Large Refinished Slightly Curved Top Trunk ANTIQUE Ca. 1890's
Up for auction to day we have a large(34.5 x 21 x 22 inches) trunk that has been refinished inside and outside. The old dried canvas was removed to highlight the wood underneath. Sanded a handful of times, then treated with natural stain, tung oil, then a few coats of satin polyurethane. The metal work was painted flat black then sealed with the poly. This trunk is heavy, about 45-50 pounds. Husband lined the inside with wood, making it nice and clean and ready to store anything you like. Great for boots, winter blankets, you name it. Trunk is a great size for under a window for plants or in the bedroom or office as a table. Being that it has a very slight curved top. Still useful for magazines, books, plants, and your coffee cup or glass of wine. Top of trunk is a different wood than the body and is lighter. Antique Refinished slightly curved Top Trunk - 5 slat top
Antique refinished steamer trunk dating to the late 1800’s. Ca. 1880’s. This trunk is solid and heavy– it was originally canvas covered and the canvas was removed to highlight the gorgeous wood underneath. This trunk also has had its share of rough riding. The previous owner used it as a wood block of some sort and when we salvaged it– it had many nails hammered into the top– in addition to two round drill holes. Almost looks like it could have been used for bee bee gun practice. My patient husband took all the nails out and sanded the wood smooth. We stained the wood with Early American Stain and then treated the trunk to three coats of Clear Satin Urethane. The wood grain is lovely. This beauty boasts 5 slats on the top. Wonderful decorative hardware, and a beautiful front lock plate. Latches on the front are very nice and work just fine. ... moreHinges on the back are solid and it retains original lid stay. Handles have been replaced and the inside awaits your creativity. We have cleaned it and vacuumed all the dust out of it. Measures: 30 x 20 x 22.5. Antique Curved Leather Top Saratoga Trunk Offering you beautiful curved Dome top trunk. This trunk once was quite an expensive beauty. The curved top. Plentiful nails and amazing-fine hardware makes this a high-end piece, often known as a Saratoga Trunk. The reason for the curved top is to ensure that this trunk would go on the top of the stack. Rather than having trunks stacked on top of it, damaging the contents. I have not altered or refinished this trunk. I purchased it from a lady who stated it was in the stable area of her very old, victorian home. The home was built in the early 1900's. INSIDE: I believe it is constructed of Pine with a floral paper design. Which means this trunk belonged to a Woman. OUTSIDE: Has a dark metal/tin tone. 4) wooden, Elm? vertical slats on the dome top, 2) horizontal wooden slats on the front& ... moreback, 1) wooden slat on each side. There is a 16" wide(wooden slats divide the leather area) Leather type Alligator design area on the top that extends down the front and back and along both sides. The metal work is very nice and when this trunk was new, must have been gorgeous. There are(8) metal shield type designs holding down the top wood slats. On the top side ends, there are large metal Crown like designs. There are(2) brown leather handles. 1 handle is torn but repairable. This trunk was definitely for a woman of importance. Approximate Dimensions: 22" High@ the highest-middle 32.5" Wide 17.5" Deep Condition: This trunk is in good antique condition. There is normal wear. Which is expected, due to it's age. The bottom inside does have a few minor cracking in the wood. There is not a lock on the trunk. All the nails& design hardware are there, as far as I can see. Antique Wooden Steam Trunk With Key Curved Top
Up for grabs is an antique wooden steamer trunk with the original key! This has the slight curve top. This measures 33.75" wide. 18.5" from top to bottom. All 4 casters are still attached and are original. The top has a couple splinters in the wood, along with the bottom front but none of them are deep enough to go through to the inside. Both side handles are gone. The inside top flap can be removed, as shown in the pictures. This is a very old trunk. It has surface scratches and typical age wear! Antique Refinished Slightly Curved top trunk - Ca. 1880's
Up for auction today we have a lovely refinished antique steamer trunk. Dating to the late 1880's to 1890's. Originally covered with thick canvas, what was left of the canvas was removed to highlight the gorgeous wood underneath. This size is impressive, a perfect trunk for storing winter blankets, pillows, or other seasonal items. It is slightly curved top, so will do fine with magazines on top or a cup of coffee. The wood on this trunk is a light honey pine color- natural stain was used as well as tung oil, then a few coats of clear shellac. When I found this trunk this summer at the Brimfield Flea Market I thought it might be European. As the style is similar to trunks made during this time in France and Germany. After consulting with a few trunk friends, they told me many of the American Trunk makers were trying to copy the style ... moreof the Europeans, using brass decorative ends and small brass buttons. The edges on this trunk are leather over the canvas and for the most part is very dried and has come off. The leather that remained I used mink oil then shellaced it several times- in some spots it still is chipping off- just wanted to share that. It gives it more of a rustic look, but it is over 100 years old and is by no means brand new. The Handles are long gone and the end caps are still there. But I chose to just put in ribbon rather than take the chance with removing the delicate rivets that are used to keep end caps on. If the new owner prefers, I am happy to put thin leather straps through the end caps for more durability. The back three hinges are very special- a very unique style hinge which makes you able to open the trunk without a lid stay. This style hinge was Patented May 3, 1887- and is imprinted on each hinge with that information. Now for the inside- I just have to say WOW. My sweet mom did an amazing job lining the inside of this trunk with gorgeous tapestry style fabric. Please feel free to ask for more photos. Happy to send them along. Antique Blanket chest.. pine, curved top, rope handles
You are looking at an antique blanket chest which is at least 100 years old. Auctioneer stated it was over 50 years old at auction sale in 1959.and there was quite a bidding challenge. Was looking for a trunk.but we decided right away to get this chest when we saw it. I kept my quilts in it. Probably from Scandinavia we were told and that got me even more interested. It is pine and heavy.has dovetailed corners.Wood pegs.no nails, nice iron hinges, rope handles and is a whiskey colored wood. There are three curved pieces on the top.and on the inside there are two wide planks on the bottom. There is a key"plate"but there was no key with it. There are signs of wear here and there on top.scratches.roughness.etc.nothing excessive. The heavy wear shows on the bottom edge and this is shown in the photos. The width of chest is 30 inches, ... morethe height in front 16 inches, the depth at side is 20 inches, height at dome 18 1/2 inches. This chest has been in a bedroom at foot of bed and contained old quilts.perfect for them. There no marks of I.D. as to country of origin. It is a darling chest. Any wear shown was there when purchased.and the"gouge" or whatever on bottom edge on one side and front edge we never tried to fix.This item is for pickup only.
