Great looking original 19th century folk art dulcimer from about 1850-70. 33" x 7" x 3 1/2" Hand made from red walnut with early square nail construction. Wonderful old crusty surfaces. Carved chestnut peg. With a part of another. Not sure what the white inset string supports are made of- they appear to be hand made, but might be later replacements. Last year. April-June, I made a lot of eBayers very happy! I held a big sale of antique paintings and other items(over 100! from a large London mansion. Enthusiastic buyers won LOTS of wonderful family heirlooms for very little(see my 100% feedback! and came to pick them up from the house(a few minutes walk from London's Oxford Circus) I'd intended to move out and spent the rest of the year abroad. I'm now back in the UK and the place is(contrary to planning) still mine! So I'm back in the old house again, temporarily, and will be selling a few more things until my final move. Some of these things are items I hadn't intended to sell, so I hope you find something you like! Large 19th Century Oak Chest with Brass Lion's Feet and Older Parts. Used for Bedroom Blanket Box. Storage Chest/Trunk/Box"A grand old chest! ... moreFor years this has been a magical dressing up box! It's full of lots of antique costumes and accessories. Younger relations head straight for it when they visit! But it would be good as a blanket box or general storage. It's very tall and has a huge amount of space. It looks a bit more impressive than many similar items. Having some grand trimmings, almost armorial. The carvings on the front are very imposing and clearly of some age. This type of carving often surrounded a coat of arms, which may have been removed in years gone by. It also has some lovely brass lion's feet(which really need shining up…they'll look really good when polished! We believe the front of the chest is much old than the rest. It's not uncommon to have wooden furniture rebuilt over the years. Often when they suffer from woodworm or general wear. One of the four rosettes on the front isn't there(I've only just noticed this, after all these years! It's dark wood, so you don't really notice. Rare Early 19th Century NY State Albany County Decorated Blanket Chest
You are bidding on a rare early 19th century Albany County Blanket Chest in its original paint and decoration. You just don’t see these around anymore. And this is a nice one. The case is all nicely dovetailed, and the inside houses a till with a dovetailed drawer underneath it. It is all painted all the way around with the front and two sides retaining most of the original graining as well as the hand done decoration of swags and tassels in mustard paint. Also the large letters“L.G. in the center of the front. Paint on the top is worn and the two sides are missing a part of the molding on top. 19th Century Metal Bound STAGE COACH TRUNK Refinished JENNY LIND Style Lock
Beautiful Refinished 19th Century Stage Coach Trunk Solid Wood. Was covered on the outside w/ paper, but most of paper was gone paper was cleaned off. And trunk was sanded, and finished leather straps were added to the trunk. Original ones were gone I chose these straps. As the design on them was much like that of the original paper: The handle on the left side(when facing the front) is the original handle. Amazingly still very sturdy, the other is a replacement, matches very well The loop at the top above the lock is a replacement. Matches the handles The lock could presumably be made to work again. But doesn't at this time, I don't have the key either The lock is beautiful. It is a Jenny Lind style lock, very intricate and beautifully designed The inside is totally lined with leather. I chose this instead of paper or fabric since ... moreso many trunks from this century were covered with leather, I thought it would be awesome to have one lined with it instead, makes it unique and luxurious: The leather lining also has two very functional pockets on the back side. This is a rare 19th century wooden trunk in wonderful condition. This wooden trunk has a rich. Dark hue and is bound with iron straps. The rich patina and rivets attest to the age of the trunk. The hand forged handles on each end of the trunk are in perfect condition. The heavy iron hinges and latches are reminiscent of medieval iron pieces. The interior of the trunk is in very nice condition and features fine natural wood. This trunk is still in spectacular condition because it was built by skilled craftsmen. It remains a strong and sturdy piece and has no real damage of any kind. It measures 49 1/2" long x 28 1/2" wide x 20" high. LARGE MID-19th CENTURY SCOTTISH MAHOGANY CHEST OF DRAWERS WITH SPIRAL COLUMNS This beautiful mahogany chest is from Scotland and dates to the mid-19th century. The chest has a stepped back rectangular top which sits above a large beaded frieze panel. Flanked on each side by a smaller beaded panel. Beneath is a single deep drawer flanked on the left by two short drawers and on the right by a single deep drawer with a faux two drawer front. This row of drawers is above three