Revealing a second wood panel. This second panel is removable by pulling up the small side wall that houses the inkwell. This action releases the wood panel below& within there are two secret compartment drawers. These hidden drawers are seen in photos. One brass inlay is missing at one bottom corner. No key. The interior writing surfice has a blue velvet fabric glued on and a black velvet ribbon acrossed the top where the hings are. There are six compartments on the inside for paper. Writing tools, and whatnots. The top lid has some cracking and veneer is missing on the side and it has damage where the hinges go(on top and bottom) See photos. The lock is present and there is no key. Locking top plate needs to be reattached. Its hinges need to be reworked. The hinges are included. But the location on the box needs to be repaired. And has eight inside compartments, two outside drawers, and four additional secret drawers hidden behind a wall on the inside. The top has an un-monogrammed brass cartouche. There are brass accents and a lock mechanism. But no key. The sloped writing desk still contains the original wood pen holder(7 1/2" long, 2" wide and 3/4" tall) and the glass powder jar with cover(1" tall and 1 1/2" wide) There are bits of wood veneer missing on the top and corners. There is some staining. And a few minor rips to the black and blue velvet on the inside. There is scuffing and scratching on the bottom. An amazing. Substantial piece weighing twenty-eight pounds. Victorian, rosewood, writing cabinet/sewing box/jewellery box with pull out writing slope. This cabinet has been very finely crafted and looks to be in a very good. Authentic condition. The rosewood has been carefully cleaned and polished and looks wonderful especially contrasting against the many mother of pearl decorative inlay pieces. The interior is very lavish and is all lined in a deep pink silk. The inside of the main lid there is a very aged piece of paper that looks to be a very old auction list in shillings and pence. Maybe this item was bought/sold many years ago through this auction. All the drawers work well and close flush. The feet are all present. The writing slope that pulls our from the bottom ... moreof the cabinet is in great condition. The outside part of the slope is lined in royal blue and the inside is lined with deep royal purple velvet and is in fine condition. It measures 1 1/2 inches square by 1 3/16 inches high(5 cm x 3.3 cm) Weight: 69 grammes There is no damage. It could use a clean up as has traces of ink residue and some wear to the plating on the lid. But It may be useful to fill that empty square compartment in your otherwise perfect writing slope. Mahogany Brass Bound Victorian Campaign Writing Slope 2 Brass inkwells 1855
It is highly crafted.High end very strong/sturdy. All the brass is firm and strong Both the brass inkwells are in good condition and they have screw locks. There are storage compartiments between the ink wells( one of them for pens) and 2 open catches to keep one of the writing surfaces in place. Side'secret' drawer with handle and handle the other side for lifting it. Fully opened it measures 57 x50 cms. Depth at rear is 15 cms and 3.5 cms at the front. Closed the writing slope meaures 50x28 cms and is 20 cms deep. It has a green blaze base. The plaque on the lid says' Presented to the Revd. A Philip by his Sabbeth Evening Communicans Class Dec. 25th 1855 It weighs 5.712 kilos!

He was famous for his top class topographical tunbridge ware of Hever. Tonbridge Castle and the lovely Penshurst Place among a few others. He is also famous for specialising in the very time consuming an beautifully intricate method of tesellated mosaic. This slope is a beautiful example of his work at its best and shows both a stunning portrayal of Penshurst Place as well as various beautiful marquetry inlay work and British flag ensigns. Henry Hollamby was a renowned Tunbridge Ware maker. He started in the Tunbridge Ware industry at the age ... moreof 12 in 1831 as an apprentice to George& James Burrows. After his apprenticeship he worked in his own business until 1891. Both as a retailer and a wholesaler. Unlike many of his contemporaries. Hollamby only worked in tesellated mosaic. He was particularly renowned for producing many of the topographical subjects in Tunbridge Ware, including views close to home and further afield. Local views include The Pantiles, Penshurst Place. Hever& Tonbridge Castle. Hollamby rarely labelled his work. History of Tunbridge Ware) Following an apprenticeship to the Burrows family. Henry Hollamby set up on his own in 1842 to become the largest manufacturer of Tunbridge Ware, employing around 40 people. Noted for his large views of famous buildings, the business was destroyed by fire in 1891 and never revived. Robert Russell also exhibited at the Great Exhibition and worked in Tunbridge producing sophisticated designs for over 20 years.
