The chest of drawers has reeded accents running down both sides at the front that continues onto all four feet, which are straight and tapering. Offered for sale is a Beautiful Solid Oak 7- Drawer Chest-on-Chest. Made in the USA by Sumter Cabinet Company. This chest was manufactured in November. 1992 and comes from a non-smoking home. The chest belongs to my son and was purchased when he was a small boy. It is in fantastic, excellent shape overall with the exception of two areas on the top where he placed a red wax figure that left a stain in the finish. I am too short to see the top since the chest is so tall, otherwise I would have caught it sooner. See pics#8, 9. The drawers are all very clean and the there is a stamp on the inside top drawer that reads, Sumter Cabinet Company, Sumter, SC/Korn Industries, Inc. Furniture Division(see pic#10) There is also an item number and date stamped on the back. Gorgeous carved solid walnut Gentleman's 6 drawer dresser chest original finish
This is a beautiful example of a Gentleman's dresser or chest. Early Victorian era and style. The sides and front of the dresser are solid walnut, as are the dove-tailed drawer fronts. With the added beauty of burled walnut oval panels. The black and brass teardrop drawer pulls are old and not reproduction, but not original to the piece. There probably was either a tw o- post earlier brass handle or a carved pull. T he finish is original. It has two vanity boxes on top. And the dresser is finished off with a small wood pediment bet ween the vanity boxes. I estimate this chest to be from the 1880's. Which makes it one hundred and thirty years old. It has had very good care throughout its' life. And is in excellent condition, with just wear due to age and usage. The burl veneer is all intact. None missing-which is incredible for ... moreits' age! There is one slightly lighter ring on the top and a few scratches on the bottom panel. But nothing noticeable. There are four drawers-the two in the center are slightly less deep and the top and bottom ones are a little deeper. Due to the design of the chest. There are carved and turned supports up the front corners of each side. Ending in a spoon-carved small corbel on either side. This piece has more character than most of the Victorian dressers I've seen and was probably a high-end piece in its' day. There is a key that came with the dresser, that fits the locks-but, they won't turn, for the most part. So, it could be made to lock, but, at the moment, it won't. The brass locks are all there. The measurements are: 41 inches wide by 47 inches high by 17 inches deep. I am happy to take and send more photos. If you are interested. The dresser can be picked-up. 19th c. Solid Red Oak Hand-Carved 3-Drawer Chest Magnificently Constructed
Just look at the details of the hand carvings and you can see the inconsistencies that denotes the mark of the carver's hand- the lovely'acorn on leaf' drawer pulls are all hand-carved. But no two are alike-they're like the snoflakes of drawer pulls. They all look alike. But they are all distinctively different. To me. This makes the piece quite sweet and charming. You'll see many of these types of carved pulls from time to time. But rarely will you see the drawers trimmed in the elongated oval like on these drawer fronts-VERY nice accent. There are wooden escutcheons on the three drawer. The top being triangular and the other two being round in shape. There is some very perfect cracking on the edge of the top. Just enough to be artistically welcome. But not enough to compromise the structure of the piece. The center drawer ... moreis on hinges. And opens up like a breadbox. The hand-carved skirt is impressive. The drawers had locks. Mostly missing However. ANTIQUE JAPANESE TAISHO ERA 6 DRAWER TANSU DOCUMENT CHEST SOLID PAULOWNIA WOOD
Known as a chobadansu. This chest was made and used about 90 years ago in the late Taisho period(c. 1920) The chobadansu, or document chest with locking drawers and doors, was used to store an individual's or shop's accounts, documents, and valuables(note: key included) This tansu chest is made of solid kiri(paulownia) wood and hardened hinoki wood peg construction(see picture 9) All the hardware is made of hand forged copper with an embossed(on the locks) and relief(on the handles) momiji(Japanese maple leaf) design. This box is reinforced with forged copper strapping on the front. All drawers as well as doors move easily without binding. The chest has six drawers. And two sliding doors. The key seen in picture 8 operates the top right drawer lock. This chest has a 90+ year old warm aged patina and remains in very fine condition ... moreand should serve one well for another century of use. This is a very nice vintage carpenter's tool chest. It measures 33" x 14 1/4" x 8 1/2" It is made of solid wood and has all original hardware. The inside of the chest has a beautiful red tone stain. There is a drawer with multiple compartments that pulls out. There are also 3 compartments in the fold down portion with separators that have leather straps which can secure tools. The inside is stamped"ASSEMBLED BY No. 18" The outside was painted green at some point. Some places where the paint has chipped has revealed the same red stained wood finish beneath the paint. ANTIQUE JAPANESE 172 YEAR OLD 8 DRAWER KO-DANSU CHEST SOLID PAULOWNIA WOOD TANSU
Known as a kirikodansu. This tansu chest was made and used over 150 years ago years ago in the late Edo Era(c. 1842) The kirikodansu was a special personal chest with all locking drawers and was used to store ones kimono accessories as well as money. Documents and valuables(note: keys included) On the bottom of this ancient yet sturdy tansu chest is the name of the previous owner( Takazawa family) with the Edo date: early summer of the 13th year of Tempo(1842) Making this chest 172 years old. This tansu chest is made of solid kiri(paulownia) wood and hardened hinoki wood peg construction(see last picture) All the hardware is made of hand forged iron with handles in the classic warabite(fern hand) shape. There is protective coat of burnt lacquer finish on all the forged iron work. The entire exterior as well as the sides of the interior drawers ... morehave a kijiro(natural Japanese lacquer) finish over persimmon tannin stain. There is about a 5% loss of the original finish due to wear over various areas of lacquer as seen in the enlarged pictures. It is. However, all original with a deep rich patina. All drawers as well as doors move easily without binding. The chest has eight drawers including the two behind the lower right hand safe area(see picture 5) The 3 keys seen in picture 11 operate the various drawer locks(see pictures 10& 11) All locks are operational on this wonderfully complete 150 year old tansu chest. The strike plate on all the locks have an unusual design element of an egg plant(see enlarged picture 10) This chest has a 170+ year old original warm aged patina and remains in very fine condition and should serve one well for another century of use. It measures 24" wide by 19 3/4" high by 13" deep(60 x 50 x 33 cm) A great piece of Japanese history and a very interesting and functional piece of furniture. You'll love it. This tansu chest was made and used over 85 years ago in the late Taisho period(c. 1925) The chobadansu, or document chest with locking drawers, was used to store an individual's or shop's accounts, documents, and valuables(note: key included) This tansu chest is made of solid kiri(paulownia) wood and hardened hinoki wood peg construction(see picture 10) All the hardware is made of hand forged copper with handles in the classic warabite(fern hand) shape. All drawers as well as doors move easily without binding. The chest has three drawers. And two sliding doors. The key seen in pictures 8 operates the large lower drawer lock. The two sliding doors are easily removable to reveal an open area with a fixed shelf.
