Last year. April-June, I made a lot of eBayers very happy! I held a big sale of antique paintings and other items(over 100! from a large London mansion. Enthusiastic buyers won LOTS of wonderful family heirlooms for very little(see my 100% feedback! and came to pick them up from the house(a few minutes walk from London's Oxford Circus) I'd intended to move out and spent the rest of the year abroad. I'm now back in the UK and the place is(contrary to planning) still mine! So I'm back in the old house again, temporarily, and will be selling a few more things until my final move. Some of these things are items I hadn't intended to sell, so I hope you find something you like! Large 19th Century Oak Chest with Brass Lion's Feet and Older Parts. Used for Bedroom Blanket Box. Storage Chest/Trunk/Box"A grand old chest! ... moreFor years this has been a magical dressing up box! It's full of lots of antique costumes and accessories. Younger relations head straight for it when they visit! But it would be good as a blanket box or general storage. It's very tall and has a huge amount of space. It looks a bit more impressive than many similar items. Having some grand trimmings, almost armorial. The carvings on the front are very imposing and clearly of some age. This type of carving often surrounded a coat of arms, which may have been removed in years gone by. It also has some lovely brass lion's feet(which really need shining up…they'll look really good when polished! We believe the front of the chest is much old than the rest. It's not uncommon to have wooden furniture rebuilt over the years. Often when they suffer from woodworm or general wear. One of the four rosettes on the front isn't there(I've only just noticed this, after all these years! It's dark wood, so you don't really notice. Rare Antique Iron Bound Wooden Traveling Trunk - Mid 19th Century - Coffee Table
This is a rare 19th century wooden trunk in wonderful condition. This wooden trunk has a rich. Dark hue and is bound with iron straps. The rich patina and rivets attest to the age of the trunk. The hand forged handles on each end of the trunk are in perfect condition. The heavy iron hinges and latches are reminiscent of medieval iron pieces. The interior of the trunk is in very nice condition and features fine natural wood. This trunk is still in spectacular condition because it was built by skilled craftsmen. It remains a strong and sturdy piece and has no real damage of any kind. It measures 49 1/2" long x 28 1/2" wide x 20" high. I believe the original latches were altered at some point, but the trunk is all original and will be a fine piece for many years to come. The chest sits on a small stand to elevate it from the floor, I don't know that it is original with the chest. Inside the chest is a metal lining, I am told it is lead. There is a label on the lid for"Benson and Hedges, Importer of Havana Cigars and Egyptian Cigars" there is an address for London and for Park Avenue in New York City, between Holland House and Waldorf Astoria, at the bottom of the label it says Pat'd 1901. updated information from a fellow ebayer- I have collected and restored many B&H humidors over the years. Retaining the original reddish stain. Does have age appropriate expected wear. Measures 38" long, 16" wide and 1" high and has a early hinged lift lid top. In colonial America, blanket chests were constructed of various species of lumber ranging from inexpensive pines used for"country" type furniture to more expensive hardwoods such as walnut, cherry, and imported mahogany. The latter were used for more formal pieces of furniture that only the very wealthy could afford. As early as 1660, craftsmen in Massachusetts and Connecticut were fashioning paneled and carved oak chests, constructed of wide stiles and rails. These had ... morefloating panels with elaborately carved intaglio decorations. Instead of a paneled top in the English fashion, the Colonial chest had a plain pine board top. This unadorned top surface was ideal for seating and did not need cushions thereby making it more functional. In their crude fashion, these chests were the counterpart of the elaborate cas, armoires, and caskets owned throughout Europe by wealthy families. Many households would not do without one of these blanket chests as few homes had a source of heat within the bedroom. Antique Victorian Chinese Camphor Wood Trunk Chest Locker Early 1800's or Older This is a beautiful piece. It measure's 37"x19"x16" larger once boxed) and is in really good antique condition. It has a strong patina and the exterior front lock cover has been lost. All of the other hardware. Hinges, handles, corners. And molding braces are in place. It has a scratches and marks all over the outside, but the inside is in great shape. The bottom panel has a crack in it. But it doesn't appear to effect anything. I didn't even see it until I was taking pics of the bottom. It is visible in the pic 8. A few of the previous owners left there names and dates that they owned the trunk during the 1800's. It appears it was passed down through several generations of a family of San Franciscans and San Francisco Bay Area. ... moreI know a little bit about this family through some research. Most of them have an easily traceable history. I am not going to make their names public however. A person of good authority was able to translate the cursive writing under the lid and revealed that the outer trim around the top and bottom of the trunk were installed as protective measures while traveling. Here is what he could make out: These trunk? corners. Top and bottom of trunk can be(revealed, seen, uncovered? by unscrewing the screws and slipping the strips off. Strips only were used while traveling. Here is a little bit more of what this person shared with me: The type of chest you have is the very best. These chests are made by Chinese craftsmen and have invisible dovetails. Incised brass fittings and a floating panel top(to prevent it from splitting in different climates) There was a very active trade with China when San Francisco was a boom town and these chests were brought in by the hundreds. Most have disappeared or are held by descendants of the original owners. The man who did the fitting did it very cleverly– probably a real craftsman who knew what he was doing. 