They generally have a curved top that slopes in both directions and built using a variety of construction methods including molded ply and barrel construction among others. Within this style of trunks are a few other names that have come about based on the positioning of the wood slates that cover the dome construction. The exact origin of these names is unknown but seem reasonable and listed below as I understand them. Barrel Stave Trunks(1860-1885) they generally date a bit earlier than most of the dome tops made and have horizontal running slats instead of vertical(end to end vs. over the top) Giving it a slightly different look. The word"stave" in this case refers to the wood slats. These trunks were mostly made from the late 1860's until about the mid 1880s when the other dome construction methods listed below became more widely used. Often early examples of this style have a graceful. Well proportioned look and the later examples into the 1870's are quite simply well made. This trunk is in good condition. Obviously it will show wear marks from age as it is over 100 years old. No rotted metal or holes present. Aren't you just drawn to these old trunks?To me. They represent a much simpler time in this country. It's that emotional connection that makes them so appealing to collectors, and will only increase the value of the piece in time. I have done my best to describe this piece. It is very old and will contain the usual wear marks of typical everyday use and travel. Antique Trunk, Dome/Barrel Top, Ladies Saratoga, Late 1800s, not steamer trunk
Wow. Great old trunk! Late 1800s Seward Trunk& Bag Co. Ladies Saratoga Trunk" Otherwise known as a"Barrel Stave Top" or"Dome Top" This style of trunk is quite often mistakenly referred to as a steamer trunk; steamer trunks are a maximum of 14" tall and flat. A bit rough. Someone removed the lock portion of the main latch. It is an unusual double latch design. The compartment lid inside has broken and been repaired. Corner wear, some surface rust and oxidation. Leather handles broke off and were replaced with some very heavy duty brass handles a long time ago. The brass handles appear to be quite old. One of the cast strap clamps is broken yet all there. There is some damage to the tin clad skin. Original lining is cracked and torn in places. It appears to be all original with the exception of the handles ... moreand has not been painted(painting these trunks takes away from their value significantly) I'm sure I'm missing something so please look at the photos carefully and ask questions! Item is available for preview with appointment. I personally would leave it an unrestored original yet it could be restored bringing its value up. This would make a great display piece in your store, business or home. It has a covered hat/ glove compartment in the lid. Hardwood slats. The inside of the lid has the 2 original color chromo-lithographs; one depicting a man pushing a wheelbarrow with a woman and 3 children inside and the other is a woman pushing her daughter on a swing with a smaller picture of what appears to be ice skaters. Simple, Elegant Antique Barrel Top Trunk Absolutely Beautiful Interior w/ Tray
Beautiful Antique Barrel Top Trunk Even though this trunk does not have some of the fancy hardware and design that others do. This is one of my favorite trunks from my collection. It is simple yet extremely elegant and stylish. The wood tone is very rich and the wood is soft and smooth. It has a nice lock and fairly rare latches that have a spring design which you pull down to latch and unlatch. The interior is lined with an absolutely beautiful print and it comes with the tray as pictured. The main metal looks to be copper but I don't have a way to test to be sure. H orizontal wood looks to be oak but again I can't say with certainty. This trunk is a wonderful barrel top(barrel stave) construction trunk. The exterior metal. Slat clamps, and working lock(with key) are all original. The parts were cleaned, and given a light clear coat. The interior is just as original, and it is amazing! Untouched, except for some minor repairs, you rarely see interiors in this condition. This trunk is roomy and sturdy. It is reinforced with metal strips and decorative details. There is age related surface wear. The inside of trunk is sectioned in two by a solid wood divider. The trunk could benefit from refurbishing the inside for aesthetics. But is serviceable as is also. We do not have a key. And time has eliminated the side leather handles. GORGEOUS WHITE VICTORIAN ANTIQUE"SARATOGA TRUNK" This trunk dates from the late 1870s to 1890s. It is called a Saratoga trunk which became popular with the wealthier class for those traveling to spas and to the Saratoga Springs in New York during the Victorian Era. It was a large domed top s tylewith fancy trim. Covered in either leather or metal. Early trunk ads and catalogs describe the Saratoga as"large round trunk of the highest class. It is believed that dome tops where made for those who wanted to have their trunks packed on the top of the baggage so as to avoid damage at the bottom of the heap. The chest is covered with embossed metal which has an ornate scrolling design. Solid wood slats reinforce the wood structure and add a beautiful design. The wood finish still beautiful. The trunk closes with a lock(no key) in the middle and two latches. The hardware is stamped metal with a fancy design which looks like somewhat like a Celtic shamrock. Metal wheels on the bottom 30" long x 18" tall x 17" deep. Weighs 24 pounds Great old trunk. Reasonable offers considered CONDITION: This is an old trunk and will show some signs of being old. It is in great condition for its age. There is an area on the back corner which has a brown spot. Which feels like glue residue(see residue) This appears to be able to be peeled off but has been left alone for fear of damaging the chest. The leather handles are missing. There is a lock although we have not snapped the lock shut because we do not have a key. The hinges and hardware are all present. The wood is in great condition, no rotting. Here pictured is an antique barrel-top steamer trunk. Measures approx. 37" across. 21.5" back-to-front, and 25" high(from base to top of barrel arch) Made of vertical slats(approx. 1.75" wide) Has a compartment inside the lid. Two(2) Railway Express Co. stickers grace one end. Casters(original, I believe) on bottom. The amber glass coasters seen in the photos are NOT the casters; the amber glass coasters are there just to keep the trunk off the rug, but you can have them, if you like) One leather strap is missing; the remaining one is intact, but split. The lock is by Eagle Lock Co. Terryville, Conn. USA, but there is no key, sorry. The interior needs some work, as you can see. The exterior has been preserved nicely; oiled but NOT painted.
