Vintage Rare Wooden Flattop Travel Trunk
Item 14-20344 is a very nice vintage rare wooden flattop travel trunk. It measures 32" length x 16" width x 24" height. It has all the original hardware that is very heavy. It has two latches on the sides. It has the new leather handles. This trunk does not have a key. It has three compartments in the lid that has a Velcro enclosure. t has three trays. One has a lid also with Velcro enclosure. When the lid is open it looks more like a dresser with drawers than a trunk. It has been lined inside with quilt batting a fabric that looks like the old wall paper. My husband and I have restored trunks for the last 18 years and have never seen one like this. Here is an early dome top personal valise or travel trunk. The trunk is trimmed in leather with nail head accents and the interior retains a paper lining which states the maker as NATH’l B. March Portsmouth. The paper bears the date of 1810. While we were told the trunk shows earlier construction. There are leather interior straps with buckles for securing the packed items, and there is an iron lock with no key present. The domed lid has become separated from the rounded base. Antique Round Wooden Stagecoach Trunk Brass Gold Rush Era Travel Chest Vintage
For consideration is an antique wood trunk in good condition. The trunk is embellished with square shank brass studs and is lined with a Boston paper(Gleason's Pictorial Drawing Room Companion) that is dated 1851. The former owner(an elderly woman in Southern NH) said that it was in her family as long as she could remember. Though she couldn't give additional concrete details. Her grandfather had gone to California during the gold rush, but she couldn't be sure this trunk belonged to him. On top of the trunk are the initials"B.B. Their last name starts with a"B" but her grandfather's first name didn't start with"B. She kept it in back of her rocking chair. Which is why there are scratches on the right side of the trunk. There are some holes that appear to have had brass tacks in them at some point, ... morebut they don't line up with the tacks that are currently there. It looks like someone may have taken the original tacks off and put these on. I'm wondering if there was an early refinishing of the trunk which may have required the tacks to be removed and then replaced. You'll notice that there are missing tacks on the front near the latch and one missing on top of the trunk. There are very old pads on the bottom of the trunk. Most of the hardware appears original. One of the hinges on the back is still attached entirely with old rose head nails. There are several newer(but still old) screws that have been used in repairing or reinforcing the trunk and its hardware. The wrought iron handles are period. The trunk has a nice honey color. The interior is heavily soiled and I didn't attempt to clean it as I wanted to preserve the paper lining. It's approximately 24" wide by 12" in diameter.
