique Clay figures Man & Woman, Nayarit ?. Pre Columbian Pottery Very Old
These two figures were bought at an Estate Sale from a very Important Oregon Artist who loved Mexico. These were in his private collection and appear to be artifacts from a dig done decades ago or maybe even much longer ago. They could be hundreds of years old or thousands. I am no expert so I just don't know. They loose a little dust every time they are handled so I was very careful in photographing them. Please ask questions before bidding if you are not sure. I am no expert, just know that these appear to be a red clay and as you can see from the photographs some of the areas of each figure are worn off and a dust comes off of them when handled because they are so old. I have never had anything this old so will pack very gently when shipping them to you and if you have any special shipping instructions I will do my best to comply.

It is mounted on a wooden pedestal that gives the information about the piece and the back is an advertisement for Valisone Cream. This looks prehistoric and I believe it to be an authentic piece. The ad had me concerned, but the owner of this piece is a retired Archaeologist, so I now feel comfortable again calling this pottery piece an authentic primitive piece from Colima, Mexico. The walls are thin and tapered and the bowl has good symmetry. The designs on the sides represent"achirana" the spiral wells found in this very dry region. Offered here is a nicely worked Huastec(Te'enek) culture pre-columbian pottery bowl. The Huastec occupied the coastal regions of Mexico. Along the waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Thought to be remnants of Mayan settlers who expanded into the area along the eastern gulf coast of Mexico, their known culture was influenced by neighboring societies, but remained the culturally dominant peoples in their region between 750-800 BCE. It is believed that the Huastec civilization occupied the northeastern gulf area of Mexico somewhere between 1100-900 BCE. This former museum piece. With visible museum markings, remains intact. But has of two chips on the bowl's rim. There is also a surface crack that runs from the rim edge halfway down the front surface of the bowl. This auction is for an authentic Huari canteen from about 700 AD. The vessel measures 6 inches wide x 7.75 inches tall with a mirror-like burnished surface. The top of the canteen is painted black with rayed eyes and the neck has a chevron design. The lugs are intact. Although I regard this as Huari. There is a chance that this is very late Nazca. If you take a look at p 48 of Proulx's book, A Sourcebook of Nazca Iconography, you will find a description of late phase Nazca items that fits the designs and finish on this canteen. However, the shape of the canteen is unlike other Nazca canteens I have seen.