graduated long drawers. Each of the chest’s drawers has turned knobs, brass escutcheons and their original locks. Although we do not have a key for the chest, the buyer can easily have a locksmith make a new key. The entire bank of drawers is flanked by elegant spiral reeded pilasters. A late18th to early 19th Century American Chippendale large chest of drawers. Possibly Southern in origin. Height- 43 5/8 inches Width- 43 inches Depth- 20 inches American Revolutionary to Federal Period large chest of drawers. Appropriate wear to the internal parts and rails consistent with the age. Original finish with wear. Replacement handles. The chest may have originally had single drop pulls and as there is a single hole space under the present handles. The chest sits on a small stand to elevate it from the floor, I don't know that it is original with the chest. Inside the chest is a metal lining, I am told it is lead. There is a label on the lid for"Benson and Hedges, Importer of Havana Cigars and Egyptian Cigars" there is an address for London and for Park Avenue in New York City, between Holland House and Waldorf Astoria, at the bottom of the label it says Pat'd 1901. updated information from a fellow ebayer- I have collected and restored many B&H humidors over the years. Retaining the original reddish stain. Does have age appropriate expected wear. Measures 38" long, 16" wide and 1" high and has a early hinged lift lid top. In colonial America, blanket chests were constructed of various species of lumber ranging from inexpensive pines used for"country" type furniture to more expensive hardwoods such as walnut, cherry, and imported mahogany. The latter were used for more formal pieces of furniture that only the very wealthy could afford. As early as 1660, craftsmen in Massachusetts and Connecticut were fashioning paneled and carved oak chests, constructed of wide stiles and rails. These had ... morefloating panels with elaborately carved intaglio decorations. Instead of a paneled top in the English fashion, the Colonial chest had a plain pine board top. This unadorned top surface was ideal for seating and did not need cushions thereby making it more functional. In their crude fashion, these chests were the counterpart of the elaborate cas, armoires, and caskets owned throughout Europe by wealthy families. Many households would not do without one of these blanket chests as few homes had a source of heat within the bedroom. On chilly nights it was convenient to merely go to the end of the bed and extract more bed covers to keep warm. I bought this chest almost 40 years ago. I am not a dealer in furniture and this is the only early American piece that I have. I was told it is an early 19th century blanket chest made in Pennsylvania. What I like about the chest is the painted floral design on the top and the fact that it is large and great storage. A hinged box is built in to hold candles. And are slots underneath them that were probably used for valuables. It measures 25" high, 51" long and 23" wide. Forged iron hinges allows the top to be opened and closed. The iron handles on the side are solid and can be used to lift and move the chest. Now that I have moved. I do not have room for this chest. Nicely dovetailed putty grained chest early 19th century
This is a great example of Early American Decorative Arts. The hand dovetailed chest may date from the late 18th century and was enhanced with 19th century putty graining with very folk art fans and circles. The paint is in very good shape for the age. As is the chest. The hinges are old and original. There are some later holes where cleats were added to reinforce the top(these were removed) Also the original lock was replaced by a 20th century lock which was removed leaving behind some scarring(see photos of front of chest) but nothing terribly noticeable. It has a strong patina and the exterior front lock cover has been lost. All of the other hardware. Hinges, handles, corners. And molding braces are in place. It has a scratches and marks all over the outside, but the inside is in great shape. The bottom panel has a crack in it. But it doesn't appear to effect anything. I didn't even see it until I was taking pics of the bottom. It is visible in the pic 8. A few of the previous owners left there names and dates that they owned the trunk during the 1800's. It appears it was passed down through several generations of a family of San Franciscans and San Francisco Bay Area. ... moreI know a little bit about this family through some research. Most of them have an easily traceable history. I am not going to make their names public however. A person of good authority was able to translate the cursive writing under the lid and revealed that the outer trim around the top and bottom of the trunk were installed as protective measures while traveling. Here is what he could make out: These trunk? corners. Top and bottom of trunk can be(revealed, seen, uncovered? by unscrewing the screws and slipping the strips off. Strips only were used while traveling. Here is a little bit more of what this