ANTIQUE STEAMER TRUNK VINTAGE VICTORIAN HIGH DOME TOP CHILD'S TRUNK
During the mid to late 1800's trunks were being made with a dome shape top. This was due to passengers not wanting their trunks being put at the bottom of the stack when traveling. Medium size trunk may have been used for a child. The wood all appears solid and it looks all be pine. Exterior is wrapped in metal with wooden strips and mesh like fabric. The bottom of the trunk has wooden strips with metal casters for rolling. The trunk measures 26 inches long X 18 inches high X a depth of 15 inches. There are round decorative pieces of some type of metal decorating the top and front. The pattern of the canvas is called Mesh and Square. The interior of the trunk is thin pin with light brown paper covering it. Trunks made toward the end of the 1800's used more decorative paper inside. There is an old lithograph picture of a young girl ... moreon the interior side of the dome top. There is a tray that has a compartment that can be removed. It has a lid and a lithograph paper design on it. I believe the wood to be pine and I am not sure what material any of the hardware is. The lock will need a skeleton key which I do not have. Ladycomet Victorian Refreshed Dome Top Steamer Trunk Antique Chest With Key
Nice Freshened Up Antique Dome Top Steamer Trunk With Working Lock& Key Here is a cute metal dome top that we picked up and freshened it up. There are nine pictures above for you to view. Here are the trunk's dimensions: from left to right across the front is 30 inches. From floor to top is approximately 22 inches, and from front edge to back edge is 16 1/2 inches. The embossed metal on the top and front has flowers and leaves patterned onto it. This is the original metal and paint from the factory. The rest of the metal has been freshened up and hand painted in black and gold leaf. The outer slat boards appear to be ash or oak and they have been given two coats of polyurethane. This pretty dome top comes with the original working lock. We have matched up a key that does work with this lock. The front two latches are also original ... moreand work well since the springs are still intact. The side handles were missing and have been replaced with Amish made black leather stitched straps. Going to the interior, we have removed the paper lining from the wood since it was worn out looking. The interior wood has been given two coats of polyurethane. A picture of a young person posing has been added to the underside of the dome. A wooden piece has been put from the front on the inside to the back. It has been done so so the trunk lid will line up with the lock and lower latches. Going to the bottom underneath this cute trunk, it has normal wear and it also has the four factory original metal casters on the bottom that still do spin. This one has been pretty much freshened up instead of totally refinished. It did turn out to be nice looking. Especially with the flowered metal. 1800s ANTIQUE VICTORIAN HUMP BACK NICE DOME TOP CHEST TRUNK VINTAGE RESTORED
Here is a nice medium-sized trunk from the late 1800s or very early 1900s. A very well made dome/ hump top trunk or stage coach chest. We sometimes see these refered to as steamer trunks also. It is made of wood. Trimmed or covered with ornate embossed tin with a great geometric pattern to it. It measures 34" inches wide x 21 1/2" inches deep[front to back] and 24" inches tall– a perfect complement to any rustic decor whether modern or antique. The trunk is constructed of a box with hardwood slats across the top for protection during shipping on all four sides and top. It has been restored with thick stitched brown leather handles which are identical to the originals and a new lid stay to hold it open– otherwise the trunk and all of its hardware are in their original. Yet opens easily. This one actually has its original lock and key and is in working condition but to lock you need to apply pressure to the front of the hasp. Very rare all oak slat and stave antique dome top trunk 29"l x 14"d x 20"h by Excelsior Co with original hardware including original lift out tray. Rollers, leather latches and handles, wood insert and functioning letter compartment.All original. Has original J.G. Allen Trunks paper label stating its purchase. Original leather lifter stamped"Excelsior Patented Jan. 7. 1868" Very good condition but does show authentic age and wear. From scratches, scuff marks and years of use. Which recently sold a similar trunk for $1,395: This trunk style was first patented by Jonathan S. Eaton of Roxbury. Mass. granted on Jan. 7, 1868. The unique feature was a trunk that is completely covered with strips of wood over a thick wooden body, making it more durable and attractive than others. In the patent description, Mr. Eaton explained that this trunk could be given a fine finish which would make it"useful even as a piece of furniture suitable for a chamber" yes, that means"room" to us) The name"Excelsior" was given to the trunk style after the patent was granted and it means"superior" or"the highest standard" The oak slat trunks were made in the U.S. but not by the Excelsior Lock Co. Which came along many years later. There are various trunks out there with locks marked Excelsior Lock Co. Newark NJ, but they did not make these trunks.