18 th to 19 th CENTURY ANTIQUE EUROPEAN CAMEL BACK TRUNK Up for sale is my 18 th to 19 th Century Antique European Camel Back Trunk that came from the Estate of Lydia Gordon in Santa Cruz. CA(my sister-in-law) The history as I know it is Lydia is from the Netherlands and in 1971 came to America with my brother and brought the Camel Back Trunk with her. I estimate the age to be between the late 18 th century and the 19 th century. Square nails were used to construct this trunk this type of nail was used during this time; they stopped using square nails at the turn of the 20 th century. I had an appraiser look at this trunk and her estimate was around one million in excellent condition. It is an unusual size and a true antique. Has wonderful metal detailing including fleur-de-lis on the metal straps. There are the initials of the original owner. A. E. P. and 2 paper labels. The top of the inside has the original red with some remaining detailing and some of it is missing. The bottom has a plain paper lining. There is no tray on the inside; that is missing. The original strap or chain holding the top when it is in the open position is gone and has been replaced which you can see in the photos. The trunk is in as found condition; I have done nothing to it. It was purchased at an Antique Auction. Wonderful Antique condition. No major issues and overall good condition. Be sure to read the entire description and view all the photos. This is an early wood trunk with a cloth. Or canvas, covering. There is some wear to the canvas as can be seen in the photos. There are really nice wooden bands which I believe are oak and then equally as wonderful metal trim around all the edges with very nice detailing such as the fleur-de-lis. Also on the bottom are 4 small castors so the trunk can be moved easily on the floor. There are also very nice metal"bumpers" added to the trunk in strategic places like the top edge and corners along the metal strips as well as the wood to act as bumpers to protect the body of the trunk. Very nice. There is a slight rounded shape to the top of the trunk. Everything with the exception of the chain already mentioned appears to be original including the leather handles on the side which is rare to find in these old trunks. American Painted Antique Blanket Mule Chest over Drawer, 19th Century
Red Painted American Blanket Chest over Drawer Primarily Yellow Pine. 19th Century Item# 130010CPL26 This is a very attractive Painted American Blanket Chest over a single Drawer retaining an early grungy surface over earlier surfaces of the same color. It is a six-plank blanket chest. Crafted practically in a somewhat crude and certainly rural manner; the face and back are nailed into the sides of the case with square iron nails, this hidden behind half-round black painted molding outlining the facade of the case. The bottom board is nailed in even rows along the sides and along the back, beneath which a single drawer slides in and out of the case. The drawer construction matches that of the case, the joints half-lapped and nailed with iron rose heads, these resting over runners of the same[unidentified] hardwood nailed to the sides of the ... morecase with iron rose heads. The single plank top lifts over original cotter pin hinges supplemented by modern hinges for strength, these modern hinges actually the second set of hinges placed on the case to supplement the cotter pins. The result is a smooth operating top, lifting easily to reveal a large storage area and original steel lock(no key) The cleats flanking the case are nailed to the underside of the lid with a series of even rose heads. All of the brasses are added for effect, the original case having only wooden knobs on the lower drawer at some point before it was painted. The case terminates over boot-jack feet. For anyone passionate about country-style American Painted antiques. This is a beautiful little piece that is not only rather eye-catching, but also quite practical. With a well worn and heavily patinated surface testifying to years of use and enjoyment, the chest remains young in terms of strength and possible length of life if well cared for. Outstanding antique campaign chest of drawers constructed from pine and stained a deep. Slightly reddish brown. This piece, designed for easy transport during a military campaign, looks like it comes apart in two pieces. The chest has four graduated drawers, each with brass bail handle pulls and key surrounds. The faces of the drawers have been attached with fine dovetail joinery. The entire chest rests on bracket feet that are both solid and decorative. The wood has a wonderful aged patina and the finish has minor wear and some alligatoring, showing off the piece's age. This chest most likely dates from the 1800's. This is a nice antique American New York or Massachusetts early 19th century Federal chest of drawers. I'm leaning more towards Massachusetts because the estate it came from collected earl American Massachusetts furniture as well as antique Massachusetts artwork. In pretty good shape considering it's age and retains a very old possibly original finish. It does have some imperfections throughout which is to be expected as it is nearing 200 years old with the worst being the cracks to the the top and one side but overall very nice shape and it comes exactly as shown. I believe the handles and hardware to be original with the exception of the 2nd drawer keyhole being replaced and it has some holes by the keyholes because someone had covered over the original hardware with Eastlake hardware which I removed to find the originals underneath ... moreas well as it having some paint flakes to the top of the carvings on the side. An 1800s elm blanket box/ chest. Wonderfull colour/ patina and elm grain detail. Hand forged iron lid hinges. Recently wax polished so all ready for the home. Fully treated throughout and guaranteed for woodworm as the chest had suffered in the past as seen in the pictures, some areas around the top edges to the interior are filled, its very common for elm to be attacked by worm. Antique 19th Century Victorian Child's Doll Trunk Chest Box