person shared with me: The type of chest you have is the very best. These chests are made by Chinese craftsmen and have invisible dovetails. Incised brass fittings and a floating panel top(to prevent it from splitting in different climates) There was a very active trade with China when San Francisco was a boom town and these chests were brought in by the hundreds. Most have disappeared or are held by descendants of the original owners. The man who did the fitting did it very cleverly– probably a real craftsman who knew what he was doing. Laub Brothers was trunk makers located at 422 West Jefferson St. in Louisville.Ky. from 1860's till about 1910. This piece is an attic find from old Louisville area that I've had for several years,and have not found another like it in my search. It is as found. I never tried to clean it. One expert puts the date range from 1800-1820`s. Whether the engraving print was attached when the chest was made is not known. The engraving print inside lid is missing an area on the left side. The engraving is by Peter Maverick(Maverick family engravers of New York) of a sketch in oil by John Neagle. The engraving was done approx. 1826-1818 of the Neagle painting that was done in 1821 at the time Petalesharo and other Pawnee Indians came to Washington D.C. A superb quality 19th century rosewood and brass-bound travelling toilet box marked Asprey. New Bond St. with inlaid brass monogram to lid and flush handles to sides. The compartmental interior finished in blue velvet with watered silk lining to the lid which houses a removeable easel mirror. Condition: Good. There is a crack to the lid veneer. The crack is very tight and does not detract from the appearance of the piece. I suspect the lock has at some time been forced and this has pulled the trim plate from the lid along with a little of the underlying wood but there is no damage to the visual veneers. The gold gilded ormolu accents include the key hole surrounds and also the door pulls that each hold a different hand painted Sevres style porcelain disc for each pull. This chest is in excellent condition. You can tell the age by the toning of the underside wood. Like you see on the antique shows where you scratch your fingernail on the oxidized wood. There is a collection of various early wrought iron nails throughout. The top is a replacement of a similar vintage attached with late 19th century screws and hinges. Sturdy timeless storage. This chest is in superb antique condition being tight and sturdy with appropriate signs of wear including a small crack to the back none of which takes away from it's beauty. Rarity or stability. Possesses beautiful graining of carved elm wood with fine brass hardware in a traditional bat motif. The highest standards of traditional Korean workmanship and refinement were applied to the design and construction of this museum quality masterpiece of design. The chest measures 37& 1/2 x 16 x 62 inches. This chest is the type of piece that was used in the 19th century as a storage chest for blankets and clothing in the Korean home. RARE Antique ISAAC LIBBEY- ROCHESTER NEW HAMPSHIRE Deer Skin Covered Document box in good condition. This is a small size box measuring 10 inches in length x 7 inches wide x 5 3/4 inches high The Cool thing about this box is that it has a Baltimore Newspirint Lining. Please note the Pre-Civil war reference to"Happy New Year to All Readers of the Union" I also included a picture of the 1851 date. There are actually several references the year 1851. I do believe that the original owner used this paper to line this box during that time. Definitely. True to the period. Please look closely at the pictures to what I mean by this. This chest is sturdy and will last for many years to come. The box is missing some of it's tacks. 18th to 19th Century Antique European Camel Back Trunk
18 th to 19 th CENTURY ANTIQUE EUROPEAN CAMEL BACK TRUNK Up for sale is my 18 th to 19 th Century Antique European Camel Back Trunk that came from the Estate of Lydia Gordon in Santa Cruz. CA(my sister-in-law) The history as I know it is Lydia is from the Netherlands and in 1971 came to America with my brother and brought the Camel Back Trunk with her. I estimate the age to be between the late 18 th century and the 19 th century. Square nails were used to construct this trunk this type of nail was used during this time; they stopped using square nails at the turn of the 20 th century. I had an appraiser look at this trunk and her estimate was around one million in excellent condition. However this trunk is in good condition with the exception of some rough areas such as the wooden wheels. Wooden axel and the trunks stand. The locking mechanism ... moreis tricky to open but can be corrected. The key seems to have been repaired but is in working condition. I have done a lot of research and was unable to find another one like this. From what I have been able to gather from conversation with Lidia before she died it was in her family for as long as she could remember. Dealers are welcome to bid or negotiate selling price.
