Up for your consideration is this nice antique French three drawer locking jewelry chest. This wonderful chest has great attention to detail when the inlay was done. The gold gilded ormolu accents include the key hole surrounds and also the door pulls that each hold a different hand painted Sevres style porcelain disc for each pull. This chest is in excellent condition. You can tell the age by the toning of the underside wood. Like you see on the antique shows where you scratch your fingernail on the oxidized wood. It leaves a distinct mark that shows age that cannot be replicated. The only thing I see wrong is that the original key is not present. Just a trip to your local antique co-op should remedy this. This was really a great find.a turn of the century Late Ottoman Turkish or Middle Eastern inlaid with mother of pearl walnut chest or dowry or blanket box. The pattern involves stars and other geometric shapes and some carvings that resemble birds and it is in very good condition. Patina is beautiful and finish is original. The base is an interesting combination of incised lines and inlaid mother of pearl stars on a reticulated base. It is all hand dovetailed. Height = 19 5/8" Length = 33 5/8" Depth = 16 5/8" Add a piece of glass to the top and have the perfect coffee or even side table. This beautiful chest was found in S E Ohio in a Morgan Co. farm house. The combination of woods and inlay work make this chest very appealing. The top is a one piece poplar board with a red wash on it. The sides are cherry with walnut panels. The drawers are solid tiger maple. And the inlaid keyholes are walnut. The knobs are original and screw into the front of the drawers. If you don't like porcelain, they can easily be replaced. The secondary wood is poplar and the post and legs are cherry. The chest is in original as found condition. It measures 47 1/4' tall case width 41' top is 21' deep, it has a small overhang on the back for chair rail. A fine addition to any collection. This tool cabinet is exceptionally fine with marquetry inlay on the interior. Late 19th century the chest has copper edge binding protection on the outside and also heavy handles on either side. All of the several drawers on the interior slide front to back in addition to the storage on the base. Note the pulls on each drawer. 19th C. Teak Blanket / Treasure Chest / Trunk South Seas Mother-of-Pearl Inlaid
Exceptional and Rare Antique Ind o-Balinese Chest with Mother of Pearl Inlays on three sides and on the lid. Excellent wood conditions; of the internal candle box only the lid is still there. Hinged; some inlay bits and one of the handles missing; main part of its original lock still in place. But its key ha s been lost to the ages. Width: 24.5" 62 cm) Depth: 12.5" 32 cm) Height: 16" 37 cm) including feet(3.5" 9 cm) Volume: 73 Litres(0.073 m3) Weight: 17 lb 8 Oz(8 KG) A distictive accent piece of furniture with elegant mother of pearl inlaid patterns and great historic patina. It can be used for storage or as a coffee table and similar; made of teak wood, which becomes stronger with age. It does not need much in terms of care: a water-moistened cloth is better than using any wood cleaning products. The sides are joined ... moreusing the dovetail technique. Its decoration patterns originally came into Indonesia. Especially Hindu Bali, from Gujarat, India, in the 16 th century. Later on. The m.o.p. from the eastern Indonesian seas was used for its excellent polychromatic qualities when exposed to light, especially amber sunlight. The 3 photos of similar chests inside a display cabinet were taken at a royal palace( Kraton) museum in Cirebon. Java(Peti dari Mesir' means chests from Egypt) The m.o.p. ornamental patterns were used by Gujarati craftsmen for products mostly exported to many regions from the Middle East to Southeast Asia. These patterns bear some similarity to those found in the Ottoman Empire, which was also an export destination for this kind of chests.