Up for auction is an original 19th Century Victorian Child’s Doll Trunk. Everything looks original. It measures approximately 16 inches across the front and 9.5 inches across the side and approximately 10.25 inches tall at its highest point. It is not flat on top but is slightly domed(see pics) The lid closes and it is aligned. The hinges attached to the lid are firm. There is no key. The tray is missing. The leather handles on the side are missing. The inside of the trunk smells like wood and not mildew or mustiness. There is a cut out portion on the front of the top of the trunk(see pics) It has splits. Cracks and paper covering is peeled and falling off and leather has cracks. Some metal parts are damaged and bent. Hinges do not hold the lid up when fully extended. Obviously, based upon my pictures, this trunk needs tender loving care ... moreand complete restoration. Antique Travel Box made of Burled wood with Mother of Pearl around key hole and top of box. Inside is completely outfitted with the exception of a couple of nail implement. ANTIQUE STAR TRUNK LOCK SMALL KEY - HARD TO FIND - 19TH CENTURY
This is an old key for some Star Lock Works trunk locks that have the straight vertical slot and the April 1877 patent date(see pictures) The key measures 1 1/2" long and is the style that fits many of the smaller Star locks. It may not work for every one of these but they have worked on the ones I have had in the past. It is an original Star Lock Works trunk lock key. Very hard to find. Note: There is a larger version of these keys which fits larger size Star locks. Used on many regular size trunks. This key was found in an old drawer with other keys. This is an antique 19th century sea chest with dovetailing at the joints. Key is missing at key hole area. This sea chest has cracking and wear to the wood especially at corners due to age. Also please note the crack split on the top of this sea chest. This sea chest is still intact and is in fair overall condition for it's age. However, it will need to be restored. There are also some indentations in the wood. Please check photos carefully for an explanation of the condition of this item before purchasing. American Green Painted Antique Blanket Chest, Pennsylvania c. Mid 19th Century
AMERICAN GREEN PAINTED PINE BLANKET CHEST. PENNSYLVANIA 19th Century with Dovetailed Feet Signed on bottom"Jonas Cros.y" and inscribed in lid"Amelia Saltsmon" Item# 1409AIU01P This is a wonderful early 19th Century painted blanket chest from Southeastern Pennsylvania. The surface dry and worn with an early green paint. The surface is plain and undisturbed with embellishment, the whole being deeply oxidized and full of charming wear. The construction is standard and uncomplicated, the exterior of the case crafted of six broad planks of Eastern White Pine, the sides and bottom joined with exposed dovetail construction. The base is affixed with a series of small pegs and the feet are delicate little brackets with exposed dovetailing to the front and sides. Likewise, the molding around the top is affixed with pegs set at regular ... moreintervals, the lid lifting on original wrought iron strap hinges affixed with mostly original screws. The original steel lock and catch survive in the case, though no key is available. The till is somewhat unique, the outer edge lifting in grooves on either side to reveal a compartment below the till- the lifting wall is not unusual, but this usually reveals drawers instead of this tidy compartment. The bottom of the case is inscribed in a now faded ink"Jonas Cros.y" the J and the C both being quite accomplished with extensive swirling. This form is easily incorporated into modern decor in so many ways. Including as a coffee table, an entertainment stand beneath a flat screen, while also working wonderfully in front of a period bed as it was intended. It is a striking piece that will certainly be cherished in your home for a lifetime. Measurements: 48 9/16" W x 18 3/4" D x 18 3/4" H Condition Report: Early dry green surface not the first with remnants of gray and lower layers with traces of red; surface is worn and scratched. American Federal Painted Antique Blanket Chest, Pennsylvania, Early 19th Century
FINE AMERICAN FEDERAL PAINTED BLANKET CHEST ON FLARED FRENCH FEET Pennsylvania. C. Second Quarter of the 19th Century Item# 410SLU18 A very striking use of the flared foot in the blanket chest. The taste for Neoclassical austerity quickly translated into even the most functional of rural furnishings in the second quarter of the nineteenth century. These developments are clear in the angular reeded molding around the base, the softened scrolling of the returns around the feet and the simple escutcheon employed at the lock. Beyond these design changes, the structure of the chest remains unchanged from the late eighteenth-century form- the projecting molding around the top is affixed on a tongue-in-groove with an even series of wooden pins driven into the top, this raising on it's original rectangular cast iron hinges. The case leaves all ... moredovetailing along the front, sides and back exposed- the dovetails were considered a mark of excellent craftsmanship and were a proud part of the form, something to be displayed and considered by the customer of the day. The dovetailing continues in the back of the case through the rear foot supports, these affixed with large and carefully cut dovetails to the facings, all feet also supported with the typical bevelled horizontal blocking and large vertical interior blocks(two replaced, one absent, one original) Retaining it's original burgundy red painted surface. This chest is an absolute treasure of a find- the state of preservation throughout is remarkable with only the most minor of touch ups, the whole being free of any restoration after two hundred years of use. It was clearly cherished by it's owners. The bottom of the interior has a large scrolled inscription that is illegible to us, a more tidy but still illegible inscription beside the lock(not pictured) For any serious collector of Americana.
