Antique Trunk Circa 1820's to 1830's 1832 Newspaper Inside Very Old Trunk
For sale today is a beautifully restored smaller primitive trunk. The piece of wood is one piece of wood that has been steam bent. Attached to the inside of the trunk is an 1832 newspaper. The paper is in very poor condition and someone has written circa 1832 on the inside of the lid. This the oldest trunk that I have ever worked on! This trunk was structurally sound when the restoration started and the wood bottom is solid and has two original slats. The leather hinges are new to the trunk and the lid closes well. The center lock has been polished. Is missing the top half and there is no key. The original wrought iron handles are in VGC. This trunk could be as much as 182 years old! This neat old trunk is 27W. 13 1/2D, 11 3/4H and weighs 12 lbs. When packed and ready to ship this trunk will be 30W, 17D, 15H and weigh 18 lbs. Circa 1820's Federal Cherry Chest Of Drawers W/Flame Mahogany Front - Two Tone
Circa 1820's Federal Two Tone Chest Of Drawers From a local estate this piece made in the 1820's out of mainly Cherry wood with Flame Mahogany veneered fronts. The piece is solid and of heavy construction with the front drawers being anywhere from 1 to 1 1/2" thick. Each drawer is of tongue and groove construction with the key holes having either Maple or Ivory inserts. The drawers do open and close smoothly. Second drawer has beaded edge work all around front face. The only problem with this piece is the numerous veneers chips on the sides and edges of some of the drawers and front fascia. Most of them have been there forever and really aren't that noticeable but you look at the photo's and decide for yourself. We'd like to believe it adds charm and character. The other problem is a small piece of one of the back ... morefeet is missing and there is an ink blotch on the top both of which can be seen. Again, it is to be expected for a piece this old but otherwise it is solid, sturdy and clean. Trunks of this size were first sold in the very late 1700's and early 1800's. But really didn't become popular until about 1810. Dome-top trunks became popular with travelers beause their shape required that they end up on top of the trunk pile. The domed surface made it all but impossible to stack another trunk on top, so these would usually go on top of the pile. This was very important- it meant your trunk be unloaded first upon reaching your desitination, so you could be on your was before the rest of the passengers. It's important ... moreto note that this trunk was originally covered in animal hide- most likely horse hide, with the hair still attached. Known as'hide trunks' these were popular with tavelers of the day and were made by small shops, saddlers, and blacksmiths throughout the eastern United States. The make. According to the label, was Robert Burr, who operated in Boston for several decades. Hide-covered trunks like yours were often made by saddlers in varous towns and places all up and down the eastern seaboard. a basic wooden box was constructed, and then a wet animal hide, usually horse hide, was stretched over the box and nailed in place with copper or brass tacks. As the hide dried it would shrink a little, which made the wood joinery come together tightly, adding strength to the trunk. The owner's initials were often set in into the top of the trunk with decorative tacks, and hand-forged handles were added for ease in lifting. Burr ran a shop on Tremont Street in Boston with his brother(we believe they were brothers- may have been cousins) James.
