Because of the lovely decorations and the writing of the name BERTA ELLINGS 1894 DATTER AAROEN I assume that it's a bride's box or maybe a dower box. A dower box is similar to a hope chest and were often made for girls when they were 8 or 10 years old to encourage them to fill it with their handwork in anticipation of the time they would marry and set up housekeeping. Datter is daughter in German. So I'm guessing that Aaroen could be her maiden name(in the case of a bride's chest) or possibly her mother's maiden name(in the case of a dower chest) The box portion measures about 37 1/2" by 16 1/2" and about 20 1/2 in. from floor to peak of lid. Antique Victorian dome top painted Wedding Chest. Ca 1870's trunk, pat. date on the two latches July'73, no key. Actual time of painting is unknown, also inside was covered with a heavy wallpaper like material. Has original casters along with an additional all swivel set, trunk was taken care of and repaired when needed, ie screw added where an original rivet popped out, ect. The French wording on three sides are; l' amour, l' amitie, la bon heure. The Love, The Friendship, The Right Time. Please read the fine print. Ask questions before bidding.
